A woman was so calm on her mobile phone ....... saying that she was lying on broken tiles and had been told not to move around until help arrived! God knows whether she was at the top or bottom of a building. It looks very dangerous for the rescue workers too. Hats off to those brave people who risk their own lives to rescue others. I know the McCanns won't agree with me ...... but I do wish that more dogs were available at times like this. To scent both the living and the dead.
they got that women out alive and mostly unharmed much to her sons joy!!!!!!

Thanks Marky. What I find interesting is that although the epicentre was a few miles away, the quake cut a swathe through the centre of the city.
Re: the nz quake mods please move
The epicenter gets a good shake but it's like shaking a table cloth or blanket - where you grip it is the epicenter and then the force rolls along the earth (blanket say) and at the end of it, like cracking the whip, it receives another sharp shock. The worst damage is often not where the epicenter is but 10 or 15 miles away and sometimes further.
Also if there is not much but terrain between the epicenter and the city you wouldn't see a lot of destruction because it's not dramatic like buidings falling down as in this photo - it's more cracks in the earth or the odd tree falling over.
In the Loma Prieta quake (Calif 1989) the epi center was in Loma Prieta, there was a big shift of earth there and a gap in the ground about five feet wide, but Santa Cruz and San Jose (15 miles off) had buildings collapse as well of course as the San Francisco embarcadero freeway, the section of 880 in Oakland and the section of the Bay bridge that collapsed. That's 60 miles from the epicenter and really took the worst of the shock as it radiated away from where the actual epicenter was.

Yes, but there doesn't seem to be any dust rising outside of that long swathe right through the city centre. That's what I found interesting, that it's the busiest parts of the city and not a great swathe through one side or the other.
Re: the nz quake mods please move
Thanks, blossom. Yes, I'm very relieved to know they're safe, just as I know you are about your niece and family. It's a worrying time for so many people and sadly it looks as though the death toll will be even higher as time goes on.blossom45 wrote: dimsie,

I think I'd be terrified to live in Christchurch, with two earthquakes within six months - I'd be convinced another one was on its way. Is there no way of predicting earthquakes?

Re: the nz quake mods please move
Sounds awful, and there are some horrific pictures of this event.
Just after we arrived in SA in 1969 my sister and I actually slept through a 6.3 quake. We were at that time living on a wine farm outside a town called Wellington, oddly enough. It was later reported that the shock was felt as far away as Durban, which is well over 1000km away. Luckily, the area was sparsely populated at the time, and I think only around 10 people died. My thoughts are with all those affected by this tragedy.

Re: the nz quake mods please move
there are wee earth tremors in turkey all the time, people just get used to them
after there was a huge earthquake there 20 years ago and a lot of people died
they tightened the building regs up considerably and a lot of buildings had to be strengthened at a huge cost to the owners
the penalties for flouting the building regs in turkey are very severe due to the earthquake threat
the first tremor i ever felt was scary but after that you knew what to expect and after a while it doesn't bother you
but the animals know when one is coming, our neighbour has a field of goats and the goats all go mental just before a tremor is due
on the nz quake, an ex workmate of mine now lives in christchurch but thankfully she and her family are ok
i was very relieved to get an email from her as she is also a teacher and it said on the news that a school was destroyed but it was not hers
still a scary moment though
god bless all who lost family and friends xx

Just before the quake hit here, there were reports of thousands of rats exiting the sewers and running around the streets of Cape Town, which is about 70km distant from the epicentre of same quake. After the last of the aftershocks they returned 'home'.The Famous Grouse wrote:
