4 year old suvives fire while home alone!!!

A four-year-old boy rescued from a western Sydney house fire had been left home alone watching cartoons for about 15 minutes while his mother took his brothers to school.

The young boy was in hospital after being rescued by a neighbour who discovered him in a rear sunroom overcome by fumes.

"If it wasn't for the quick and brave actions of the neighbour, we'd be looking at a different scenario, and by scenario I mean serious injuries," Inspector Ken Hardie told AAP.

The boy's mother was taking his two older brothers to a school in South Granville, about one kilometre away from their Byrnes Street home, when the blaze started shortly after 9am (AEST) on Monday.

The neighbour from across the road saved the boy from the burning house.

Insp Hardie said the near-tragedy served as a reminder to parents.

"You can't leave them at home alone for any amount of time - you don't know what can occur when they're by themselves," he said.

Fire gutted the loungeroom in the front of the weatherboard house, where police said the boy had been left alone for about 15 minutes, watching cartoons.

Police and firefighters found him unconscious at the back of the house, along with his rescuer and his mother, who had just arrived home.

Insp Hardie said the boy, who was being treated at Auburn Hospital for smoke inhalation, could have been badly injured if it wasn't for his heroic neighbour.

Police are investigating the fire while the NSW Department of Community Services will conduct an inquiry into the mother's conduct.

Insp Hardie said he had his own theories about the cause of the blaze, which he estimated had lasted for 10 minutes before being extinguished.
"You know what four-year-olds are like when they find matches," he said.

see my bolded parts!!!!!! the mcanns were so stupid to think maddie could get out of a fire!!! this 4 year old was left alone for 15 minutes and there was a fire it shows ANYTHING could have happned to maddie OR the twins!!!! thankfully our police and community services are looking into why the mum did this!!!

yes and child protection are looking into why his mum did this!!!

If doctors can stand on tv and tell people they are assured by experts that leaving their children alone for half an hour is within the bounds of responsible parenting and they did nothing wrong, why should this woman be punished? McCanns are allowed to ADVERTISE this practice as responsible.

Anyways it's the fire's fault, not the mom's. That is what we should be focusing on. Nelect doesn't kill children - abductors, fire, and swimming pools do.

exactly 4 yer olds are more then capable of getting out in case of a fire etc i mean the mcanns thought maddie was mature enough to babysit at aged almost 4 and get the twins out etc in case of a fire !!!! so a 4 year old can stay and watch a cartoon alone for 15 minutes its just too bad the naughty matches caused a fire!!!

Those matches should receive jail time and the little boy be sternly told to consider his behavior - after all that was a situation he found himself in.

maybe the little boy read on the matches box keep in reach of children instead of keep out of reach of children???

This is really a close run thing - as they said it could have been worse with serious injuries.

But I expect it's different if your dining in your back garden!
