GP Guilty Of Indecently Assaulting Girls
A former GP and trusted family doctor is facing a lengthy prison sentence for indecently assaulting young girls who had been innocently brought to his surgery by their parents.
The Belmont Surgery in Wadhurst was where Antony Collis worked for 25 years
At the Old Bailey Antony Collis, 59, of Stonegate, near Wadhurst, East Sussex, was found guilty of eight counts of indecent assault involving five girls aged under 14.
Those girls were assaulted over a 10-year period - from 1993 until 2003 - while Collis was performing examinations, which were often conducted in close proximity to parents.
In addition pornographic images of children had been viewed on Collis's two computers, which had been seized by police after his arrest.
The former GP bowed his head as the jury returned the verdicts. Collis was cleared of four counts of indecent assault, and two further counts on the directions of Judge Peter Rook.
[Collis] conducted a number of indecently motivated examinations of female patients. The first time [one patient] winced but her mother told her to let the doctor do what the doctor wanted to do.
Lyn Griffin, for the prosecution at the Old Bailey
Collis, who for years had been a trusted village doctor in East Sussex, then pleaded guilty to two offences of making and storing indecent pictures of children.
The judge remanded Collis in custody for sentencing on Friday and warned him he was facing a "substantial" prison sentence.
Judge Rook told him: "I appreciate you must be devastated by the jury's verdicts. You know perfectly well that following the verdicts you will be receiving a custodial sentence.
"These are very serious matters indeed. They amount to a gross abuse of trust."
The ex-GP, who has already been struck off the medical register, had assaulted youngsters "under the cover of appropriate, proper medical examinations".
Lyn Griffin, prosecuting, said Collis worked at the Belmont Surgery, serving Wadhurst, Ticehurst and Frant, for 25 years and "conducted a number of indecently motivated examinations of female patients."
One girl, aged between eight and 11 at the time, remembered occasions on which she was intimately examined and was forced to sit on the doctor's knee with his arm around her waist.
"The first time she winced but her mother told her to let the doctor do what the doctor wanted to do." Her medical records showed she had been examined vaginally 16 times.
Further, Raymond Packham, a Sussex police computer expert, said he found encrypted files on a laptop and a hard drive which had contained thousands of images.
Collis was struck off in 2007, after the General Medical Council found 43 instances of misconduct in relation to girls involving "indecent, unnecessary and inappropriate" examinations.
Judge Rook told him: "I appreciate you must be devastated by the jury's verdicts. You know perfectly well that following the verdicts you will be receiving a custodial sentence.....WTF.......and the victims are what JUDGE ROOK?
