Dead soldiers' families 'hacked by newspaper'

Phones owned by relatives of dead UK soldiers were allegedly hacked by the News of the World, a national newspaper reports.

The Daily Telegraph claims the phone numbers of relatives of dead were found in the files of private investigator Glenn Mulcaire.

This comes after Prime Minister David Cameron said he would set up a public inquiry into alleged phone hacking.

Rupert Murdoch, the paper's owner, has called claims of hacking "deplorable".

Speaking after earlier claims of phone hacking, he said: "Recent allegations of phone hacking and making payments to police with respect to the News of the World are deplorable and unacceptable."

In a statement, Mr Murdoch, chairman of News Corporation, News International's parent company, said: "I have made clear that our company must fully and proactively co-operate with the police in all investigations and that is exactly what News International has been doing and will continue to do under Rebekah Brooks's leadership.

'Shocked and appalled'
"We are committed to addressing these issues fully and have taken a number of important steps to prevent them from happening again."

After details of the Telegraph story emerged, a senior source at News International told BBC political editor Nick Robinson: "The military is a cause central to the heart of News International. If this story is correct we are absolutely shocked and appalled that that tradition has been besmirched".

"The News of the World and the Sun have prided themselves on their support for Help the Heroes, campaigns for the military covenant and other military causes."

Meanwhile, Scotland Yard has told George Osborne that his name and home phone number appeared on notes kept by Mulcaire and former News of the World reporter Clive Goodman, a spokesman for the chancellor said.

He said there was no suggestion that his phone had been hacked.

The prime minister has expressed disgust at claims that the voicemail of murdered girl Milly Dowler was hacked, and some messages deleted.

I can't think whats the point of 'hacking' dead soldiers family phones.No point and dont believe it,only point in 'jurno's 'hacking phones is to get juicey gossip before the opposition gets it.
Jurno's will do deplorable things and murdoch and his ilk will do similiar.

I remember the Milli Dowler case when it first occurred and the hopes of the parents when they heard the phone had been 'used'.Disgracefull and some one should go to prison who authorised that.

The sharks comment is a jibe of Murdochs this is what he said when he destroyed a man called Leo Kern the man that owned German pay per view which is now owned by Murdoch perhaps hopefully Murdochs words will come back to bite him.

this is one of the only two aspects of this story that we should be truly concerned with, the other being police corruption. this could pave the way to shackling the press. state controlled if you like. as for the use of the word 'hacking'. it's a bit like saying someone broke into your house when in fact you left the door open.

You're not wrong there mo........ The arrogant smooth talkers always appear to be poo proof, but now and then one of them catches a cold or gets slung to the wolves as will perhaps happen in this case..

But even when caught with the smoking gun in their hand they invariably receive laughable sentences which are served in open prisons with regular trips to town and conjugal visits by their rent boy buddies.

I would imagine that other papers will get drawn into this to some extent as these journalists tend to mix together in their fleet street bars so they will all know this business.But they only do what they are told or encouraged to do one way or the other.
So it is them at the top who are to blame for that behaviour.Think we all know that the Media Chiefs would like to control the World and they no doubt think they are untouchable.

Would like to see Murdoch jump ship,literally,just like maxwell did,though his crime nicking the pensions of workers was far worse offcourse.

That ginger haired woman must know a fair deal of secrets beyond what we are talking about here,and she is threatening to spill the beans apparently.

eta.......... When i say 'far worse' its a different sort of 'worse' as what they did to Milli Dowler's phone is just about the bottom of the pit.

The family of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler have called for Rebekah Brooks to quit over the hacking scandal after confirming they have not received an apology from the Murdochs.

Bob and Sally Dowler are suing the News of the World (NOTW) following claims their daughter's mobile phone was targeted when she went missing in 2002.

The Dowlers said the fact that messages were being deleted from the 13-year-old's phone gave them false hope that she was still alive.

Mrs Dowler and Milly's sister Gemma were among 13 victims and campaigners who met the Deputy Prime Minister earlier to ensure a comprehensive inquiry is carried out.

They called for "stronger, clearer and faster action" from the Government over the scandal.

In a statement following the meeting, the Dowler's lawyer Mark Lewis said the family believe Brooks "should take responsibility and do the honourable thing and resign".

"They don't see why she should stay in the job," he added. "They see this as something that went right to the top."

They confirmed they had not received an apology from the Murdochs.

One could read this to mean that the NOTW was taken by RB out of business - by her and Rupert - so that there is nothing for the families to SUE.

Dow did this when they bought Union Carbide - UC was dissolved and when families of the victims of the Bhopal incident tried to sue. Dow didn't have to pay because it wasn't them who did it and UC wasn't there to be sued anymore so the families got sh*t and shoved in it.

I am wondering since the printers and all the infrastructure isn't owned by NewsCorp - if they can just shut down NOTW and transfer their assets to the other papers they own and somehow doing this manage to avoid millinos of pounds in lawsuits for their DISGRACEFUL behavior.

That Rebekah Brooks looks like she should be pushing a mop in a bar. and not a particularly nice bar either. How DARE taht wench not apologize to the family for doing this. Wants to keep her hands clean?

Who wants to bet they will go out of business to avoid accountability and that she will be simply given some other paper to run in this fashion and will NOT have the grace or class to resign as she certainly should do.
