Massive or significant? From memory the NotW reward was £250K then others (like JKR) pledged monies which took it up to £1.5 million. Of course that was all done in the early days after the disappearance.

Maybe he just knew he was about to kick the bucket so thats why he spilt the beans.On the other hand i'd have a good look around his house for any pointy umbrellas.
If its the former then we may have to wait a while for any death bed confessions from the mccanns or their friends.
