Re: more store closures and job cuts ahead in uk?
I think there will be more closures of small shops in my town in the near future. Sainsbury's has applied for planning permission for a couple of local stores in places where there are small, independent shops. In one area, there is a row of independent shops which have been there for a long time, and which serve the local community, but a small service station is closing and Sainsbury's has applied for planning permission for the site. I doubt those small shops will fare well if Sainsbury's gets the site.

It is sad when a recognised name like Clinton closes, a number of factory card shops opened now selling cards very cheap but Clinton was a nice shop, nice little teddies they had in the shops as well.

They have already gone from here, so has Hawkins Bazaar and the local Body Shop has just closed. So has the Art at Home picture framing shop. In fact the only things that DO seem to be thriving are the supermarkets. There's a new Tesco going up on the site of what used to be a primary school playground.

Ethel Austin, Badboy - they had a huge shop in Ayr. But it's gone now. They also had a shop in Prestwick that they shared with Internactionale. That's gone too.

A bit of good news, unemployment fell by 7,000 last month. Also, EADS and BAE (Aircraft ) are in advanced talks to explore a combination. This would not affect BAE's business in America and could be very proffitable when Economies around the World improve.

I remember a time when JJB Sports was a very popular shop, when Nike and Adidas and Reebok were trendy. There is a large JJB store in our local shopping mall, but it never looks busy and I think it's a lot to do with the fact that they are still trading as if all those brands are still trendy. I went in some time ago, to a nearly empty shop, and asked if they stocked New Balance. They had two pairs of men's NB and that was it; the rest the usual stuff they've had on their shelves for decades.

2,000 Jobs to Go As JJB Stores Close
Sports Direct buys only 20 JJB stores, resulting in over 100 shop closures and thousands of redundancies across the UK.

More than 130 JJB Sports stores have closed down resulting in 2,200 redundancies, the company's administrators have said.
KPMG confirmed Sports Direct bought just 20 of the troubled retailer's stores, its brand and website for £23.77m.
Up to a further £250,000 will be paid after the completion of stock-taking, it added.
The deal saves around 550 jobs in the UK, including at the company's warehouse.
KPMG's Richard Fleming said attempts to restructure the business had failed.
"Unfortunately a buyer could only be found for 20 stores on a going concern basis," he said.
"All staff made redundant as a result of store closures has had their arrears of wages and holiday entitlements paid in full.
"Our team of employment specialists will be supporting staff on completing redundancy forms and putting them in touch with job seeker services.
"We will now be reviewing what options are available for the remainder of the business."
JJB Sports put itself up for sale last month, but shareholders were warned they were likely to be left empty-handed.
Shares in the company, which has been making a loss 2009, were suspended last week.
Wigan Athletic owner Dave Whelan bought the first JJB store in Wigan in 1971 and rapidly expanded the company to become the UK's biggest sports retailer with more than 400 stores.
It was floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1994.
: JJB Sports employees can call a 24-hour helpline on 0845 3022538.
