What We’re Reading: Madeleine: Our daughter’s disappearance
Madeleine: Our daughter’s disappearance and the continuing search for her by Kate McCann
When the McCann family of five left England with friends for a holiday in the Algarves, little did they dream that only four of them would return home. Just shy of her fourth birthday, daughter Madeleine would be snatched from her bed by a stranger. This book is their family’s story.
Some reviews of this book describe McCann’s version as one-sided, leaving the reader with many unanswered questions. I think this is unfair. The police and the media have had their say and Madeleine’s parents have been crucified many times over already – in the news, on blogs, and in people’s heads. While they did make a poor decision in leaving Madeleine and her younger siblings alone in their holiday apartment, McCann points out that it’s a decision that they have dearly paid for and that will wrack them with guilt for the rest of their lives. Kate’s anguish is palpable.
While the subject matter is difficult, the story is important. For one thing, it accomplishes its objective, which is to keep in the public memory Madeleine’s name, face, and abduction, with the hope that someone, somewhere, sometime, will see her, recognize her, and aid in returning her to her family.
No matter what you’ve read or heard about the case in the past, here you get the whole story in great detail with no private matter hidden. What you read will astonish you, make you angry, grieve you, and cause you to pray - not only for Madeleine and her family, but for all stolen and missing children and their families. You will hold your own children a little closer and think about how you can let them experience life while best providing for their safety. You may well reconsider in which countries your family will holiday!
Please read this. Then take whatever action you can on behalf of Madeleine, her parents and missing children in general. No one deserves what the McCann family continues to experience; every child who is put to bed should remain safely there – no matter what.

The book should come with a free copy of the PJ files Then see how many people still believe "No matter what you’ve read or heard about the case in the past, here you get the whole story in great detail with no private matter hidden".

well I do agree with this, but what about Kate's remark to Fiona...'is it better that she comes to find us'?....how is that safe in bed.

Pardon? I think it is Madeleine who has paid dearly for "their" mistake!

Yes - what you get is Kate's "story".

Just how does the country make any difference. The fact remains that the abduction only happened because the parents weren't keeping a proper watch over their children. children for which they had responsibility. But an abduction didn't take place as we know. So don't blame an innocent country for parental negligence.

Well said Keela. Portugal is hardly like leaving the children alone in a third world country. Amazingly it could actually have happened in the UK!
