Well done HiDeHo. Can't watch it all at the moment as I'm at work and got emotional. Will have a look later at home.

Bravo HideHo. I always find the 2 minutes silence very moving and after that and then watching your excellent video, I'm an emotional wreck.

HiDeHo very powerful very emotional, made me think of my Mum and Dad and Nan and what they went through in the war years. Its essential to remember what was fought for and by whom. Yes a prayer for all of those who fought, were injured, those that died and those that lived through it all. jimo

Thanks for that. I put more time into it than planned but knew it had to be finished in time or the effort was wasted.
I sent it to my kids (mid twenties) to watch as I was trying to achieve a 'feel' for how dreadful war is and what it must have been like. The 'Saving Private Ryan' clip has always brought it home to me what it must have been like.
I dedicated it to a friend's uncle who was a medic. One of the first on the beach at Courseulles-Sur-Mer, and when I realised he would have experienced something similar to the scene in Saving Private Ryan' clip it really brought it home to me.
He took the pictures from the beach, as shown in the dedication and at the beginning, but unfortunately I didn't have time to scan them properly.
The end portion about London, really made me realise how easy it is to 'know' our parents were 'in the war' but to see the buildings collapsing and families in the undergound really reminds me how it was for my mum. She used to tell me the story of leaving the 'White House' department store in London with my sister, seconds before it was demolished.
From 15.30 onwards really brought home to me how the Home Guard played their part in the war also and the pride to have fought so hard that not one of Hitlers soldiers ever set foot on British soil. Amazing.
I was also inspired by the Unknown Soldiers funeral. I had never seen that before.
I saw so much footage while researching the clips to use.
Youtube certainly has a lot to offer. Compiling that video taught me a lot!
Thank you for using it in school.

It is so lovely to see comments like that!
I am privileged to know that this video will be seen by students at school.
It is special to know that it created an emotional experience for some.
I put extra time into it, knowing that it needed to be finished by Nov 11th, and I finished it after more than 24 hrs working on it, not because I needed any kind of acclamation on it, only because I WANTED to finish in time for Nov 11th.
I finished it at 12.02 am on November 11th, but it took me a couple hours to download to computer and half hour to upload to Youtube (by 5 am) and an hour to add to forums etc. I slept for a good portion of Nov 11th and missed the 2 mins silence as I was sound asleep.
Nothing compared to the lives lost to give us the freedom we can now enjoy.
Some things are more important than others...this video was VERY important to me and I thank you for the additional response to know that others care at least as much as I do, about what was given to us so that we have the life we have.
It was my Thank You .....the least I could do.....
I am new to Youtubing, Creating videos is not my profession. I paint garage doors and front doors to look like wood.... hardly an asset to creating videos, but it has become a passion...even if only ONE person enjoys it...I am happy!
Re: My Remembrance Day Video - Powerful WW1 & WW2 Footage
HideHo,
I think your video has touched a lot of hearts and made us realise how many lives were lost during those terrible years and the stoicsm of the
people.
I watched a Rememberance Service tonight on T.V. and compared to today, the character of people has changed so much. The 1st and 2nd World wars were fought to protect Britain, today, our troops fight in other Countries for a perceived threat, not an actual one.

Re: My Remembrance Day Video - Powerful WW1 & WW2 Footage
For anyone who has children who are at the moment studying WWII, there is a good resource site that is used by lots of schools. It has images of things like ration cards and also recipes from the time. There are witness accounts from people who were children during WWII in Germany as well as in the UK.

Re: My Remembrance Day Video - Powerful WW1 & WW2 Footage
oh HideHo............well done
GOD BLESS TO ALL WHO HAVE LOST THEIR LIVES AND ALSO THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN INJURED ...........
saw this a couple of years ago ...and think it appropriate
"Please wear a poppy," the lady said
And held one forth, but I shook my head.
Then I stopped and watched as she offered them there,
And her face was old and lined with care;
But beneath the scars the years had made
There remained a smile that refused to fade.
A boy came whistling down the street,
Bouncing along on care-free feet.
His smile was full of joy and fun,
"Lady," said he, "may I have one?"
When she's pinned in on he turned to say,
"Why do we wear a poppy today?"
The lady smiled in her wistful way
And answered, "This is Remembrance Day,
And the poppy there is the symbol for
The gallant men who died in war.
And because they did, you and I are free -
That's why we wear a poppy, you see.
"I had a boy about your size,
With golden hair and big blue eyes.
He loved to play and jump and shout,
Free as a bird he would race about.
As the years went by he learned and grew
and became a man - as you will, too.
"He was fine and strong, with a boyish smile,
But he'd seemed with us such a little while
When war broke out and he went away.
I still remember his face that day
When he smiled at me and said, Goodbye,
I'll be back soon, Mom, so please don't cry.
"But the war went on and he had to stay,
And all I could do was wait and pray.
His letters told of the awful fight,
(I can see it still in my dreams at night),
With the tanks and guns and cruel barbed wire,
And the mines and bullets, the bombs and fire.
"Till at last, at last, the war was won -
And that's why we wear a poppy son."
The small boy turned as if to go,
Then said, "Thanks, lady, I'm glad to know.
That sure did sound like an awful fight,
But your son - did he come back all right?"
A tear rolled down each faded check;
She shook her head, but didn't speak.
I slunk away in a sort of shame,
And if you were me you'd have done the same;
For our thanks, in giving, if oft delayed,
Thought our freedom was bought - and thousands paid!
And so when we see a poppy worn,
Let us reflect on the burden borne,
By those who gave their very all
When asked to answer their country's call
That we at home in peace might live.
Then wear a poppy! Remember - and give!

Re: My Remembrance Day Video - Powerful WW1 & WW2 Footage
Thanks xtina and Anna.
I just want to share a little story if I may...
Years ago, mum would take my two little ones ( or HER children as she would often say!) on a Friday night and I'd pop to the local pub for a couple of hours.
I spent time chatting with one of the regulars in there...he was known as 'Johnny the Clown' as he played the drum in a local clown band.
He was a very lonely man, often telling me that if he died, his son would not even care. He grew an attachment to my two when the would sit and chat with him (he saw them growing up and they would always give him a special wave when he played in the Christmas Parade each year).
Out of character, he gave them a little clown doll.
One Remembrance Day he came into the pub proudly wearing his medals.
I sat down with him and asked about his experiences in the war in the Spitfire Regiment and when he told me about wanting to get in touch with his friend, who had lost a leg but he had managed to save, I made notes and decided to try to contact his friend.
Armed only with some basic information (and before computers) I phoned everyone with his friend's surname in Scotland. I wasn't prepared when one call acknowledged he was the same name and the only thing I could think of to ask was whether he had one leg! Not every day you get asked that on a phone by a stranger
Unfortunately it wasn't him and though he had an interest in Spitfire history and promised to research for me, I never did find Johnny's friend.
One day Johnny confided in me that he had some troubling symptoms. I remember calling to find out if these symptoms could be attributed to something simple but I was told to get him to a hospital immediately.
He very quickly deteriorated and shortly after was in the hospital and not expected to make it through the night.
My son was 8yrs at the time and wanted to visit Johnny. Surprisingly, Johnny's son WAS there but suggested to my son that he may not want to visit but Jess insisted.
Johnny was no longer able talk or acknowledge anyone. He was believed to have been unconscious and not responding to anything.
I stood on one side of his bed and Johnny's son on the other and my son came in, stood next to him and said "Hi Johnny! It's me, Jesse!"
At that moment, Johnny raised his hand towards Jesse....
I looked to Johnny's son, he looked at me and we both burst into tears...
Johnny was buried a few days later.
A handful of people including my 8 and 9yr old (who insisted on being at the funeral).
No expensive coffin...A box with a flag draped over it....
Johnny bravely served his country in WW2 Spitfire Regiment.
He left this world with only a few people caring.
I am proud to be one of them....
RIP Johnny xxxx

HiDeHo, hubby and I watched the laying of the poppy wreathes at the cenotaph in London. We do this every year and stand for the 2 minutes silence. It has become one of the annual events more so as we become older. Your story though has really hit home to me on many levels, not just about rememberance sunday, and now I can say no more than thankyou.
