Scotland Yard’s review of the Madeleine McCann case is expected to cost nearly £2 million in its first year.
Detectives from the Metropolitan Police’s Homicide and Serious Crime
Command are carrying out a re-examination of the original investigation
into the girl’s disappearance in Portugal in May 2007.
Since beginning work last May, the British officers have travelled to Spain and Portugal to pursue lines of inquiry.
Scotland Yard said it expected to recover £1.9 million from the Home
Office for the cost of the Madeleine case review up to the end of March
this year, of which it has already claimed for £800,000.
Madeleine was nearly four when she went missing from her family’s
holiday flat in Praia da Luz in the Algarve on May 3 2007 as her parents
Kate and Gerry dined with friends nearby.
Portuguese detectives, helped by officers from Leicestershire Police,
carried out a massive investigation into her disappearance.
But the official inquiry was formally shelved in July 2008 and since
then no police force has been actively looking for the missing child.
Scotland Yard’s review of the case, called Operation Grange, was
launched after a request from Home Secretary Theresa May supported by
Prime Minister David Cameron.
Critics have argued that the decision to bring in Met detectives to
review the evidence about what happened to Madeleine has undermined the
force’s independence and diverted resources from other crime victims.

Hi jd16.....I am pleased that for the first time the Press use the word "neglect" and question the amount being spent by the Government, methinks it
might just be the start of something big.

Unfortunately the real title of the article is "Met bill for McCann review hits £2m." For a minute I got my hopes up that maybe the tides were turning amongst the press. I do like the last sentence, however, "Critics have argued that the decision to bring in Met detectives to review the evidence about what happened to Madeleine has undermined the force’s independence and diverted resources from other crime victims."

Morning jvinta,
Well I don't know who added the word 'neglect' but it is effective .......maybe the tide is turning, hopefully.

Re: Drs McCann neglect of daughter costs tax payer £2,000,000
The tide is turning, in the press at least. Now that is interesting re. the Leveson inquiry.
Recently the press has published:
DE article on the probably murder by father of two children in Spain - bottom of article mentions McCs with perfunctory mention that it's not the same case.
DT puts 'harassment' by TB and upcoming hearing in quotes, leaving readers to make their own conclusions.
DM ran article on the SY costs and comments published were largely very negative re. the McCanns. Although I suspect that a lot were whooshed.
Now this press article, short neat and to the point.
On top that pay-outs to crime victims have been stopped - this was also in the news this week.
So all in all, public not looking very sympathetic to TM.

Iv"e just had another look and I copied the Article from Hardlinemarxists report, but all the Press Associations reports do not have the word "Neglect" so
I assume it was added by Hardlinemarxist.......sorry.

Morning jd16, don't give up hope, at least the Press are now querying the cost and I thought the DS comment about Kate's book was very apt. If they
win against Tony Bennett the Press will obiously wonder why they keep on litigating against anyone who dares to question them and finally stop
treating them like innocents.

Ouch that's got to hurt the Mcs, not 50ft or 100ft away but..... nearby.

I re-read it about 20 times, looking for the word "neglect" glad it wasn't there as I thought my eyesight was failing. Thanks for clearing it up Panda.

I"m going to write a nasty letter to HLM.
Seriously though dazedandconfused , I do think the tide is turning. With the Publicity Tony Bennett and Pat Brown will receive I think will make the U.K. Press change allegiance and the Public will turn against them as well over yet more litigation .

According to Sir Amaral the restaurant to apt5a was approx 100m, not quite as the crow flies BUT 100m indeed with no decent view from the tapas into their apt either - dining in your back garden "yeah right" the Queens garden perhaps!
I believe the newspapers are choosing their words very carefully FOR NOW, I am sure we are all reading between the lines, quite easy for any one person with a single brain cell to establish that the McCanns are GUILTY its only a matter of time now.
As one tweeter said which I found quite amusing - I quote "Lets hope Pat Brown is packing a tin opener - to open the can of worms" indeed I think she may - in this regard lets keep in mind that Pat Brown will be preparing for her Libel against McCanns and will be gathering every single shred of evidence she can, over a chatty lunch of grilled sardines dry white wine and Sir Amaral!
Hats off!

Re: Drs McCann neglect of daughter costs tax payer £2,000,000
This was the view they had. And remember from the statements it appears they had their backs to the apartments and they were all under the influence of alcohol so their senses will have been diminished. And the table was behind the plastic covering which would have impaired their view even more.....not quite your back garden BBQ gerry. It would so very easy for anyone to break into these apartments unseen by anyone in the Tapas bar, you have to really focus fully to have a chance of seeing someone up there, and whilst eating and drinking is anyone going to be this fully focused? Of course not, their minds are on the food, wine and chatting

Hi JD16 they the apartment was concealed behind the covering from the McCanns view
Not to mention the "abductor" would have gone through the gated entrance to the McCanns apartment around the side (out of sight), then up the steps (out of sight) and then to the childrens room (obviously out of sight) - at the very far end of the apartment.
I would say NOT well within the bounds of reasonable parenting. But that is of course only a problem if they actually left the kids alone.

Hi Gillyspot....and if you look through the plastic covering in this picture you can see it blurs your vision and this is viewing with a sober and alert eye. After any intake of alcohol your view will only diminish further, there is hardly any chance of seeing anyone up there

Very interesting - thanks for linking to the Podcast.
It always amazes me that Ferrari, Vine et al always try to ensure an apples vs. pears topic has the boundaries blurred so it appears to be apples vs. apples: In this instance, relating overall cuts to resources expended on a single Case.

Thanks frenchperson.....good find.
Note it's sycophantic James Murray who refuses to concede that the money spent on this review is wasted. His Boss Desmond stated the Express paid
for a Private Detective to investigate and obviously found nothing. No mention of the Parents making a contribution... I bet they have already given
Eddie notice, they don"t need any investigation now.

Thanks. Very depressing the way the SE Murray toes the line, slanders the PJ and talks in his estuary accent about 'sophisticated' ways to run an investigation. (Brilliant UK as opposed to the bumbling PJ). Perpetuating the myth, Murray can sleep easy CR must love him.
At least the conclusion is good.
