Two people working at a clinic in Nairobi’s Huruma area were at the weekend arrested for allegedly stealing and selling a minor for Sh15,000.
The two were arrested following a complaint by neighbours of a woman who allegedly bought the child in Juja.
Police say the saga started two weeks ago when a woman visited the clinic and informed workers she wanted a baby.
According to Starehe OCPD Aphiod Nyaga, the woman is a barren wanted a baby boy.
"She was informed the child can be sold to her at Sh15,000 and was asked to pay a deposit of Sh5,000," said Nyaga.
After two weeks, the workers at the clinic called the woman and informed her they got a child but not a baby boy as she wanted.
Nyaga said the workers told her they will give her the child at a different location.
They gave the woman a baby girl with receipts and birth papers showing she is the biological mother of the child who is two weeks old.
The woman went to her rural home in Juja but trouble started when her neighbours became suspicious and sought to know where she got the child.
"She became uncooperative to the locals who got agitated and reported to the local chief. The chief and his officials interrogated her and she revealed where she got the child," said Nyaga.
Officials from Thika Children’s Home were contacted and took the minor.
The woman took the police to the clinic where the employees, a man and a woman, were arrested.
Police said they are yet to identify the biological mother of the child.
