Daily Mail compensation to Mccanns?
Listening to Lord Rothermere (owner of Daily Mail) at Leveson inquiry this morning. I'm sure he said the Daily Mail paid compensation to the Mccanns.
Is this true? First I've heard. Does anyone know how much and more importantly, where did the money go?

Don't worry. I found the quote:
Still, I wonder how big a donation?
Firstly, it was obviously a very big story because of the nature of it. The McCanns encouraged publicity for very good reasons. And then there was, I believe, the problems of the jurisdiction [in] Portugal creating briefings. I think our journalists were unfamiliar with the way the Portuguese police operate … a number of allegations were made which we regret … and immediately rectified it and made a donation. It's a regrettable occurrence but it is the nature sometimes of journalism to do that.
Still, I wonder how big a donation?

I don't think it was the Mail. It was the Evening Standard which is part of the same newspaper group. Off the top of my head I seem to recall something like £100K being mentioned (but I could be wrong).
ETA Just on a point of accuracy in what I posted above - the Standard was part of Associated Newspapers when the "offending" story appeared but was later sold to Alexander Lebedev.
