Wedding fever has hit the small French Provencal village of Correns with rumours that Hollywood A-Listers Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are set to get hitched at their nearby chateau this weekend.

According to local newspaper Nice Matin, speculation was rife that the wedding of the year would be held on August 11, to coincide with Pitt's parents' 50th wedding anniversary.

But the paper says locals have now come to the conclusion that it will take place the following weekend, on Saturday August 18, citing as evidence the fact that a local festival of organic food - which usually takes place without fail on that particular weekend - has been moved to a week earlier.

Nice Matin says this points to the conclusion that the mayor, Michael Latz, wishes to avoid the date of the fair clashing with that of the wedding.

Other newspapers have reported that the wedding rumours were set off by preparations for a huge party at the villa, suggesting the couple are preparing for the nuptials in secret.

Guests, including Pitt's parents, are thought to have arrived at the £35m Chateau Miraval ahead of the bash, and that jeweller Robert Procop, who made Angelina's £160,000 diamond and platinum engagement ring, is also there.

Pitt and Jolie, who have been together since 2005 and have six children, announced their engagement in April this year.

The Sun quotes a source as saying: "Brad flew in to oversee preparations but they’re all here now. They say it's for (his parents) Jane and Bill, but some think this could be it. Even Angelina's private jeweller is here."

The guest list is said to include George Clooney, who is at his home on Lake Como, Italy, just a short flight away.

The paper says it is thought the wedding will take place in a private chapel in the grounds of their home, as civil ceremonies are only allowed at the town hall in France.

Patrick Mareschi, deputy culture secretary of Correns, said nothing was known about the wedding, but added: "Under French law couples have to get married at the town hall. Unlike with a religious wedding, there's no way a couple can hold a civil ceremony at their own home."

It has long been known that the pair were planning to hold their wedding at their £35m estate in the south of France.

Jolie has been married twice before - to British actor Jonny Lee Miller between 1996 and 1999 and then Billy Bob Thornton, from 2000 to 2003.
