The Chancellor waits to present the medals
Crowds at the Paralympics booed Chancellor George Osborne as it was announced he was to present the winners of the men's T38 400m race with their medals.
Mr Osborne initially laughed as the jeering at the 80,000-seater Olympic Stadium erupted but started to look uincomfortable as it continued.
The Government has been under fire from disabled rights groups for awarding a contract to carry out "fit for work" assessments to Paralympic sponsor Atos.
Mr Osborne before the medal ceremony
Rallies have been staged by activists in the past few days over tests which have been described as "damaging and distressing".
A clip of Mr Osborne's awkward moment quickly became a viral hit on social media, with his name trending worldwide.
Prime Minister David Cameron also got a less than enthusiastic reception from spectators at the Aquatics Centre.
Some members of the crowd booed when he presented Ellie Simmonds with her gold medal, although they were drowned out by cheers for the 17-year-old swimmer.
Mr Cameron shook Simmonds' hand and kissed her on both cheeks as he placed the medal around her neck.
Earlier he punched the air in delight as she powered her way to victory in the SM6 200 metres individual medley.
David Cameron cheers on Ellie Simmonds
Simmonds said she was proud to welcome the Prime Minister to "her place".
She said: "I've met him at his house, in number 10. It's great to meet him in my place, really, at the pool."
Asked what he said to her on the podium, she added: "It was just congratulations. I don't really remember much, but being on the podium was just an amazing atmosphere and an amazing experience really, to be on it second time running. I'm just really pleased."
Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt was also at the Aquatics Centre to see Simmonds win her second gold medal of the Games.
In contrast, former Labour Prime Minister and Chancellor Gordon Brown received a hearty cheer when he awarded medals to the swimmers.

Re: George Osborne Booed by Paralympic Crowd
If Osborne thought he was in for an easy ride he was very much mistaken. The games arena provided the ideal setting for a peaceful, spontaneous demonstration of the electorate's views of this arrogant obnoxious creature's management of the nation's economic recovery.
But surely he didn't expect tumultuous applause? He's blatantly ignored the plight of the working class, the retired, the disabled and the homeless whilst re-empowering the bankers, politicos and speculators who steered the nation into chaos and poverty under the corrupt Blair/Brown, New Labour administration, to continue to line their own pockets.

Re: George Osborne Booed by Paralympic Crowd
malena, I truly despair of Government and Cameron should be ashamed of this re-shuffling of Cabinet. The Transport
Minister is gone, she had the audacity to question a third runway at Heathrow.!! I distinctly remember a few years ago
the uproar from people living in areas to be demolished etc it was a really bitter dispute and was shelved. Now it is being
discussed again , yet Heathrow is already too big and proved deficient in the managment of the Passport Control. What is wrong with enlarging some of the other Airports? I hate Heathrow Airport, it is a sprawling mess and hard to find your way around.....imagine the extra traffic another runway would create.
Cameron has opted for a more right wing Government and much as he is a bit of a loose cannon Boris Johnson is proving
far more down to earth and popular. Of all the MP's, I think he would get things done and care more for the population
than Cameron and Osborne do.

You are probably right Panda, but the main political parties as a whole couldn't give a rat's bum for the electorate. If UKIP or the BNP were to moderate some of their policies they may well do better at election.Panda wrote:malena, I truly despair of Government and Cameron should be ashamed of this re-shuffling of Cabinet. There was talk some time back of building a new very large airport to the East of London to serve mainly the Far East, this should alleviate the noise problem over London and give greater passenger capacity. If this proposed new facility is built on land unfit for any other use why not invest in it? Heathrow is in an awful state of disrepair and a definite embarrassment as the alleged flagship of our nation's airports.

Re: George Osborne Booed by Paralympic Crowd
Malena, I would have respect for Cameron or Osborne if they said they were going to close the Tax avoidance loopholes
for starters.
Arlene Phillips (she of the Strictly Dancing BBC T.V. Show) was on T.V. this morning discussing poverty which has escalated in the U.K. A 40 year old Mother with a 2 year old son was previously interviewed , saying how hard it was to live on unemployment benefit and she had lost her job when she became pregnant.
Arlene said the definition of poverty has changed. Now T.V. ,Broadband and mobile phones are an important part of living and should be essential !!!
I note Apple is unveiling it's latest mobile phone, it has cash in the Bank to the tune of nearly US$ 1 Billion, shouldn't all these mobile phone companies be banned from producing yet more models of the same phone? It encourages people to spend more than necessary and since the phones are made in the Far East do nothing for local economy.
Is it me out of sync?
for starters.

Re: George Osborne Booed by Paralympic Crowd
To be in poverty should be based only on necessary items such as; food, clothing, gas, electric, water, rent, etc. Televisions, cars, laptops, Ipods and mobile phones are in no way essential items. I don't want to sound a, 'grumpy old bugger' but along with many others on here I can remember rationing and when times were really hard.Panda wrote:Malena, I would have respect for Cameron or Osborne if they said they were going to close the Tax avoidance loopholes
