Marathon effort ends in best time

He might not have been able to complete the New York Marathon, but heart doctor Doug Skehan said completing his own event in Leicestershire yesterday was just as good as the real thing.
Dr Skehan decided to stage his own marathon after the 26.2-mile run through New York's five boroughs was cancelled due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy.
Yesterday morning, less than 48 hours after arriving back in the UK, the 60-year-old completed his Not the New York Marathon challenge – in a personal best time of three hours, 40 minutes.
The consultant cardiologist, who works at Glenfield Hospital, has raised almost £23,000 in sponsorship for its heart unit, with donations still flooding in.
"I'm feeling pretty good," he told the Mercury after the run yesterday.
"I'm sure the experience was as good as running the New York Marathon.
"That's not to say the New York Marathon wouldn't have been a good experience, but this really was great.
"It was just a treat to run on such a gorgeous day around Charnwood, my local area. It matches what I expected from New York.
"It was my third marathon and I'm delighted with my time – which is seven minutes better than my previous personal best – because it's a difficult course over the Charnwood hills."
Dr Skehan, who lives in Quorn, celebrated with a few pints at his local after the race.
He said he wanted to thank Barrow Runners Club, which helped organise the event.
"They turned out in force, with people out on bikes to make sure I had support with drinks and nutrition," he said.
"They really put themselves out."
Debbie Adlerstein, fund-raising manager for the Leicester Hospitals Charity, said Dr Skehan was an inspiration.
"He was amazing and he sprinted to the end," she said.
"It's phenomenal and we're all so proud of him, for many reasons.
"He's clearly a fantastic doctor and the messages on his JustGiving sponsorship site show that.
"Also, he has raised nearly £23,000, which is a fantastic start to the next Glenfield heart appeal.
"I would like to thank him and also Barrow Runners, because they really did push the boat out, they went above and beyond."
Dr Skehan is hoping to use his sponsorship money to start a campaign to fund a large development in the hospital's cardiac department to improve facilities for investigations and treatments for patients with heart and vascular problems.

I'm not positive that is Gerry myself. The woman in green bears a passing resemblance to Kate so it's maybe someone's idea of a joke.
Doug Skehan was one of the original directors of the No Stone Unturned fund.

I don't think it's GM either; it's not his ugly mug and I agree, that person is too tall. Anyway the guy in the photo is smiling - not smirking and where's Hotlips? Cannot imagine the team missing out on a bit of free publicity and that guy's not even wearing the trademark T-shirt. Surely the Team would have taken over the event? Comments from Mitchell - exposure in all the national papers? Pictures of G & K elbowing Doug out of the way to cross the line first? Perhaps Dr. Skehan thought so too and didn't invite them to participate.

Not the New York Marathon!
Doug Skehan at the end of the "Not the New York Marathon"
Doug was devestated to find out that the New York Marathon was cancelled on Friday 2nd November- 2 days before it was due to go ahead having flown out to New York on the Wednesday.
However, to honour his commitment and to show how appreciative he is to all of those that have donated so far, Doug ran the "Not the New York Marathon" a 26.2 mile marathon in Leicester on Sunday 11th November starting at 9:30am at The Manor Pub in Quorn. Doug was accompanied by members of the Barrow Running Club, Team Hillier who have supported the Our Space Appeal, friends and some colleagues from Glenfield Hospital.
Members of the Barrow Running Club did Doug proud with supplying ground support, running support (they made sure that Doug had at least 2 people with him at all times) and setting up the Finish at the Manor House Pub in Quorn. Doug was originally accompanied by Gerry McCann, Consultant Cardiologist and Jan Kovac, Consultant Cardiologist. They ran the first few miles with him.
The Barrow runners devised the course and were an inspiration to everyone with their support both before, during and after the run. Doug said a few words of thanks at the end and bought everyone drinks. He did an amazing time of 3hrs 40 mins!
Also, at 11am, out of respect, all the runners stopped for 3 minutes to mark Remembrance Sunday.
Doug said “I missed a great experience not being able to run the NY marathon but had a unique experience in Leicestershire guided and supported by the Barrow Runners who shepherded me on a solo marathon of 26.2 mile through the Charnwood Hills
I was delighted to record 3hrs 40mins 43 seconds which exceeded all expectations and beat my personal best by 7 minutes. The support I have received through donations to Leicester Hospitals Charity is itself an amazing contribution which will be used to provide specialised facilities for patients at Glenfield Hospital in the future. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported me”
Doug has currently raised £23,000.00 for the Heart Unit at Glenfield but is still keen for that figure to rise. To donate online, please visit www.justgiving.com/DrSkehanNewYorkMarathon.
Thank you to everyone that has supported Doug and the unit so far.

How strange (but a pleasant surprise anyway) that for once Gerry was not allowed to take centre stage. Not even a mention of something like he was taking time out from the search for his daughter!

Iv'e had another look and still not convinced, Gerry is not very tall but this guy looks not far off 6ft. Also, the hairline, Gerrys' is receding at both sides but this Guy looks to have less and a bit curly Hair, The article says Gerry ran the first few miles, maybe this photo was taken after that, There doesn't seem to be that many runners , maybe more had dropped out.
Do we know what Doug Skehan looks like?

Does anyone know why Doug Skehan, along with John McCann (Gerry's brother) resigned as directors of Madeleine's fund? I was lead to believe that they resigned unexpectedly, but I don't know if this was the case.

If my memory serves me well, the resignations happened suddenly with no accompanying explanation, comment or word of thanks from the directors left on the board or indeed from the team spokesman. Perhaps a word of thanks to them would have been appropriate but its absence meant that the resignations came as a complete surprise and became an obvious subject for speculation; in fact they still are. I put it down to "ethnic cleansing" at the time. Just my humble opinion of course.

Thanks NBY, O.K. we know the front runner is Doug Skehan but I am still not convinced the guy in blue is Gerry. If you have a ,magnifier, turn it up and it looks less like Gerry, the hair line is different and he looks about 6 ft tall. Anyway, we have been told that Gerry joined in for the first few miles with others, so maybe he is not in it......I would have expected him to be running with Doug because he is quite a keen runner..
