Mum Kate McCann made more than £1million last year from her book about vanished Madeleine.

She ploughed the money into the search fund for her daughter which had run dangerously short of cash.

The fund’s directors said: “Income from the book has significantly improved the position.

"This will continue as a result of publication in other countries and the release of the paperback.”

Official accounts show the bestseller which came out in May 2011 netted £738,487 after tax.

Madeleine’s Fund hit £1.8million shortly after the three-year-old vanished from her family’s holiday flat in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007.

But by 2011, after four years of ­fruitless searching, it had dwindled to £125,000.

Kate and husband Gerry, both 44, from Rothley, Leicestershire, feared they might be unable to carry on the hunt.

But official papers filed with Companies House show all Kate’s book cash went to the fund.

And after a large percentage was spent on the continuing search and costly ad campaigns the remaining total now stands at £474,867.

The fund report revealed it was no longer paying private investigators in Portugal after Scotland Yard announced a major cold case review.

The McCanns hope this will lead to Portuguese authorities reopening their inquiries.

The report added: “The fund scaled back independent efforts to avoid duplication.

“It maintains sizeable resources so the search can be resumed quickly should the review not lead to the reopening of the case in Portugal.”

I can't see a 1million from the book in the accounts. But then, I'm not an accountant. Somebody?

Kate could NOT even be bothered to hop on a plane to the "hellish lair within a 10km raduius of PDL" to look for Maddie, are we supposed to beleive this BS??

Spin the book sales and the benefits to the fund - don't mention the news about trying to settle the action against Amaral out of court; all par for the course and very predictable. But I'm reminded of a commentary in the Times of India way back in 2007, that this is not a reality TV show and that it cannot be concluded with a majority voting for Madeleine to come back. In other words at the end of the day, it matters not what the public believe or do not believe - this whole matter will eventually be settled in court and when it is there won't be any pics of McCanns and friends posing for the media on the court steps this time.

I don't understand why "ploughing" money from the book sales into the search for Madeleine should make headlines. The general public, who haven't followed this case closely, would expect that!

It certainly was Kate's announcement at the time the book came out that every penny would go towards the (non-existant) search.

This non-story is just another reminder to any gullibles left out there that they can still send more money in.

It also smells like a PR preparation piece for the 'big story' (to be released at an as yet unknown date).

1) Kate's book money will be used for the good of the fund and search .
Result = Mr & Mrs Gullible say: Aww, ain't that nice ...

2) McCanns withdraw from libel case for the good of the fund and search.
Result = Mr & Mrs Gullible say: Aww, ain't that nice, twice ...

There is not enough detail in the accounts as to where the money has actually gone, as much of the money has been publicly donated money, that is the least that a "transparent" Fund would have done, itemised in detail exactly how the money has been spent, but as we are all aware from day one the "Fund" has hardly seemed transparent.

im not sure this article does the McCs any favours. In the Mail on line, it highlights the reasons why Kate felt it was ok to leave the 3 children, and the comments reflect the feeling that if they hadnt been left the children one of them would not have disappeared and the book nor fund would be needed. jimo.

Now that the "ploughing" has been done, today with the "sighting" in Brazil, the McCanns are spreading the fertilizer.

They certainly have spread a lot of fertilizer over the years!

Thanks NBY, arrived home midnight last night, flight was 20 minutes early!!!!

A long time ago someone obviously in the know said the McCanns had moved their Mortgage from Northern Rock to HSBC. My guess is the House has been paid for out of Kate's literary efforts. The first book apparently sold over £2 million copies, don't think the second did as well.

By admitting they are not paying Detectives there will be many wondering what almost half a million was spent on, and what exactly the £738,000 was made up of. If £530,000 was paid for serialisation by two Papers that leaves just over £200,000 in Royalties on over 2 million sales.
