A photo showing a teenage Diana Spencer that was marked "not to be published" has sold at auction in America for over $18,000 (£11,000).
The black and white image, apparently taken on a ski trip, shows Diana reclining on a bed next to a young man reading a book, with a bottle of whisky on the window sill.
It was acquired by the Daily Mirror just after her engagement to Prince Charles, but someone at the paper wrote "not to be published" across it, perhaps because it was believed it would have embarrassed the royal family.
It is not known who wrote the message.
The photo is dated February 26, 1981 - Diana married Prince Charles at St Paul's Cathedral in London on July 29 that year.
The auction house RR Auctions, based in Amherst, New Hampshire, said the photo comes from the private Caren Archive, which acquired it seven years ago when it bought the Mirror's photo library.
The auction house sold it in an online auction to an unnamed investor from California for $18,396 (£11,400). The starting bid was $200 (£126).
Diana died in a Paris car crash in August 1997, a year after her divorce from Charles. She was 36.

It seems perfectly innocent now but heaven forbid in those days that someone about to marry into the Royal Family had "a past".

Diana was only 18 yrs of age, not academic and since it was becoming necessary to produce an Heir , Diana was chosen. we don't know what went on behind closed doors and I still think Harry's red Hair and Diana's affair with James are linked.

That red hair is a Spencer family characteristic - honestly! I remember seeing a boy at Diana's funeral who looked very much like Harry but was actually his cousin George.

Just for you Panda, the two cousins together.
Indeed. The Ginger definitely comes from Diana's side of the family.

No, there certainly are a lot of people who have commented about Harry's red hair. If you look at photos of his uncle Charles Spencer, his hair has also been reddish at times, though not so much nowadays.
Here's a link to a photo of George's mother.
