British police requested the sample after the latest reported sighting of
McCann in New Zealand, nearly six years after she went missing while holidaying
with her family in Portugal at the age of three.


New Zealand Detective Sergeant Brian Camerson said then that police were
"absolutely satisfied" the child seen on New Year's Eve in the southern resort
town of Queenstown was not Madeleine.


There have been several other reported sightings of Madeleine in the same
southern region in recent years and police said DNA sampling was a conclusive
way to establish the identity of the New Zealand girl.


"Police will be sending a DNA profile to British police . . . to confirm the
identity of a girl who has been mistaken for Madeleine by a member of the
public," Detective Senior Sergeant Kallum Croudis told the Southland
Times.


The DNA, requested by Scotland Yard, was given voluntarily to police, he
said.

The Queenstown shop attendant who reported the possible sighting of Madeleine
said a girl closely resembling the missing youngster entered her store with a
dark-haired man on December 31.

"She had the same eye defect as Madeleine. Only a very small percentage of
the population have that and I was just staring at it the whole time to the
point I forgot what they had purchased," she said.

Just to put icing on the cake for the McCanns with regard to their claims against Amaral , we have yet ANOTHER sighting
as proof she is "findable", SY joins in this time.!!!!!! Also, the Trial against Tony looks like it has had a D Notice
slapped on it...........somebody very powerful must be behind this , Madeleine,s DNA could not be proved by the FSS

Now we have Australia commenting.....all grist to the mill with regard to sales of the upcoming Book.

  A New Zealand girl repeatedly mistaken for missing Madeleine
  McCann has given police a sample of her DNA which will be sent to Scotland
  Yard.
  
  The girl, who has not been named, is understood to have a similar eye defect
  to Madeleine, prompting members of the public to believe she is the missing
  child.
  
  The DNA sample is a conclusive way of proving her identity, said Detective
  Senior Sergeant Kallum Croudis of Dunedin Police.
  
  "The results of this process will not be known for some time," he told New
  Zealand newspaper The Southland Times.
  
  On New Year's Eve police launched a five-day investigation when a retailer
  became suspicious of a man and a young girl, who bore a resemblance to
  Madeleine.
  Kate and Gerry McCann say they will maintain
  their search for Madeleine
  However, they said they were "absolutely satisfied" she was not Madeleine,
  and it was not the first time she had been mistaken for the missing girl.
  
  Madeleine was nearly four when she vanished from her family's Portuguese
  holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in 2007 as her parents dined at a nearby
  restaurant with friends.
  
  Madeleine's parents, Gerry and Kate McCann, have never abandoned their
  high-profile campaign to find their eldest daughter, who would now be nine.
  
  Sightings have also been reported in Sweden, Belgium and Australia.
  
  It is not the first time a child has been DNA-tested in relation to the case
  of the missing British girl.
  
  In 2011, a young girl spotted in India with a Belgian man and French woman
  was tested and was also found not to be Madeleine.
  

I think this is being done out of exasperation by the parents as people will not stop pestering them about their child's resemblance to Madeleine.

I really hoped this was true. As it would mean SY are determined to rule out all of these sightings.

And if they wish to determine the facts by DNA it means by default they agree with the DNA findings already in the files.

on and on these sightings go -- i feel sorry for any yung girl growing up that even looks like madeleine -- there are some cranks out there --it has to stop by this mother of the girl saying she will give dna just to shut this up once and for all is enough to say it isnt madeleine --some poor girl is gonna get hurt by all this -- the mcanns have enough money to get on a bleeding plane and go into the nearest nz police station and sort this shite out but they wont do that will they -- if there was a remote chance it was my missing daughter hell or high water couldnt stop me from hopping on a plane -- look at how many leads kerry has looked into

Well said cass. yes, the McCanns could have gone to New Zealand , the Police officer who checked out the sighting earlier would have been the one to see and he could have arranged the DNA samples. It's all such Pantomime stuff , could Madeleine be in NZ? No, in Spain ? No, Belgium? No, oh Dear , where could Madeleine be .

(No doubt because the parents could show birth certificate and photo's of their upgrowing child). Nevertheless Scotland Yard wants a DNA test. The parents have voluntarily relinquished DNA material. The McCanns did not travel to NZ to see by themselves (as usual). Says all to me. Waste of money indeed.

Did not want to clutter with another report but seen this online...Scotland Yard says lookalike in Queenstown is not missing Maddy - but want her DNA anyway. wtf ??

Then this...British police moved quickly to quash speculation that the sighting was of Madeleine McCann.

A spokesman told IBTimes UK: "This is not a line of inquiry but for the sake of completeness the Metropolitan Police has requested a sample for comparison purposes."

My positive hat says that SY are sending the message that they have been thorough in looking at the abduction hypothesis so no complaints when the...

Gerry was quick to go to NZ when he was in pursuit of Kate though! Or was that more to do with the wine?

I conclude they (the McCanns) really know this is not Madeleine, so no need to catch a plane over there. SY will have told them. As has been stated, it is a matter of procedure for SY to be as thorough as they can be, to leave no doubts on this at all, so procedurally there must be a DNA sample in order to close this particular line of enquiry, to shut the door on it as tightly as they can and to ensure the McCanns do not keep bringing up this sighting. They are trying to avoid the accusation that this sighting was never dealt with properly.

Plus, yes I agree, its good for these parents in NZ to have positive proof that their daughter is not Madeleine, to shut up the nosy parkers over there too.

It appears from this Report that SY is not in fact wasting money to go to New Zealand, they are asking the Police to send a sample. I think it is disgusting that yet again SY is doubting Foreign Police , first of All Portugal, now New Zealand. If the McCanns insisted on this, they should have gone to NZ , given blood samples to the Police and visited the family of the child to try to explain why they need their daughters' DNA and apologise for the intrusion.

Exactly cass.!!! they used Madeleine's Hair supposedly to give to the South African guy with the gizmo, but only brought a Pillowcase from her bed for the Portugese Forensic Dept. It is probably in Madeleine's bedroom which has presumably been unoccupied that they will get DNA samples from her toys, books etc. The FSS could not confirm Madeleine was in the Car because they couldn't isolate her DNA.

They didn't demand the DNA from the girl...the parents OFFERED it ....to prove that their daughter is in fact their daughter.



I would be right pissed if I was the mother...after all, it isn't Madeleine....the girl actually HAS a mark in her eye.....Madeleine didn't.

think im having a derr min -- bear with me -- ok fss destroyed stuff samples -- so they have to have something to compare with --madeleines dna -- i mean they keep saying it wasnt madeleines dna in the car -- 15 out of 19 markers and all that -- by the press mentioning dna does anyone think they are taking the piss running this story out of the mcanns cos i do
