The editor of Woman’s Day has defended the decision, claiming they are
a "beautiful" set of images which were not taken by a paparazzi photographer,
but instead captured by a fellow tourist.
The Australian press have reported that the magazine paid up to $150,000,
almost £100,000, for the images.
They were taken as the Royal couple holidayed on the exclusive island of
Mustique, in the Caribbean, with the Middleton family.
They have been published today on the front page and in the gossip column of
Chi magazine, owned by the former Italian prime minister Silvio
Berlusconi.
Woman’s Day is to publish the images in their next edition, out
Monday. It has been reported that the magazine will also run pictures of Pippa
in a bikini.

St James’s Palace refused to comment on the fresh decision to publish, or the
claims that the images were taken by a holidaymaker and not a professional
photographer.
A spokeswoman reiterated: “We are disappointed that photographs of the Duke
and Duchess on a private holiday look likely to be published overseas. This is a
clear breach of the couple’s privacy.”
Woman's Day editor Fiona Connolly said she was sensitive to the sort
of pictures that shouldn't be published.
"In this instance they are a beautiful set of photos," she said.
She said the photos show the Duchess looking happy and much recovered from
the extreme morning sickness she experienced earlier in her pregnancy.
Ms Connolly said they were different to the paparazzi pictures of Kate
sunbathing in bikini bottoms on the balcony of a chateau in the South of France,
published by French magazine Closer last year, and over which Britain's
royal family has launched legal action.
"It wasn't a hard decision to run these photos,” she told Sydney's Daily
Telegraph, adding they were not taken by a paparazzi photographer but a
fellow holiday-maker.
"She is on a public beach and she was mingling with holiday-makers. It's a
very different situation to the nude photos, there is no photographer hiding in
the bushes and she is not inside a private villa."
Connolly, who claimed there was "furious" bidding between her competitors for
the photos in Australia, said while the British press may hold off on publishing
the images, they would be picked up around the world.
"The British have a great deal more sensitivity to royals than we do here in
Oz," she said.
The photographs show the 31-year-old Duchess striding through the sea and
strolling on the beach with the Duke, who puts an arm protectively around her
back.
Both look relaxed and the Duchess, whose pregnant belly is clearly visible,
is seen smiling.
“Kate and William in Mustique – the belly grows” was the headline on the
front page of the glossy Chi magazine, which called the holiday “a
honeymoon for three”.
“The mother-to-be, who is in her fourth month of pregnancy, wears a skimpy
bikini that shows off her increasingly prominent tummy,” the magazine said.
Last year photographs of the Duchess topless, published in a number of
magazines including Chi, which is known for running paparazzi
photographs, caused widespread anger.
The couple are on a private holiday on the island which prides itself on
offering celebrities the perfect retreat, where paparazzi are banned. The
photographs are believed to have been taken last week.
It is the latest in a long line of problems for the couple. After the furore
of the topless photographs, the Duchess was forced to announce early that she
was expecting her first child as she suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum.
Whilst she was in King Edward VII hospital two Australians DJs duped staff
with a hoax call in which they pretended to be the Queen and the Prince of Wales
– leading to suicide of nurse Jacintha Saldanha.
The royal family launched legal action last year against the French magazine
Closer over the topless images taken in France, with the Duke calling for
the photographer responsible to be jailed.
They have won a landmark legal case on blocking further publication of
topless photographs.

ITV's breakfast show This Morning have apologised for showing millions of viewers the Duchess of Cambridge in her bikini, because they forgot to block it out on their screen. The Mirror reports that:
This Morning has apologised "unreservedly" to pregnant Kate Middleton after her bikini bump photos were accidentally broadcast to millions on today's show.
The gaffe happened while presenters Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford were reviewing the morning's newspaper headlines.
The front cover of Italy's Chi magazine - which published the pictures last night - flashed up on viewers' screens without the offending snaps being blacked out.
It meant millions of people were able to see two pictures of the Duchess of Cambridge on a private holiday with Prince William on the island of Mustique.

I saw a photo of her in today's Daily Mail (no I didn't buy it!) She has both hands over her abdomen, but she still looks like a stick!
