Re: Madeleine McCanns's Father Calls for Press Law
I've been toying with 'Huge Rant', but think something like 'Huge Runt' would be much better. I've never been taken in by his 'wet insipid pretendy oh so vulnerable I need looking after' smile. I tried to watch Notting Hill, twice, abandoned it first time at 10 minutes, thought I must try harder since it's all the rage, got to 30 minutes and decided to turn it off and go outside to watch grass grow. It was near midnight and too dark to see the grass but I felt more gratified in spite of the lack of visible activity.almostgothic wrote:fred wrote:Iain Dale @IainDale

Think it was at that point he changed his mind!! Can't imagine why!!
I like Hugh , he has that disarming smile and wonder if he is AC/DC, that long relationship that broke up over the car incident, the fact he has fathered a child but not in a relationship with the Mother.
Keep up Panda, dear. He's had another baby with the same woman, and no, they still aren't in a relationship!!

It's a very long article kitti, so I'll copy just the last part about "Hacked Off"
‘The Metropolitan Police has now confirmed that the News of the World was not to blame for deleting the specific mobile phone messages of Milly Dowler that gave false hope too her parents that she was alive,’ he said.
The Guardian was forced to print an apology.
The following May, Scotland Yard’s Chief Inspector John MacDonald said in a statement to the Leveson Inquiry: ‘We cannot conclusively say whether any voicemails were manually deleted.’
And in his report, Lord Leveson accepted as much, saying the voicemail messages were in fact probably deleted automatically by the mobile network operator.
‘The inquiry does conclude on the lower standard of proof of the balance of probabilities that tampering with or illegal interception of Milly Dowler’s voicemail was not the cause of the “false hope moment”,’ he wrote.
Yet Hacked Off and its supporters dismissed the revelation as a minor detail.
After all they had got their inquiry and the report they wanted. All they needed now was to force the political parties to accept the Leveson recommendations in their entirety – and once again the Dowlers’ name was key.
Last week it emerged that the campaign group had made extraordinary threats against Labour in an attempt to ‘sabotage’ cross-party agreement on Press reform.
The group threatened to publish a statement in which victims of phone hacking led by the Dowlers would condemn Ed Miliband, Harriet Harman and Nick Clegg in the strongest terms for agreeing to a ‘dirty deal’.
Concerns about Hacked Off’s motives were heightened yesterday after a secret dossier drawn up by the group was leaked to the Mail on Sunday.
In it there is a discussion of how the Dowlers can be used to pressurise the Prime Minister. It concludes: ‘It is in their name that we act.’
Given the events of the past few days, some might argue that Hacked Off should remind itself of that final phrase.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2295006/How-Hacked-Off-hijacked-truth-tragic-Millys-voicemails.html
I will add that I have my suspicions about which person associated with the "Hacked Off," group might suggest something that amounted to blackmailing politicians.
Re: Madeleine McCanns's Father Calls for Press Law
I just find it disgraceful that the dowlers have been used especially by the Mccanns as they have supposedly suffered a tragedy...they have BUT not in the way they have said.
As for Hugh Grant, who the hell does he think he is...he was caught with his pants down, fair and square and not by the British police either...why shouldn't it be printed in the papers , he's dirty little sod and that's that and he was found out.
Blackmailing politicians ...heard it all now....celebs telling papers what they can or can't write about them in other words ...don't write anything bad about us, just nicey nicey things.
Gerry McCann.....he doesn't want the truth written in the papers only what he wants US to read, that's why their isn't anything in the papers regarding things happening in portugual and mr amaral unless off course it's something that will make them look bad and off course its quite obvious now the Mccanns want the press regulated for when the time comes, and it will, when the truth will unveil itself to the world off what really happened in pdl that week.

I agree, kitti. Celebs need the press to keep their profile in the public eye: Beyoncé has a new song and the Mail gives readers a taste of it. Works well for sales! Gerry McCann has needed the press to put across his stories in a positive light, but like a few celebs, he doesn't want the same press to be publishing anything negative so he now wants restriction on that same press that has helped him so much. The case against Amaral is coming up and Gerry probably doesn't want the details that come out in court to be splashed across the front pages of UK newspapers.
Re: Madeleine McCanns's Father Calls for Press Law
oh dear biting another hand that feeds them -- as for the dowlers i feel genuine sorry for them -- they have lost their daughter remained quiet in all this really -- why use the dowlers like this -- wasnt it gerry as the front man -- and hugh grant -- this isnt good you cannot court the press and goverment for your own needs then kick em where it hurts when things are not going your way -- not good at all

Re: Madeleine McCanns's Father Calls for Press Law
It has been acknowledged that the Reform will satisfy the Dowlers and let's be honest the Press has been very intrusive on peoples lives when really it is none of their business , they are just after sleaze, Max Mosely was a prime example.
My concern are the D notices slapped by Governments when they don't want to provide information or to stop investigation by the Press, Tony Blair was quick to use it when the Sunday Herald was investigating homosexuality in Government . This was a valid investigation against possible blackmail by enemy agents.
Britain has far too many Dailies for the size of the Country and the likes of the Sun, Mirror etc are just out to get more readers by intruding on people's lives. there must be a better way.

I was listening to sky news and there was an editor on their and he said, this isn't about hacking etc it's about people in power who want to keep things 'hidden' from the public .
In other words, they want to keep their dirty little secrets hidden and never to be published...money talks..
It restricts what people should KNOW and what people WILL know ...what they want you to know is not the same as 'in the publics interest'.
A law according to Gerry McCann.

Re: Madeleine McCanns's Father Calls for Press Law
There was a savage piece on the Hacked Off campaigners in the Mail yesterday, it showed a secret email that a whistleblower from the group leaked....
and...
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-2294980/The-Press-bastion-free-thinking-Left-managed-conquer-Until-.html#ixzz2Nsmoldxu
I didn't see the McCanns mentioned but the knives are out for some in the Hacked Off group
This strategy document was leaked by a Hacked Off whistleblower who was shocked by their underhand, cynical and manipulative approach. Yet these are the holier-than-thou campaigners who claim to be opposed to secret, underhand deals between politicians and the media! And the humbug-in-chief is surely their front-man, Hugh Grant, whose impassioned tirades against Press errors, rumour-mongering and lies should surely be immortalised on Hollywood celluloid."[/i]
and...
Yet after the Prime Minister abandoned cross-party talks, Mr Grant tweeted: ‘Rumour in Westminster that editor of Times instructed Cameron to call off talks. And our PM did as he was told. Murdoch rules. Still.’
This was immediately denied in the strongest terms by Downing Street. So who will legislate against Mr Grant for spreading defamatory and malicious rumours he didn’t bother even to check?

Re: Madeleine McCanns's Father Calls for Press Law
Press regulation deal is the 'dab of statute' sought by Hacked Off
So, with one bound, the triumvirate are free. David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Ed Miliband have found a way to enshrine press regulation in law without appearing to have instituted formal statutory underpinning.
The cleverness of their deal is that shadow culture secretary Harriet Harman was able to say that it means the press regulator will be enshrined by statute. And it also allowed culture secretary Maria Miller to say that the regulator is not enshrined by statute.
And both, employing their most sincere sounding voices, gave their different takes on the deal when speaking within minutes of each other on Radio 4's Today programme. Politicians, doncha love 'em.
Cynicism aside, this deal sounds - on the face of it - as if it has got all three party leaders off the hook. By passing a law that affects the nature of all royal charters, rather than one specifically devoted to a press regulator, they have found a compromise where none seemed possible.
In effect, what Harman has called "a small piece of legislation" can be said to be the very "dab of statute" that Hacked Off campaigners have been demanding since the publication of the Leveson report.
But there is a long way yet to go in this affair because, despite this political fix, the industry has still to decide on the details of the regulator.
Aside from the fact that there is no clear indication whether publishers and editors will accept the politicians' neat decision, they are still divided over the structure of the new regulation body.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/greenslade
JMO, but even if Hacked Off are happy with that little dab of generalised legislation, I suspect that it won't be anywhere close to meeting the Draconian demands of one G P McCann.
It will be interesting to see his reaction.
Will he fall in with the majority and accept the agreement?
Or will he be seen blustering and fulminating at anyone willing to point a TV camera at him?
I hope it's the latter.

Re: Madeleine McCanns's Father Calls for Press Law
IMO this is very serious, and l wondered it it deserved it's own thread? It's long but it's bad news for Hacked Off.
Secret dossier reveals how Hacked Off campaigners used 'cynical ploy' to exploit misery of murdered Milly Dowler's family to force new press law
A cynical ploy to use rebel Tory MPs to force through punitive new press laws was exposed last night.
An explosive leaked document reveals how campaigners from the Hacked Off group are secretly targeting Tory MPs ‘who want to bring David Cameron down’ in the hope they will sabotage Mr Cameron’s plan to block state regulation of the media.
It makes it clear Hacked Off despises the Conservative MPs they are wooing, but are under orders to suppress their loathing and exploit divisions within Tory ranks to muzzle the press.
The leaked memo says that supporters must swallow their natural ‘distrust and dislike’ of Right-wing Tory MPs and take advantage of their determination to ‘evict’ Cameron from No 10.
The document also reveals how Hacked Off ruthlessly capitalised on what it calls ‘the Dowler test’, a reference to murdered schoolgirl Millie Dowler, whose phone was hacked.
It says: ‘The expression “the Dowler test” has pushed its way into the popular lexicon, when in fact it doesn’t exist. Not yet that is. We need to define what the Dowler test is and make it binary.’
The claim that News of the World journalists had deleted messages on Millie Dowler’s mobile phone, giving her parents false hope that she was alive, provoked a national outcry and led to the closure of the paper.
It later emerged that the claim was wrong and that the newspaper did not delete the messages.
The leak is the first full account of the inner workings and methods of Hacked Off, set up after the Millie Dowler phone furore.
Launched by the Media Standards Trust, and with actor Hugh Grant as its highly effective frontman, it has demanded full transparency of connections between the press and politicians.
But it refuses to give details of its own funding or contacts with MPs.
The Mail on Sunday can also disclose that the Hacked Off strategy is receiving secret help from a Labour-leaning lobby company in which a former spin doctor to Peter Mandelson and John Prescott is involved.
The document, leaked on the eve of tomorrow’s crucial Commons vote on media ethics, discloses how Hacked Off planned to draw up a list of ‘30-40 hand-picked dissenters’ including those with grudges against Cameron, whether political or personal.
Senior Tory MP David Davis said last night: ‘For an organisation that represents itself as standing for honesty, transparency and high ethical standards, this shows astonishing hypocrisy and cynicism.
‘It is precisely the manipulative tendency we were led to believe that they deplore.’
The document has been leaked to this newspaper by a Hacked Off whistleblower appalled by the group’s manoeuvrings.
Speaking on condition of remaining anonymous, the whistleblower said: ‘I am shocked by their underhand approach.
‘It is time the public knows what they are really like. I feel very uncomfortable about the approach of their campaign.’
The leaked ‘strategy document’ was discussed at a Hacked Off meeting attended by the group’s founder, Brian Cathcart, and its directors, Grant and lawyer Charlotte Harris, who has represented phone hacking victims.
The meeting took place at the London offices of Ms Harris’s law firm, Mishcon de Reya, on September 19. Ms Harris has represented several phone-hacking victims.
Labour leader Ed Miliband and Lib Dem Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg will join forces in the Commons tomorrow to try to force through state regulation of the press in the wake of Lord Justice Leveson’s report into media ethics, set up after the News International phone-hacking scandal.
The outcome could hinge on how many Conservative MPs defy Mr Cameron and back the Lib-Lab alliance.
The leaked memo says it has only ‘one aim – an independent statutory regulator with punitive powers’.
It says: ‘Within the Government there is a cabal of discontents, Right- wing outliers and mavericks unwilling to toe the party line, happy to ignore the Whip and keen to evict the tenants of Downing Street.’
The memo identifies rebel Tory MPs with every kind of grudge against Cameron, and explains how Hacked Off can recruit them as allies.
The document, written by Ella Mason, Hacked Off’s head of campaigns who was a Tory aide in the 2010 Election, was approved at the September meeting.
This newspaper has also established that Hacked Off has also been advised by BBM, a lobbyist firm set up by two of Tony Blair’s former campaign chiefs.
BBM boss Alan Barnard is helping Hacked Off and BBM director Gez Sagar was present when the Hacked Off plan to target Tory MPs was discussed.
The BBM website says media director Mr Sagar was press secretary to Lord Prescott and ‘campaign writer’ for Mr Blair.
It omits to say he was also spin doctor for ex Labour Minister Lord Mandelson during the Millennium Dome fiasco.
There is no reference on the websites of Hacked Off or BBM to their connections with each other.
The Hacked Off insider said: ‘BBM is kept in the background. People say, “It’s best if Hacked Off stuff is not seen to be coming from them.” ’
In a statement, Hacked Off said last night: ‘Hacked Off was looking to recruit MPs of all political persuasions from an early date.
'It was never our approach to target one group or another: we thought that all sides would see that victims of press abuse had a right to be heard.
'Hacked Off do not employ BBM but we have worked alongside them.’
The spokesman confirmed that Mr Sagar had advised them on an unpaid basis.

Kitti, two intrepid Reporters brought down a President in the U.S. , a Country which is far more open on freedom of information. History will record that under Tony Blairs Government "spin" was the operative word, his Government is responsible for the state of the Economy Britain is in, a German Analyst said this earlier, that the Labour government was too profligate and the BOE too quick to go for quantitive easing . Add to this the FSA asleep at the wheel and this is the result. He said Osborne, despite the criticism of him , is on the right path and austerity must be key to Britains recovery , together with more exports.

I will add that I have my suspicions about which person associated with the "Hacked Off," group might suggest something that amounted to blackmailing politicians.
Sorry, hadn't read the thread but glad you both saw it too. I've copied it here for everyone to read, it's devastating for their 'truthful' campaign. How dare Hugh Grant capitalise on the Dowlers misery, just because he didn't want his own dirty secrets aired.
As l said the knives are out.....

margaret wrote:IMO this is very serious, and l wondered it it deserved it's own thread?

I hate all these scummy people and their background dealings with each other.
Why oh why do we continue to elect people who have no connection with real life in this country.
Labour/con/lib they are all the same, the same people from the same backgrounds making shadey deals with people in the media and other 'lobby' people.
The fact that Maria Miller felt that she could blackmail the telegraph into not publishing a story because she worked in connection with Leveson just makes me feel sick.

Anyone else think that Harman and Lord Leon B were the last people you'd want in any discussions due to their unedifying pasts?
Harman is known to support the Paedophile Information exchange and Lord B. was on THE LIST of 'guests' at that dreadful house that had parties. I've seen that list...he's on it.

The HACKED OFF Campaign have been trying to 'blackmail' some ministers and a document has come out that states that they are to USE the Dowlers in there campaign...disgraceful...
It's a very long article kitti, so I'll copy just the last part about "Hacked Off"‘The Metropolitan Police has now confirmed that the News of the World was not to blame for deleting the specific mobile phone messages of Milly Dowler that gave false hope too her parents that she was alive,’ he said.

Thanks margaret for copying the whole article. I hadn't read it through properly and was rushing to get to work, which was the main reason for just copying parts of it. The article makes quite shocking reading about a group that wants transparency.
Re: Madeleine McCanns's Father Calls for Press Law
What does "define the Dowler test and make it binary mean"?
Binary seems to be the "in" word at the moment. Do they mean "Of or employing two comparatively nontoxic chemicals that combine to produce a deadly poison" or are the rules for press regulation to be written in "0"s and "1"s

Well, the chemical solution (no pun intended!) hadn't occurred to me but the "0"s and "1"s had. I haven't a clue what "binary," means in this context.

The "Dowler test" itself is pretty meaningless given that what journalists did was illegal anyway.
ETA Maybe that is what they mean by binary - they want it doublely illegal. A rather pointless excercise because I would guess a penalty under the Communications Acts will always carry higher penalties than any imposed under press regualtion.
