Oklahoma police officers have said a mother and baby were among
five killed after a tornado struck a highway near Oklahoma City.
Highway Patrol trooper Betsey Randolph said officers found the bodies of the
woman and her daughter near a vehicle along Interstate 40 between El Reno and
Yukon.
The tornado hit during evening rush hour, smashing vehicles along a major
highway near the city, with reports of several motorists injured and others
missing.
The Oklahoma medical examiner's office confirmed five people had been killed,
and 50 others hurt - five of them critically.
TV footage of the tornado showed debris
falling from the sky
Ann-Dee Lee, of the Office of Emergency Management, said 80,000 people had
been left without power - with nearly 64,000 in the the Oklahoma City
metropolitan area.
She told Sky News: "We have numerous reports, although we do not have data,
of other injuries and homes that were damaged, but we expect to have a lot
better information in the morning when the sun comes up."
Two thousands passengers at the city's Will Rogers World Airport were moved
into underground tunnels and no flights were arriving or departing.
The warning also covered Moore, where 24 people were killed by a deadly storm
on May 20.
Flash flooding and severe thunderstorm warnings were in place for several
areas.
Reports said four confirmed tornadoes had struck in the area around Oklahoma
City, with winds up to 90mph and hail.
Extensive damage has been reported around the cities of El Reno and Yukon,
according to KFOR television.
Lara O'Leary, a spokeswoman for the local ambulance agency, said: "There is
very low visibility with the heavy rain... so we're having trouble getting
around.
"The damage is very, very widespread."
The region is in part of the US Midwest known as "Tornado Alley".

The death toll from tornadoes that ripped through Oklahoma and
neighboring states has jumped to 12.
At least two children are among the dead, confirmed Amy Elliott with the
state Medical Examiner's Office.

thunderstorm
Hospital officials said at least 87 people have been hurt, five critically,
when storms struck Oklahoma City and its suburbs during Friday rush hour,
toppling cars and leaving commuters trapped on an interstate highway.
The National Weather Service reported "several" tornadoes rolled in from the
prairie, pounding towns along their path and causing severe flooding.
It dumped around eight inches (20cm) of rain on Oklahoma City in the span of
a few hours and made the tornado difficult to spot for motorists, said Bruce
Thoren, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in
Oklahoma.
He said: "Some tornadoes are wrapped in rain, so it's basically impossible to
see, which is extremely dangerous. Somebody driving along really not familiar
with what's going on can basically drive into it."
The heavy rain and hail hampered rescue efforts. The Oklahoma County
Sheriff's Office said deputies helped with more than 10 high-water rescues
overnight.
Ann-Dee Lee, of the Office of Emergency Management, said 86,000 people had
been left without power - with nearly 64,000 in the Oklahoma City metropolitan
area.
Will Rogers World Airport was slowly reopening and some flights were
resuming. But the airport reported significant damage to the roof of the
terminal, and flooding damage to walls, counters and floors.

The latest tornadoes and storms come weeks after 24 people were killed when a
tornado hit Moore and Oklahoma City.
The region is in part of the US Midwest known as "Tornado Alley".
Forecasters said the severe weather would shift on Saturday into Illinois,
after it also hit neighbouring Missouri, where Governor Jay Nixon declared a
state of emergency on Friday.

Yes, after the last tornado, Sky news asked some people why they would still want to live there and they said they couldn't imagine living anywhere else! I'd be out of there like a shot!
