It will get hot and they will grow lots of Olives and juicy fat Melons. And the old men will still be sitting on the pavements playing domino's.
Shame they ever went into the Euro in the first place, messed up the whole holiday experience actually in some respects, having funny money and everything was cheaper.
Like everywhere else a change of currency and stuff gets rounded up,never down.

Hello Joyce I lived in Greece and they were the biggest tax evaders ever, from the top to the bottom. Many believe it was only the rich in Greece that evaded tax, that is not so. Â it was a national hobby. Â Try and get an invoice from the local plumber or electrician was like asking for gold. Â If the tax men came to the island unexpectedly, everyone know within the hour. Â Â It was their alternative economy, it worked perfectly whilst they had the Drachma but they had no chance when they joined Europe and then switched to the Euro, after cooking the books of course!
There was a saying then " Greece is poor but the Greeks are rich " I am sure that did not apply to all. Although in my experience the scruffier they looked the more money and land they owned. Â Many of them paid into private systems for their health knowing there was no money in the pot for anything decent in health care. Those people had the money to do this by avoiding taxes! Â 'The alternative economy'. Â Â
When we were first there the interest rate on money in  the bank were 22%, dropping to  18% a while later.  People put money in to earn the interest but never ever wrote a cheque or had any other dealings with the bank, everything was cash.
Because on the islands everyone owned a lot of land, they used to work, get money, tax free if possible and then build. When they had spent the money they would work again and then build more. Â That way they managed to build houses and apartments. Â Â They always left the buildings so called half finished, spikes on the top for another floor that never materialised. Â This way they avoided tax again. Â I could go on but I am sure that you get the Jist Joyce.
It has now turned into a disaster for the ordinary Greek people
Hope you are well x

THAT WHAT I UNDERSTAND AS WELL, THE PROBLEM MAY HAVE BEGAN WITH THE TURKS WHEN PEOPLE TRIED NOT TO HAVE ANYTHING WITH STATE AND AVOIDED THINGS LIKE PAYING TAXES,IT EXTENDED INTO INDENTEPENCE,WHEN GREECE APPLIED TO ENTER EU,THEY COOKED THE BOOKS MAKING OUT EVERYTHING WAS HUNKYDOORY WHEN FINANCE WERE NOT ALL THAT GOOD,LATER SOCIALIST GOVERNMENT FOUND FINANCES WERE NOT ALL THERE CRACKED UP TO BE.fuzeta wrote:joyce1938 wrote:Greece should not ever been able to join the commen market at all , I believe they had needed a lot more money to qualify ,but as ever there are ways and means ,now it has been a terrible problem ,all the folks that were high up but didn't pay taxes I have read a time ago now . Of course they do not want out of the union....they want all the other countries to pay while they get off scot-free. They obviously haven't got the money or, if they have, they don't want to part with it. They just want a free ride.
I imagine there is a grain of truth in some newspaper articles but I'm long past believing any of it.

Re: New EC Thread
to pay or not to pay is the question.
DEFAULT MIGHT CAUSE PROBLEMS.
MAYBE THE GREEKS SHOULD DO THE FOLLOWING,IT IS SAID THAT WALKING/BIKING CITIES ARE MORE PROSPEROUS,INTERESTING STUDY.

Hi badboy ,I am still up so will reply to you. I really do wonder if this loans and cash problem will just go away ,it seems no one wants to see them leave really ,it will upset the applecart for others . I heard a man from Greece speaking about ,not sending this money seperatly ,but sendin 4 lots together . well it could just be talk ,I just don't know how they would have been able to pick up already ,it has been so bad for last few years .just my rambling thoughts.joyce1938

I wish they'd just get on with it..they know where the door is. They should never have been allowed in in the first place.

Re: New EC Thread
To me Alexis Tsipras is really calling their bluff. He knows that they really do not want Greece to leave the Eurozone. Merkel and co obviously do not want this and for one reason only , they are running scared of the domino effect it could have. Why else are they hanging on and on? Just imo
