Missing Maddie's parents 'encouraged' by new inquiry

The parents of missing British girl Madeleine McCann said on Sunday they were "greatly encouraged" by new information about the disappearance of their daughter on holiday in Portugal in 2007.
Kate and Gerry McCann said they were hopeful there would be developments from a major appeal based on "substantive" new information which is to be broadcast on a BBC television programme on October 14.
"We are greatly encouraged by new information coming to light with pieces of the jigsaw now fitting together," the McCanns said in a statement.
"We are really hopeful that the forthcoming appeal on Crimewatch will bring further new evidence which will take us a step closer to finding Madeleine and to bringing those responsible for her abduction to justice."
A three-year-old actress will play Madeleine in the reconstruction on the Crimewatch programme.
British police said Friday that analysis of mobile phone data from thousands of people who were in the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz when Madeleine McCann disappeared could provide a new lead.
They are also investigating 41 potential suspects, although no arrests have been made.
Madeleine's parents have never abandoned their campaign to find their daughter, who was just about to turn four when she disappeared as she slept in the family's holiday apartment on May 3, 2007.
Her parents were dining with friends in a nearby restaurant at the time.
Portuguese authorities closed their investigation in 2008. But London's Metropolitan Police spent two years reviewing the evidence and announced in July that they were launching an investigation into Madeleine's disappearance.
British police are working with senior detectives from Faro, in the Algarve.
In a separate police probe, the Mirror claims a barrister has come forward to tell police a man bragged to him about seeing Madeline McCann alive on a Mediterranean island just two weeks ago.
The latest unconfirmed sighting of the girl, who went missing in May 2007, follows an confession at a party in August, the newspaper said.
The witness allegedly told the barrister specific information about where he saw the girl was seen but is now "terrified that she has been moved elsewhere."
UK police are reportedly treating the man as a credible witness.

MISSING Madeleine McCann could have been smuggled into the US by a paedophile ring with British connections, it was claimed last night.
An Angolan man who works in club security in the Algarve has told police he knows the gang who abducted the toddler.
He says the evil mob is run by high-profile Portuguese businessmen and lawyers, with international links – including the UK.
Marcelino Jorge Italiano, 36, claims a number of respected figures in the towns of Faro and Albufeira are secretly involved.
He also alleges an Algarve orphanage has been used as a source of vulnerable children.
The 6ft 4in bouncer, who fled across the border into Spain, gave his dossier of information on the gang to police in Huelva on Monday.
He took a lawyer and spent more than an hour talking to detectives.
He told them: “I know these people, I know they took Maddy, I can’t say how. I have been told that they have grabbed a dozen children in Portugal and Spain because they prey on the weak and the helpless.”
A source said last night: “Italiano has named names. He says he believes Madeleine was taken to the US some time ago and that the gang has the capacity to do this.
“He is positive they have taken many more children from the area and is convinced they are behind Madeleine’s abduction.”
Italiano is reported to have also given the name of a London associate of the gang’s leader.
Spanish police are now working closely with the Portuguese authorities to investigate his claims.
McCann family spokesman Clarence Mitchell, said: “As with all such investigations regarding Madeleine, this man has done the right thing by going to the Spanish police authorities.
“They will investigate it – as will the private investigators hired by the family.”

From the Mirror story above - 'UK police are reportedly treating the man as a credible witness.'
Really? A man meets another man at a party, who says he saw the girl a couple of months ago, but doesn't know where she is now.
Yeah, really credible.

The Mirror article:
New Madeleine McCann sensation: Witness tells barrister he saw girl ALIVE just weeks ago
6 Oct 2013 00:00
A shaken barrister has told police how a man boasted to him that he had seen missing Madeleine McCann just weeks ago.
In a sensational development the witness said he was stunned when the man confessed he had met the girl on a Mediterranean island.
So stunned he can't even name the island.
The conversation took place at a party and breaking down in tears, the lawyer, who we are not naming, said: “I can’t tell you exactly why I believe what I was being told. It was just a gut feeling.”
Why aren't you naming him? Why can't he tell us why he believes?
He said he had no option but to tell the police because of the level of detail the man gave when talking about his disturbing encounter.
The witness added: “I knew that by reporting it, it would compromise me in all sorts of ways. But it was something that I couldn’t ignore. If I hadn’t said anything I couldn’t have lived with myself.”
He said he was convinced the confession was genuine, despite many other people coming forward with unconfirmed sightings and false leads since she disappeared in Portugal, aged three on May 3, 2007.
When asked exactly what it was about the description he was given that forced him to act, the lawyer said: “I have told the police everything that I was told about her.
“They know what that was and that is why they have acted. I was able to be a bit more specific than just the island but I haven’t been able to tell them exactly where the man said she was. I am now terrified that she has been moved elsewhere.”
The confession was made at a party in the North West of England in August and the lawyer gave a full statement to his local force, Greater Manchester Police, the following day.
North West of England ...... hmmm ...
Officers are taking the information seriously and are set to prepare a file for Scotland Yard’s Operation Grange team, leading the hunt.
They're taking it seriously? We're laughing our asses off at this end ...
According to a source, the informant is being treated as a credible witness because of his profession as a barrister and a pillar of the community.
Ah, good old Mr A Source rears his tinty head ...
Credible, blah blah ... pillar of the community, blah blah .... just like doctors eh, yeah right.
He has been in contact with detectives within the last few days as they act on his crucial statement.
Last night a Greater Manchester Police spokesman said the force was unable to comment on the development.

Re: looks like maddie has been seen out and about according to a man at at a party
What is wrong with these people? Somebody at a party tells a complete stranger that the most famous missing child in the world is at such and such a place. The police are supposedly taking this seriously because the person reporting the story is a "barrister and a pillar of the community." Which community? If a blue collar worker has information on what happened in this case would they be ignored, because they're not part of the professional classes?
The 'Sunday Mirror' report goes on to quote the senior investigating officer: "... there are people out there who hold the key to Madeleine's disappearance ... they may be completely unaware of that fact." If you've never heard of the McCann case there's no way you're going to be able to offer up information that helps all these years later. Unless, of course, that somebody was involved in the crime. No other missing child case has had the resources that this one has. The only people that can help now are those involved in the crime.

Madeleine McCann: British man arrested in the hunt for missing girl
13 Oct 2013 08:48
Suspect held in a swoop by Greater Manchester Police after the Sunday Mirror revealed that a man bragged about seeing Madeleine alive just weeks ago
The dramatic arrest of a Brit in the hunt for Madeleine McCann has been described as “potentially highly significant”.
It has boosted the hopes of the missing youngster’s anguished parents Kate and Gerry.
A source close to the couple said: “The arrest only happened as a result of a claim that Madeleine may still be alive.”
The suspect was held in a swoop by Greater Manchester Police after the Sunday Mirror last week revealed that a man bragged about seeing Madeleine alive just weeks ago.
A respected barrister told us the man boasted to him that he had met the child on a Mediterranean island. It was claimed Maddie was “introduced” to the man this summer.
It is understood that the Manchester officers who made the arrest also seized computers from a private address and sent them for forensic examination.
Scotland Yard’s Operation Grange team have been handed the barrister’s detailed statement, which is rated as “high up on the credibility scale”.
The Yard officers had reopened the probe into the disappearance of Madeleine, then aged three, from the McCanns’ holiday apartment in the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007.
The dramatic twist in the inquiry comes as Kate and Gerry, both 45, prepare to appear in a Crimewatch appeal on BBC1 tomorrow night.
It is understood they are being kept fully briefed on developments.
We told last week how the barrister went to police after being told of the Maddie sighting.
Tourist resorts popular with Brits are now thought to feature in the active inquiry. A family source confirmed last night: “This is high up on the credibility scale.
"The barrister did the right thing by going to police. His information has gone into the Operation Grange system and I know they are working on it.
Madeleine McCann New hope: Madeleine McCann
PA
“The fact that he was prepared to risk his reputation by making the statement does suggest that it is credible. There are tip-offs and sightings all the time and many of them can be ruled out immediately as either complete fantasy or because there is no credibility to the source.
“This one is more credible because of the nature of the man who brought it to the authorities’ attention.”
The Sunday Mirror can reveal that the arrested man was at a party attended by the barrister at a private home in an upmarket suburb of Manchester on August 17.
During the evening, the lawyer had a conversation with the man, who told him he had met Madeleine on the island in the Med this summer.
The barrister, shocked and distressed by what the man said about the alleged encounter, contacted his local police force the next day then gave a formal statement.
The barrister, who agreed to speak to us but who we are not naming at his request, refused to comment further on the arrest.
He explained: “I cannot risk compromising the investigation or the search for Madeleine. If she is alive but now disappears again, I would never be able to forgive myself.”
But a separate source close to the arrest said: “A guy at the party told the barrister he had been introduced to Madeleine on the island in the summer.
“The barrister took that to mean that she was with another adult at the time but doesn’t know who it was or anything about them.”
It is unclear whether the barrister was able to give officers the name of the man he spoke to at the party.
Police have not released any details about the man they have arrested.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said in a statement: “A man was arrested in September on suspicion of possession of drugs and conspiracy to distribute indecent images of children. He has been bailed pending further inquiries. An investigation is ongoing into this matter and it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”
Gerry and Kate McCann New appeal: Gerry and Kate McCann
PA
Last week we revealed how the barrister broke down in tears as he explained what he had been told.
Speaking to us as he walked his dog in a park near his large home in the North West of England, he said: “I can’t tell you exactly why I believe what I was being told. It was just a gut feeling.
"I knew that by reporting it, it would compromise me in all sorts of ways.
“But it was something I couldn’t ignore. If I hadn’t said anything I couldn’t have lived with myself.”
Asked what it was about the description the man at the party gave him of the girl he said was Madeleine, the barrister said: “I have told the police everything that I was told about her. They know what that was and that is why they have acted.”
Meanwhile Kate and Gerry, of Rothley, Leics, are set to speak of their hope that their daughter will be found finally thanks to new evidence uncovered by a UK police probe.
Former GP Kate and consultant cardiologist Gerry will appear live on BBC1’s Crimewatch at 9pm tomorrow.
Detectives will appeal for help in solving the six-year mystery of what happened in Praia da Luz where Madeleine was on holiday with her parents and younger twin siblings.
The programme will feature a new reconstruction of events, with Madeleine played by a three-year-old girl.
The programme will also be screened in Holland and Germany.
Before this week’s arrest, officers had spoken to 442 people since Operation Grange began. The team had identified 41 “persons of interest”, including carers, residents and workers at the resort.
Det Chief Inspector Andy Redwood, the senior investigating officer, said: “I truly believe there are people out there
who hold the key to Madeleine’s disappearance.”
A Scotland Yard spokesman refused to comment on the arrest and said: “We are not providing a running commentary on the case.”
