The crucial difference between Smithman and Monteiro is that SY believe Smithman was carrying a live child and that she is still alive, but I believe the PJ believe Madeleine to be dead.

After all, were she abducted by Monteiro there are two scenarios. Either he murdered her at the time and disposed of her and has kept this a secret or he held her captive. But if he held her captive (in a hellish lair) and kept this a secret, surely she would no longer be alive now due to his own death which would cut off the only bit of care/food/water she got.

On the other hand he could have had an accomplice who is still keeping her alive. That being the case this would widen out the investigation completely.

But assuming, just assuming, Monteiro acted alone and in secret. What then, given the McCanns did not stay on in PDL and co-operate with the PJ? Just think, the PJ may have found Monteiro and a live Madeleine. After all, the PJ would have got onto this information sooner or later in the original investigation as it was always believed that the answer to Madeleine's disappearance lay very close to the PDL.

But the McCanns never co-operated, hindered the PJ, found their own suspect and then suppressed him into the bargain.

If, just if, Madeleine was abducted by Monteiro and he kept her alive, it would mean that the lack of co-operation from the McCanns delayed finding her alive and she may have died a captive, from starvation, all alone in 2009.

No wonder the McCanns seem to prefer not to comment.
