Amaral's Book
I have never read his book , but just looking for something in mccannfiles and came across this bit. He is describing how he had to get the injunction of the book overturned.
""Despite everything, until a certain moment in the investigation, the [McCann] family sustained and fed the abduction thesis. Nevertheless, at an uncertain date, the family suggested to consult a person that might, eventually, indicate the probable location of little Madeleine's cadaver. This fact became inexplicable to the members of the investigation, given the fact that it was the family members themselves who raised the possibility of little Maddie's death."

Yes, apparently it was KATE who insisted on Danie Kugel and his Snake Oil Machine being drafted in. Knowing full well that Mr Kugel only finds DEAD bodies. So what does that tell you?

That she is guilty Iris, why did not the Portugese Detectives question her at the time, she might have broken down.

Re: Amaral's Book
If a child has been truly abducted by a stranger, the most likely scenario is that the child will be killed within 24 hours, so I don't think it unreasonable that Kate would believe that Madeleine was dead.
Had Kate been brought in for questioning, surely she would have been made an arguido at this point, and as we know would have refused to answer all questions except one admitting to hindering the investigation into the disappearance of her daughter.
The time to interview the McCanns would have been immediately after Madeleine's disappearance. They should have been jailed for neglect rather than be free to get the media circus and fund up and running. Unfortunately political pressure disallowed this scenario and the PJ were forced to treat the disappearance as an "abduction."

Yes jinvta, the Police were much too lenient with them , Neglect carries a 1 yr sentence , that expired and neglect causing harm carries a 10 yr sentence .
I suspect the U.K. Government interfered , Tony Blair sent the U>K> Ambassador to Portugal to aid the McCanns. Either of those charges could have been made but I suspect the Portugese Police and Judiciary were a bit in awe of all these Reporters, PR , U.K. Police etc.
