Nigel Farage expenses: Has The Times bitten off more than it can chew?

The Times has devoted plenty of investigative energy to Ukip in recent months. Its treatment of the leader's "expenses" – he claims they are an allowance, an important distinction – is the latest installment in what might prove to be a long-running series. Mr Farage has responded with great vehemence, which suggests he knows the first rule of politics: when in trouble, attack. He has taken to the airwaves to accuse the Times of doing Tory dirty-work because it supports David Cameron. For good measure, he has also reminded anyone who will listen that the last time the Times took on a politician like this was when it accused the former Tory treasurer Lord Ashcroft of various irregularities, and had to apologise.
The newspaper is defending its reporting with vigour against Ukip charges that some of the sums are out, although we shouldn't forget that Mr Farage is not denying the broad thrust, namely that he is happily trousering EU money to pay for Ukip's political campaigns. There is something refreshingly outrageous about the upfront way Mr Farage admits that he is happy to take Brussels cash in order to do Brussels in. And that I suspect is where attempts to derail Ukip get tricky. It is no doubt the case that as the media begins to apply to Ukip the scrutiny that has been applied to the main parties, all sorts of things will turn up. But will they harm Mr Farage? I've posted my take on that above

Re: Farage could face investigation into EU expenses
Farage may stand for Election at the latest by-Election caused by the Tory Minister resigning.
although the encumbent had a 16,000 majority pundits think he would win . Expect the backbenchers to have the knives out for Cameron if he does.
