Re: What Happened to the Millions of £'s donated to the NOTW
So the pledges by Branson and Winyard made up off 1.5m..
The rest was actually put INTO the 'reward' by cowell, Rooney and others ....1m.....
Why did it say then that only 25,000 went Into the find Madeleine fund?
And WHY didn't it go to where it was supposed to go?

Re: What Happened to the Millions of £'s donated to the NOTW
My understanding was the celebs didn't hand over any dosh, they pledged it
I think the portion that went to the fund was readers donations but that doesn't explain why it went to the Madeleine fund and to to various children's charities as promised.

Re: What Happened to the Millions of £'s donated to the NOTW
Morning chrissie, you re right , the money the NOTW handed over to the Mccanns was readers donations. During my investigation into the Fund I saw the letter from NOTW to the McCanns stating the £1.5 million had been paid into THEIR account with HSBC. The McCanns had a Mortgage with Northern Rock and later cancelled it and placed it with HSBC, presumably to pay off their Mortgage.
This Blogger "Sauce" has obviously been investigating , problem is you can't respond to him without joining Google Pisara , something like that, it was all too complicated for me.LOL . What a bl***y cheek putting a Collection Box in the Ocean Club.!!!

Re: What Happened to the Millions of £'s donated to the NOTW
Sorry Panda but how do you get to £1.5m being paid into the McCann's bank account?
From the link you provided:
The paper had also invited readers to add their money - cash donations - to the headline pledges from the paper and its contingent of celebrities. It had set up a bank account , No. 52135590, Sort Code 40-36-15, at HSBC in Cathedral Square, Peterborough, just down the road from News International's accounts department.
The Donations were paid into an HSBC account which the NOTW had set up called The Madeleine Fund.
'I can confirm that the funds raised by the appeal were donated in April this year (2011) to the official Madeleine Fund and the fund created by News of the World is no longer active.'
They never disclosed the amount of these donations.

Re: What Happened to the Millions of £'s donated to the NOTW
Chrissie, this is in the "Sauce" comments if you click on his name. The £1.5 million was nothing to do with the pledges, it was public donations.

What happened to the News of the World readers' cash?
On May 13 2007, ten days after Madeleine McCann disappeared from an apartment in Praia da Luz, the News of the World announced the "biggest ever newspaper reward" for information leading to Madeleine's safe return. At 11.10pm UK, Sunday May 13, 2007, the newspaper posted this on its website:
Harry Potter author JK Rowling has made a significant donation to a £1.5m reward for the safe return of Madeleine McCann. The writer has made the largest, but undisclosed contribution to the News of the World fund, which means £2.6m is now on offer. British businessman Stephen Winyard offered a £1m reward earlier this week, and a colleague of Madeleine's mum Kate a further £100,000. Manchester (sic) and England star Wayne Rooney and sweetheart Coleen McLoughlin have also given £25,000 to the newspaper campaign while music mogul Simon Cowell donated a further £50,000. The reward is for information directly resulting in the safe return of the four-year-old who was abducted in Portugal nine days ago. Other personalities and leading business figures , including BHS boss Sir Philip Green, Bill Kenwright and Sir Richard Branson, have also joined together in the unprecedented show of support for the family. Madeleine's father, Gerry McCann said: "Anything that can be done to publicise that Madeleine is missing and help with the search is very welcome." Portuguese police have also endorsed the reward offer. The co-operation of the backers means this is the biggest reward ever offered in a newspaper. Pledges are still pouring into the reward fund - which will be paid out for the crucial piece of information that leads police to Madeleine. Sir Philip Green, who matched the News of the World's £250,000 contribution, said: "My wife Tina and I have children, and anything we can do to help bring this beautiful little girl back we will of course do without hesitation. "We are praying for Madeleine's safe return and can't imagine what Kate and Gerry are going through at the moment." Madeleine was snatched from her parents' Portuguese holiday apartment in the Algarve village of Praia da Luz on Thursday May 3. The offer is subject to standard News of the World reward offer conditions. Anyone with information should contact: Portuguese Police: 00 351 282 405 40 Portuguese (sic) Crimestoppers: 00 44 1883 731 336

Re: What Happened to the Millions of £'s donated to the NOTW
Sorry Panda, I am probably being a bit thick but I do have a migraine this morning.
Would you mind pointing me to where it says that the public donations amounted to £1.5M?
Also:
While the offers of support from those business people and celebrities were undoubtedly heartfelt and generous, they didn't actually cost them anything. No money changed hands between them and the newspaper.
They didn't actually give, donate or contribute to the News of the World Reward Fund. What they did was pledge. They promised to pay out for "that crucial piece of information that leads police to Madeleine", subject to standard News of the World reward offer conditions. (What those conditions were was never made public.)
Thanks

Re: What Happened to the Millions of £'s donated to the NOTW
This is where it is very confusing.
We should break it down to what was GIVEN and what was PLEDGED.
Winyard has OFFERED and not GIVEN....so it's 'virtual' = NIL
Collen and Wayne have GIVEN...= £25,000
Kates friend...doesn't say either £100,000 so we can assume PLEDGE = NIL
Simons cowell Has DONATED £50,000 so. we Can assume = £50,000
JK Rowling....won't say how much so we can assume = NIL
Sir Philip Green has matched NOTW £250,00 = £500,00 = Nil
Let's add this up.
Winyard 1m
Green and NOTW £500,000
Kates friend £100,000
JK Rowling ?
That's 1.6m roughly pledged...so that's virtually nil
Colleen and wayne. £25,000
Cowell £50,000
Whee has the 1m surplus gone.

Re: What Happened to the Millions of £'s donated to the NOTW
Once again we have a thread started full of Inaccurate and confusing 'facts'.
Read the account properly and you will see that all the big money promised is 'pledges'. That is not real money.
The article goes on to confirm that...
, a total of £21,257.32 was received and banked in The Madeline (sic) Fund HSBC Bank Account No 52135590 between May 2007 and November 2007. No other payments save those relating to this particular appeal were received from readers into this account.
That is not £1.5 million.
Unless Panda/Cordelia or whatever she is calling herself today would like to post some clear evidence that £1.5 million cash was paid into the mccanns account then i suggest this thread is put in the recycling bin with the rest of the misinformation perpetuated by this member.

You make a valid point, accusing the McCs. of paying their mortgage with fund money without proof could be construed as libellous and we know they like to sue.

Re: What Happened to the Millions of £'s donated to the NOTW
Hang on. the money from the NOTW was money which readers donated, which I understand was a separate account from that which any other celebrity donated to so, did any celebrity, rich person, whoever, DONATE money through the NOTW which are separate from those who PLEDGED money. anyone know..

But the McCs DID pay their mortgage (a couple of months' worth, anyway) with fund money, according to Clarence.
However all that can be taken from the NOTW stuff is that the McCs were in receipt of roughly £21k, not £1.5 mill.

Re: What Happened to the Millions of £'s donated to the NOTW
Some business men, withdrew their pledges, when the McCanns were made arguidos, but anyone who didn't withdraw their pledges, will still have that money in their possessions, for obvious reasons.

Re: What Happened to the Millions of £'s donated to the NOTW
I agree that the NOTW stated that the money donated by readers was given to the McC I am not questioning that. what I am questioning is did Cowell, JK Rowling and Rooney donate funds as said, or did they plege funds which of course is totally different.

Re: What Happened to the Millions of £'s donated to the NOTW
Precisely Tanzi..did coleen and cowell donate the money or pledge the money.
Thats £750,00 without the public donated money which could take it up to well past 1m
Did they write a cheque or transfer it directly.

Re: What Happened to the Millions of £'s donated to the NOTW
The article is clear. What was in the possession of NotW was paid to the Madeleine fund although it was to be paid to other 'Charities'.
About 21k so there was no money from Rooney or anyone else, all pledges to be used as a reward, which would be normal in such cases i would have thought.

Sorry Lioned but I don't in a million years believe there was just under £25,000 in that fund...never.

Were talking about the money being 'collected by the NotW towards the 'reward',nothing else thats what this thread is supposed to be about
We all know there was donations going direct to Rothley towers in envelopes to the 'find Madeleine fund (no stone unturned)' .
May be Rooney,Cowell,Branson,JkR and uncle Tom an all sent all their donations to kate and Gerry like Mitchell requested.
Thats a different matter that will take this thread to another 101 pages.
We are looking for the News of the World money and that article says £21k + was sent to the Maddie fund not £1.5 mill as is being claimed as fact.
