Madeleine McCann
Kate and Gerry McCann have said they fear Madeleine's kidnapper may "strike again".
The couple spoke to reporters after delivering personal statements at Lisbon's Palace of Justice as part of a libel case against former police chief Goncalo Amaral.
Mr Amaral made claims about their role in the disappearance of their daughter from the family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in 2007.
Mr McCann yesterday told reporters outside the court that the abductor "may strike again". He said: "There's an unsolved serious crime and there's a series of other crimes against children who have been on holiday, which have come to light, so at the very least these people need to be brought to justice."
The couple earlier told the court Mr Amaral's claims had done "severe damage" to their search for Madeleine.
Answering questions from judge Maria Emilia Castro during the hearing, Mrs McCann said their young son, Sean, had asked her about the allegations.
"Sean asked me in October, 'Mr Amaral said you hid Madeleine'. I just said he said a lot of silly things," she said.
Sean and his twin sister, Amelie, were just two when Madeleine went missing.
Mrs McCann said the couple made efforts to keep information about the abduction away from the twins.
"We try to anticipate if there is going to be any media coverage so they don't get any shocks and are prepared and confident to handle it," she told the court. "It is very distressing to us as adults so for a child it would be very distressing."
She also told the court the children were now old enough to use computers at school and home and had to be supervised.
The couple told the court former detective Mr Amaral's claims "enhanced" their "vilification" at the hands of those who questioned whether Madeleine had been abducted.
Mrs McCann, 46, said it had "added fuel to the fire".
Her husband told the court one group distributed a leaflet entitled 60 Reasons Why Madeleine McCann Was Not Abducted around their village and to their neighbours in Leicestershire.
Mr Amaral, who led the initial investigation into Madeleine's disappearance, released his book, The Truth Of The Lie, three days after the case was closed in 2008.
"We have had many sleepless nights over this book and... it caused distress and a lack of appetite," Mr McCann said.
A date for the next stage of the hearing is yet to be set.

What happens when the twins get too old to be "supervised"? Or are they planning to control their internet access through secondary school, college, university and beyond?

Well, Dr Gerry, just how many other children have been 'abducted' from PdL in the seven years since Madeleine went missing?
Oh, and by the way Dr Gerry, don't you think Kate's refusal to answer legitimate questions about YOUR daughter's disappearance, harmed the search for YOUR daughter?
Talking about searches... why didn't you or your wife search for YOUR daughter?
I'm not surprised you have sleepless nights, feel distressed and have poor appetite... They say conscience problems affect a person this way.....

Didn't Kate claim in her diary or in the book that she was sleeping okay again within a week?
It's hard to imagine that these two have any conscience at all with their behaviour over the past 7 years.

In one interview, Kate McCann stated that the first 48hrs were the worst, then things began to get easier and they began to sleep better. At the time I thought, that for the first 48hrs, the McCanns were worried that they would be arrested, hence the speed they obtained lawyers.
In my opinion, they were told after 48hrs that there was little chance of them being arrested, charged and prosecuted, that's why saw them smiling, smirking laughing, in most of their photographs. The reason why they kept saying they were innocent, was because they knew there was little chance of them being arrested, charged and prosecuted.
I still believe there is little chance the McCanns will be arrested, charged and prosecuted.

The Mccanns truly are quite beyond belief, even more beyond belief is the fact that they have got away with their lies and story changes for so many years. It´s also quite beyond belief that they say "jump" and the government and police ask "how high?". There is crime going on all over the country, there are children being abused, people being robbed, children abducted by estranged parents and taken to foreign countries, crime, crime and more crime, yet the only people who seem to matter are the Mccanns. The Mccanns who took millions of pounds supposedly to be spent finding Madeleine, but was used instead to pay their mortgage, fund their new high profile lifestyle, make a show of hiring dodgy detectives, PR companies to attempt to make them look like saints and expensive lawyers to sue anyone who dared to disagree with their constantly changing version of events. Why, because even if their stories are true, which obviously they are not, they are child neglectors who neglected their small children every night putting their pleasure before the safety of their children. They haven´t been condemned for that either by any authority, not once.why? Just why do the press, the police, the government, missing children organisations, etc etc slaver like starving dogs over this extremely nasty couple? Why is so much tax payers money being spent on this couple and why have they not been made to hand over all the money they´ve made in order to help pay for all this? Do I believe there is corruption at some high level involved? You bet your life I do and until such time as other families who have had children missing or still have children missing, then I will continue to believe that for some reason the backsides of the almighty Mccanns must be well protected at all times and they will carry on clicking their fingers and having the powers that be doing their bidding.

I'm sure that they'll have plenty of relatives in place to monitor them if they are, by then ... ahem ... not in a position to do it themselves ...
Wouldn't it be a delicious irony if S & A chose criminology or forensic psychology as their degree subjects?
The McCann case might even be a required course module.
They'd sail through it, what with their oodles of primary source material and all ...

Re: Madeleine McCann's kidnapper 'could strike again', say parents Kate and Gerry
Gothic, have you ever heard of the Moira Anderson case?
Moira was a schoolgirl who was abducted and presumed murdered in 1957, from a trip to the shops at Coatbridge. She was only 11. The remains were never found. Prime suspect was one Alexander Gartshore, a local bus driver and paedophile who was guilty of other child murders. He never publicly admitted to the abduction and murder of Moira, but privately confessed to his cell mate in Peterhead nick. He died in 2006 so we'll never know for certain.
But here is the twist - Moira's wee pal, one Sandra Gartshore, daughter of the prime suspect, grew up to become a teacher and an expert in child protection issues. She firmly believed her father to be guilty of Moira's murder and started the Moira Anderson Foundation, which helps families who are the victims of domestic violence, sexual abuse, and bullying. She was awarded an OBE for her work in 2006.
Kids aren't daft and they always find out the truth in the end. Always.

Brilliant post Marathon.
I agree with everything you say. I find it appalling that the McCanns have been allowed to ride roughshod over Goncalo Amaral and his family, in order to gain what rightfully belongs to he and his family. The McCanns are so twisted, that they are now using their own son, in their last attempt to gain Snr Amaral's money and no one appears to be stopping them. I wonder how long it will be, before the McCanns start to use their daughter in the same way!
My goodness, the McCanns must hold some secret that must never be revealed, if they can escape prosecution, for their heinous crime against Madeleine. Then behave in the appalling way that they have done, for the past 7yrs.

Didn't Kate also claim that Amaral's book caused depression, lack of appetite, lack of sleep &c &c in her libel claim?
Both of these claims can't be right, so which one is it?

And to think that after the first five days following Madeleine's disappearance, Kate McCann was sleeping well!

Not forgetting of course the first televised "interview" with the Mccanns when Kate was asked how the twins were coping without Madeleine, her reply, and yes I remember it well.........."err err well they never actually had much to do with her". The twins would never even know who Madeleine was if it wasn´t constantly pushed down their throats by their horrendous parents who have turned that poor little girl into some kind of fairy tale complete with monsters. Dreadful, dreadful people.

Where Kate was forcing them to paint her name in the mockumentary, that was just cringeworthy and painful to watch. :(

Alex Gartshore was a known paedophile when Moira disappeared. He was living across the road from the police station, in Dunbeth Road, Coatbridge, and yet he was never taken in for questioning about Moira. The cell mate left a list of local dignitaries, including police officers, whom he alleged had been involved in a paedo ring with Gartshore, but that list has never been made public in spite of numerous FOI requests.

"the he, she, they 'predator(s)/abductor(s)' may strike AGAIN" says McCann father GM.
THE TWINS, imo, MUST NOW BE CACKING THEIR PANTS, ON THE SCHOOL BUS, OR ANYWHERE THAT THE 'PREDATOR/ABDUCTOR' MIGHT BE ABOUT TO STRIKE AT THEM!
JEEZ, GIVEN WHAT THEIR FATHER SAID YESTERDAY, THEY WON'T KNOW WHO TO TRUST.
THAT NICE LADY?
THAT NICE MAN?
But, MAYBE, that is EXACTLY what the McCanns WANT!
"You twins can't trust ANYONE other than us"
ONLY US, ONLY US.
OUTRIGHT, ABSOLUTE, CONTROL!
'BRAIN WASHED' TO THE Nth DEGREE!
all, imo, obviously.

We may all be wrong in our predictions of the twin's outlook and understanding in later life.
Many youngsters today can become very independent and open minded, especially when in the company of more knowledgeable friends and not overshadowed by the overbearing prescence of parents who will always be frightened of more sensible and likely theories of Madeleine's disappearance coming to the notice of their remaining children.

You would think that Kate, as a mother and a Catholic, would remember the location of 20,000 people praying for Madeleine but she seemed to dismiss the occurence; I guess there was no collection for the Fund.

Staggering, isn't it?
But then they couldn't remember, when asked, the most significant 'sightings' or where they occurred.
This is another of their many unpleasant personality traits - they are such ungrateful bar stewards.

A reminder of the interview when - at 20 seconds - they seemed to be finding it difficult to keep a straight face when asked about sightings.
If you're able to stop the clip and move forward frame by frame using the arrow key, it's interesting.
