This comes from "a source". I would hope that forensics would be completed, considering Operation Grange have been at it for five years. At least the article mentions 12 million pound inquiry and the spiralling cost in the face of budget costs. It's also good that the article mentions that the McCanns lost the court case in April. People in the U.K. who might not be following the case as closely as others need to be reminded of these matters and ask if the "60 persons of interest" includes the McCanns.

I notice they used the word 'vanished' instead of 'abducted' and put in a pic of Kate and Gerry looking very happy!

Very good point "cherry1" - I read the article quickly and missed "vanished".

The parents of missing Madeleine McCann were not made suspects for abandoning their daughter because law bosses thought it was "natural" for English parents to leave their children alone.

Kate and Gerry McCann left three-year-old Maddie and her two-year-old twin siblings sleeping in their Portugal holiday home as they dined with friends at a nearby Tapas restaurant.

When they returned to the apartment, however, the tot had vanished, sparking a 10-year investigation into the mystery.

But detectives didn't make Kate, 48 and 47-year-old Gerry suspects for abandoning Maddie on compassionate grounds.

Former minister of internal affairs Rui Pereira slammed Portuguese cops for not making Kate, 48, and 47-year-old dad Gerry 'arguidos' (suspects) for abandonment.

Mr Pereira told Portuguese channel TV CMTV: "The error was not constituting the parents as arguidos for the crime of abandonment.

"At the beginning there was an extraordinary and ridiculous theory that said the English have very peculiar cultural customs.

"And therefore it was natural for them to leave the two-year-old twin siblings and the other three-year-old child alone in a bedroom for the parents to go out a few hundred metres away to socialise with their friends."

Portuguese authorities believed the English "truly have very specific cultural customs and it was natural to dine and drink", Mr Pereira added.

And he said there was "compassion" from the investigators towards the parents.

Moita Flores, a former police chief, told the show that if Kate and Gerry had been Portuguese, they would have been arrested for abandonment.

He added: "Have no doubts. If this had involved a Portuguese child our public ministry would have immediately set off measures which are in place to protect children.

"In our culture this kind of behaviour would have not been tolerated as reasonable. I am not even sure it is tolerated under Anglo-Saxon cultural values."

PAMadeleine McCannMaddie was left alone with her two-year-old twin siblings while her parents dined out
Pereira's admissions come after reports claimed Maddie was abducted during a botched burglary after she disturbed thieves who broke into her family's holiday home .

According to a claim in The Daily Star this week, the three-year-old was snatched after disrupting thieves who had broken into her family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal in 2007.

Only a handful of detectives are still assigned to the investigation, but the new theory could give them renewed hope they can solve the mystery of the missing girl.

Cops believe the three arguidos - formal suspects - could be key to cracking the case.

The latest rumours came after Met Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe announced cops have one final line of enquiry to pursue before the case is wound up.

Scotland Yard refused to discuss the final line of inquiry for operational purposes.

A spokesman said: "There is no comment while there is an on-going investigation."
Unquote.

The Ambulance Chaser Mitchell certainly did his job by muddying the waters when saying "Everyone does it in the UK". He needs to say just where he gets his info....

The Sun now has the story - "Maddie Search End Game - Brit cops confirm end of forensic work in hunt for missing Madeleine McCann".

The article refers to "its eye-watering cost". That should attract comments - none so far.

Didn't someone (possibly Clarrie) tell the Portuguese investigators that it was a british thing to leave children unattended which is why they thought it was??

The Portugal Resident (Natasha Don) has posted: "Met Police's 14 million euro Maddie inquiry has no plans for any further forensic work".

"Through his court battle with the McCanns, Amaral has maintained that the intention behind it was to asphyxiate him both financially and as a human being."
