Is THIS where Maddie was hidden? Hundreds of wells were NEVER searched

A WELL just 15 minutes from the apartment where Maddie disappeared is one of hundreds in the area reportedly never checked by investigators.

Ex-detective Roy Ramm said the well, which it's claimed was used to hide swag by local crooks, was an obvious place to look for clues.

It’s just 875 yards from the Ocean Club, the holiday complex in Praia da Luz, Portugal, where the McCanns stayed that night.

But one expat local with knowledge of the case told Daily Star Online the well was just one of many near the resort.
The Brit, who asked not to be named, said: "This was brought up by an ex-cop who said that local criminals used it all the time

"I don’t know whether that well has been investigated or not but if you pick wells on disused farms in the area of Luz there are lots of them.

"It could be that one, it could be another one, it could be none of them. For it to matter, somebody needs to have information that Madeleine was in that well."

Our source also said that – if a well was used to hide Maddie – her tormentor must have been someone with local knowledge who knew where to go.

And he was quick to emphasise that such a kidnapper would likely have plenty of other options when it came to covering up their crimes.

"People with local knowledge would have an awful lot of information about the best place to dispose of a body," the man said.

"You don’t need to stick it in a well police might or might not search. There are other ways of getting rid of it."

Daily Star Online investigated the well described by Mr Ramm, a Metropolitan Police officer for 27 years.

It sits in scrubland close to a dilapidated farmhouse and, after dark, is lit only by the moonlight.

Old appliances and suitcases lay broken nearby and more rubbish decays in the well itself.

The only access is from a busy public road or by traipsing through overgrown grasses.

Speaking in 2014, Mr Ramm told the Mail on Sunday the 42ft shaft was "difficult and dangerous".

He said: "It is clearly known to locals and possibly to local criminals as a place to discard of evidence.

"Whoever abducted Madeleine knew the local streets, alleyways and scrubland and used that knowledge to avoid detection."

Maddie’s parents, who were dining nearby when she was abducted on May 3, 2007, this year marked the 10th anniversary of her disappearance.

They’ve always believed that, despite sightings around the world, Madeleine McCann remained close to the complex she vanished from.

If this place is well known to local criminals as a good place to store evidence, I doubt the McCanns would use it to dispose of Madeleine's little body. If the Daily Star really wants to know where Madeleine is hidden, I suggest that the paper put the question to the McCanns.

Therefore, this inquiry which demonstrates the pertinent commitment of the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) in the resolution of the disappearance of minor Madeleine McCann, demanded from it the performance or coordination of several diligences as described in the various files, namely: the preservation of the location of the fact (although it had already been rummaged by numerous people as we will discuss ahead); several collections and examinations on the existence of eventual traces; a circumstantiated photographic report; the installation, in the first 24 hours of an extensive operational scheme, including the participation of several police and civil protection forces, in a total of over 130 elements; the reinforcement, in the next 24 hours of said operational scheme, with the mobilisation of over 300 members of police forces and public entities; the installation of control posts on roads and on the Southern terrestrial border with Spain; the use of sniffer dog teams; the use of exceptional search and rescue teams (aerial, terrestrial and maritime), alerts and diffusion all over the country and abroad.  

As a mere example, during the following weeks and on a permanent basis, two helicopters, four vessels and several all-road vehicles, apart from private airplanes and boats, were employed; in the same manner, the investigation operations were coordinated with the specific search operations, with hundreds of diligences performed, like the identification and the formal and informal hearing of citizens, door-to-door searches, in the impressive number of 443, at the residences and tourist resorts of Vila da Luz and its surroundings, the identification and search of vehicles, and searches on the terrain, in an area that started out covering 15 Km2, and progressively grew to 30Km2 (where special attention was paid to locations like wells, passages, tunnels, reservoirs and lakes).

Annex B. Report on the Sniffer Dog Search and Rescue Team

During the entire morning, searches were made of the beach and rocks, from Rocha Negra to the area of Ponta da Gaviota (an approximate area of 2 km). During the morning searches were also made of the areas surrounding Praia da Luz, with a radius of about 300 metres, as well as some abandoned houses, wells and plots of land inside P da L.

On 5th May at about 08.00 after a briefing, two teams consisting of 3 dogs each accompanied by officers from Portimao, again carried out searches in the whole of the Vila da Luz area, with an approximate radius of 2 kilometres, paying special attention to the rocky areas, abandoned houses, wells, drains, road verges etc..including plots of land within P da L.

On 6th May at about 08.00 and after another briefing from the Operational Command Post, it was decided that on that day they would again search all the plots of land with thick undergrowth within P da L, but that this time the search sections were divided amongst the teams. For this purpose the same teams of three dogs together with officers from Portimao who had been selected to help using the method of searching in file, carried out searches in all abandoned buildings, wells, rocks, verges of the EN125 and land surrounding P da L, in some cases reaching distances of 2 km.

On 7th May the same searches were continued, being extended to to the entire northern part of Almadena to the site of Espojeiro and the verges of the EN125 until the Boi valley.

On the following days the strategy adopted was to continue to extend the perimeter of the searches to the villages of Barao de S Miguel and Burgau, Barao de S Joao, Bensafrim and Salema. Searches were carried out in all of these locations, as well as adjacent land, vegetation, abandoned houses, wells and main roads.

On 11th May in the morning, the team went to Odiaxere to visit a forest near the Boavista golf course. The whole forest was searched using the in file method, including some abandoned houses, wells and rail track.
