They should have considered being close to Madeleine in May 2005, if they had, according to their version of events she wouldn't have disappeared.

Poor brave McCanns. Hope we won't see pictures of them coming out of church. At least the flowers and ear splitting grins will be absent. No wonder almost everybody is sick to death of them.

I saw a brief, angry, bad-tempered interview on TV with the McCanns in Portugal. I then read a rather syrupy, sycophantic report in the Daily Mail online about this visit. There was an opportunity to send in comments after the article, and I noted that by far the bulk of public comment approval and disapproval (red and green arrows) were scathing about the McCanns and their activities. I thought I would send in a comment myself. I did so, and it was apparently accepted. However the article now has 'no comments have been sent in so far' under it... Huh?

comperedna, I noticed the same, there were 63 comments and 60 of them were anti. That is why they have vanished. I 've just posted another one asking if freedom of speech is also banned at the Mail? Very much doubt it will get published though.

Thanks for that information, Fred. I began to think I had got the procedure for entering comments wrong, or I was clicking in the wrong place to read other people's, or something!

So Kate feels closer to Maddy in PDL, does she. Strange that. You usually feel closer to a person if you are in the place where the missing person spent most time . Usually it is the house where they lived. In this case, maybe she should go and sit in the creche. After all that is where Maddy spent most of her time whilst she was in Portugal.

You usually feel closer to a person if you are sitting by their graveside.

The parents of missing Madeleine McCann have made an emotional pilgrimage to the Algarve resort where their daughter disappeared.

The pair had wanted to return to Praia da Luz in southern Portugal for some time, Kate McCann said. "I have longed to come back here for personal and emotional reasons," she wrote in an update on the findmadeleine website on Saturday afternoon.

"Although our pain feels much rawer here, it is comforting at the same time since we feel closer to Madeleine."

On Saturday night they made their second visit of the day to the village's tiny church where they had sought comfort in the days, weeks and months following the disappearance of their oldest child, shortly before her fourth birthday.

It was the first trip back for Mrs McCann, 41, since the family left the resort in September 2007, three and a half months after her daughter disappeared from a holiday apartment while her parents dined with friends in a local tapas restaurant.

Mrs McCann and her husband Gerry, also 41, from Rothley, Leicestershire, earlier paid a predawn visit to the same church. "Early this morning we went to the lovely little church of Nossa Senhora da Luz. It was so quiet and peaceful - a real sanctuary," she wrote.

It is understood the couple, who are both Roman Catholic, made the private visit at around 5.30 in the morning to ensure maximum privacy. They spent some time praying before taking a stroll along the deserted beach.

Mrs McCann wrote: "We walked down to the rocks on the beach, with its crashing waves and sense of vastness and freedom - another place where I've always felt able to reach out to Madeleine and find a little solace."

They made the poignant return as they prepare to face the third Christmas without their oldest daughter, who vanished on the night of May 3, 2007.

Their younger children, twins Sean and Amelie, who will be five in February, were being cared for in England by relatives.

The McCanns had flown to Lisbon late on Thursday to attend the first day of a court case that challenges the publication of a book written by the detective who led the original investigation into their daughter's disappearance.

Goncalo Amaral, who was removed from the case after several months, wanted to overturn a ban on his book The Truth Of The Lie but a judge rescheduled the hearing after his lawyer failed to turn up for health reasons.

Mr Amaral's assets and bank account were frozen after the McCanns obtained an injunction in September preventing further sales of his controversial first book, which alleges that Madeleine died in the holiday apartment and questions her parents' account of events that evening.

The McCanns' Portuguese lawyer said the couple had left for Praia da Luz on Friday afternoon following the postponement of the case until January.

"Kate is a broken woman," said Isabel Duarte, who is representing Mr and Mrs McCann in the libel case against Amaral.

"She was crying when she told me she wanted to go to Praia da Luz. She says it where she feels closest to Madeleine."

One question, if the Mcs think Madeleine was abducted, why on earth would she be still in Portugal? Going over there to be near to Madeleine is just a publicity stunt in bad taste. They know she is not there.

They have been to the evening mass and may be going to the apartment tomorrow.

Checking to make sure they didn't leave anything incriminating behind and maybe another quick scrub of the tiles and walls?
I wonder if they will have an escort or if they will be 'allowed' to wander round the round the apartment on their own?

When I was a kid, church's were open 24/7.

Mind you, my priest didn't fiddle with the kid's, as far as I know. He liked a drink and to socialise, but no one had him down as a deviant.

Wander if they will take a look at the shelf in the wardrobe ?

Not even to film them as they go in and as they come out? If they are considering going back to the apartment why tell anyone? This very public pseudo-private visit has turned the whole thing into a bigger circus than ever - what an insult to a missing child.

Why aren't the journalists asking the McCanns about what Dave Edgar said, his insistence that Madeleine is being held within 10 miles of the very area they're visiting at the moment? Why is no one looking for her? Why aren't the parents looking for her? Isn't it more important to go and search that area than go to the church or the apartment? Do they think they'll find her in the church or apartment?

The questions are endless; the answers? - silence, keep Madeleine's whereabouts out of the conversation, this is all about the parents, who's Madeleine?

Will Keir Simmons ask them how the searching went? Doubt it - wouldn't want to bring Madeleine's possible whereabouts into the conversation. Libel is MUCH more important.
