Police Find Body Of Missing Newburgh 4-Year-Old

Marc Anthony Bookal, 4, of Newburgh, has been missing since Monday, Dec. 14, 2009.

Police in Newburgh found the body of missing four-year-old Marc Anthony Bookal on Wednesday after he disappeared from his home back in December.

The boy’s body was found in a wooded area after reopening the search early Wednesday morning. Police said they felt it necessary to go back and re-canvass some of the areas covered in deep snow during the colder winter months.

Anthony’s mother told CBS 2 after his disappearance in December that she refused to give up hope, even keeping his Christmas gifts under a tree that she wouldn’t take down.

“Until he comes home, it will stay up,” Christina Bookal said.

“I can’t take it anymore. I have three kids,” Christina said. “I have to be there for them, but it’s hard when one is gone. It’s not complete.”

Chistina’s live-in boyfriend, Cory Byrd, had been charged with child endangerment. Anthony had been in his care the day he disappeared, and now Byrd is in prison for a parole violation.

The search resumed for Bookal on January 8 after extreme winter weather had made it difficult immediately after his disappearance. They searched the grounds of a vacant school and other buildings several times, and also combed the entire block.

Police even combed the area up to the Hudson River.

It is unknown why police decided to resume the search again on Wednesday, a seemingly random date, but sources believe they were provided a tip to canvass the area were he was eventually found.

No arrests have been made nor have police announced any suspects.

Sources tell Fox 5 news that the body of Marc Anthony Bookal, 4, has been found three blocks from where he was last seen in the town of Newburgh.

The boy disappeared on December 14 from his mother's home on Benkard Avenue. He had been left in the care of the mother's boyfriend.

Investigators spent several weeks searching for Bookal in and around the Hudson River.

On Wednesday, police resumed the search and discovered the body.

Cory Byrd, 30, the boyfriend of Bookal's mother, was charged days after his disappearance with endangering the welfare of a child. He was also charged with a parole violation.

Newburgh is about 60 miles north of New York City and has one of the highest crime rates in the state.

Police are awaiting results from the autopsy, which began at 11 a.m., on the body believed to be that of Marc Bookal, the 4-year-old boy who disappeared in December.

Police found the small body Wednesday inside a bag in a wooded area in the southeastern part of the city, several blocks from Bookal’s home.

City police Lt. Charles Broe said, “We stared the search in the block where the house was, then the blocks around it, and expanded the perimeter out. That’s when the trooper dog caught the scent.

“They were walking right along the sidewalk,” he said.

Broe the body was found up a steep hill, about 25 to 30 feet from the sidewalk.

He believed the body was there “for some time. ”

Sub-freezing temperatures may have slowed the decomposition process. That may have made it more difficult for cadaver dogs to pick up any scent, when teams first searched for the boy in December and January, he said.

Broe said the decision to recanvass the area Wednesday was based on the weather.

“People are convinced that we had known something,” he said. “The weather had turned, then we got so much rain, which melted the snow…we discussed that it would be prudent for us to go back and start again.”

Broe said the body was “not as decomposed” as he would have expected.

Newburgh police Chief Eric Paolilli said Wednesday a preliminary investigation of the remains seemed to indicate they belonged to a small child. Paolilli said it appeared the body was placed at the location with the intent of hiding it.

“There may be some difficulty in that the normal course of business to identify unknown remains would be to use fingerprints or dental records, and a child this young may not have those available,” Paolilli said.
