One of James Bulger's killers was sent back to prison today after pleading guilty to child porn charges.

Jon Venables, now 27, appeared at the Old Bailey via video link from prison to admit downloading and distributing indecent images of children.

James' mother Denise Fergus, 42, was in court to hear him enter his pleas at the hearing in central London.

It was Venables' first appearance in court since November 1993 when he and Robert Thompson were convicted of killing two-year-old James.

But in a highly-unusual move, he could only be seen by the judge hearing the case - in order to protect his new identity.

He spoke only to confirm his name and plead guilty to each charge and was later sentenced to two years in prison.

In an extraordinary statement through his solicitor after the sentencing, Venables said he thought about the murder of James 'every day'.

He apologised for viewing child abuse images and said he was 'genuinely ashamed'. He vowed to turn his life around and 'never go back' once he is freed for a second time.

Venables and Thompson were controversially released on licence and handed new identities in 2001, when they turned 18.

But Venables was sensationally recalled to jail in February for breaking the conditions of his parole.

The reasons for his return to prison were shrouded in secrecy until a ban on reporting the case was partially lifted by a High Court judge last month.

The Old Bailey heard today how he had been in trouble with the law twice in 2008 before he was caught with the child porn - once for a street fight and later for cocaine.

Venables admitted downloading 57 pornographic pictures of youngsters and distributing more than 40 indecent images of children.

Some of the pictures involved children as young as two and videos he downloaded showed young girls aged around eight being forced to perform a sex act.

The Old Bailey heard the murderer was only caught because he was worried his true identity had been discovered and called police.

He was told to gather his belongings and was trying to delete the files from his computer and remove the hard drive when his probation officer arrived.

He was taken to a police station with the machine and it was later examined by officers.

Louis Mably, prosecuting, said: 'A total of 57 indecent images of children were found.'

They included eight at level four - the second most serious level and featuring sexual activity involving children, the court was told.

Venables used peer-to-peer computer software to download the videos. They can take days or weeks to download, during which time they are available to other users.

Mr Mably said the computer history 'indicated the defendant had an extensive history of searching for and downloading indecent images of children using the internet'.

The court heard Venables had admitted he was sexually aroused by the images. He told police in March he considered it 'breaking the last taboo'.

In a police interview on March 18, he said: 'I am responsible for downloading, viewing and deleting indecent images of children on my computer, of which I have been aware through my solicitor. The images were for my own use. I viewed the images alone. I have never shown the images to anyone else.'

When asked by officers about a video involving an eight-year-old girl, he said he had 'no intention' of having sex with a girl of that age.

Mr Mably said: 'He said he felt guilty about what he did and told himself "How can I be looking at this?".'

One of the charges related to distributing porn to convicted paedophile Leslie Blanchard, from Chelmsford, Essex, in February 2008.

Venables chatted with Blanchard via Google Hello, claiming he was a 35-year-old married woman called Dawn Smith who abused her eight-year-old daughter.

'Dawn said she was interested in pictures of parents abusing their children. Dawn said she and her husband abused their daughter,' Mr Mably said.

'Blanchard said he would like to met their daughter and abuse her himself. It appeared that Dawn agreed a price for selling her daughter for a few hours.'

Venables broke off contact abruptly, saying Blanchard could not see the girl, the court was told.

The killer was arrested in September 2008 on suspicion of affray after he and another man became involved in a drunken street fight.

He was given a formal warning by the Probation Service about breaching the good behaviour expected of him as a condition of his licence.

Later the same year he was cautioned for possession of cocaine after he was found with a small amount of the class A drug, which was said to be for personal use.

Mrs Fergus arrived in court with her new partner Stuart and had a badge bearing her son's face and 'Justice for James' pinned to her lapel.

Usually the press and the public can see a defendant on a video link screen placed prominently in court.

But Mr Justice Bean rejected media applications for Venables to be visible and the layout was re-arranged.

A television screen was placed directly in front of the judge so that only he and not even the laywers could see.

Venables and Thompson were aged just ten when they abducted James from a shopping centre in Liverpool and killed him on a railway line in February 1993.

The toddler's battered body was found by children on a freight railway line 200 metres from a police station and more than 3km from the Strand shopping centre.

Days later, Venables and Thompson were arrested in connection with the murder of James, and later charged.

They were the youngest to be charged with murder in Britain during the 20th century.

In November 1993, they were convicted following a 17-day trial at Preston crown court.

They were tried as adults and ordered to be detained for a minimum of eight years.

The pair were released in 2001 with new lives and a new identities, despite James' family being adamant they should not be freed.

Legal restrictions mean their new names and details of their lives cannot be disclosed or up-to-date photographs published.

Only two other people in Britain are protected in this way - child killer Mary Bell and Maxine Carr, the ex-girlfriend of Soham killer Ian Huntley.

Leading psychiatrist Professor Tom Fahy said Venables could have been on a 'self-destruct mission' because he was unable to cope with the anonymity of a normal life.

The expert from King's College London said: 'Venables took extreme risk in the crimes he committed. One would almost think he was trying to get caught.'

He added: 'One theory for his behaviour is that he was on a self-destruct mission. His actions might be interpreted as him wanting to get back into an institution because he is not coping. His behaviour could also be a form of anti-social, arrogant defiance.'

He had pictures of a small girl being raped but claims he 'had no intention' of trying to procure a young girl.

On an internet chat he claimed he was a woman called dawn who had an 8 year old girl he abused and could provide to someone else.

So as you can see he really learned his lesson when he was jailed for murdering a 3 year old child in an unimaginable way.

Lock him up for LIFE or let me have 5 minutes with him - l don't condone violence but make a special exception for rapists and paedos - he is scum and always will be.

I find it amazing that he only goes down for two years. This story make sme feel sick. What does he have to actually do to get locked up for good ???

It appears to qualify that sentence by saying he'll stay inside until safe to release?? Hopefully, never!!

I am pleased to say that condition added. Venables says he has learned his lesson and will be different when he is released. I just don't believe a word of it. I've heard that kind of thing so many times before from juvvies going before the magistrates, with their hair cut neatly and wearing smart clothes. Next week, they're tanked up on booze and bud and robbing some poor sod's house!

Venables was in a really comfortable detention centre, with the kind of resources that many young people dream of. And he hasn't been rehabilitated. I reckon he doesn't have the personal resources to change and I hope he's banged up for a very long time now. He's going to find that it's not as cushy as ***** House.

Grinning broadly, with his feet up in his special secure cell, James Bulger’s killer ­toasted his sentence of just two years for child porn crimes and gloated: “Great! Just the result I wanted.”

And cock-a-hoop Jon Venables, 27, barely able to restrain his glee, boasted: “I’ll be out again by the time I’m 30.”

Venables’ vile reaction turned the stomach of prison guards – including a favourite officer whom Venables had asked to escort him to the prison video room from where he gave evidence to a judge at the Old Bailey on Friday.

In a long, self-pitying statement read to the court, Venables claimed to be racked by remorse at collecting ­appalling child-porn images and posing online as a twisted mother trying to sell her eight-year-old daughter to paedophiles for sex.

But in marked contrast to his public contrition, he was led back to his cell swaggering and smiling at his good fortune in escaping a jail term of up to 10 years, a sentence which has ­provoked widespread outrage led by James’ mother Denise Fergus.

A prison source told the Sunday ­Mirror how after being sentenced Venables was “smiling for the first time in weeks.

“He was cock-a-hoop and laughing and ­joking. He was saying to guards that he was happy to stay in prison for two more years and that he would cope fine.

“Venables was bragging, ‘I’ll be out by the time I am 30’. He said that was what he had always hoped for when they sent him back to prison in March.

“As the guards shut his cell door, he was grinning from ear to ear.

“There wasn’t a flicker of remorse over what he had done. It left everyone sickened.

”At one point, he even said it would give him time to finish the history course he is doing.”

The Sunday Mirror was first to reveal the charges, which saw him recalled to jail in March for breaking the conditions of his licence attached to his 2001 release for James’ murder.

On Friday Venables had his identity concealed as he admitted to the ­charges via video link beamed from the jail where he is being held to the Old ­Bailey.

He also issued an apology through solicitors, claiming he was full of ­“remorse” for his actions.

Our prison source added: “Before ­appearing via video link, Venables had a haircut, shaved and cleaned himself up.

“He was dressed in a suit and tie. Normally, he is a slob, lounging about and not taking any care over his ­appearance.

“As he went to give evidence, he ­requested his favourite guard to escort him down and stay with him.

“He was there for a few hours, as he waited for the sentence as well.

“As Venables stepped into the prison’s interview suite to give evidence, the whole jail went into lockdown.

“There had been a news blackout, meaning no radios or TVs could be switched on.”

News quickly filtered through the jail that Venables had been hit with the two-year sentence and guards and were amazed by his reaction.

Venables is always kept away from other inmates.

Maybe if they had done real jail time it may have hit home the severity of their actions , i know the other one seems to be keeping a low profile and rehabilitation may have worked, and i know they were only ten when this happened, but they were old enough to know the difference between right and wrong.I can only hope some day the parents of James will get the peace and justice they deserve.

Indigo, he has done far more than enough....what we need are real judges that will stipulate a life sentence means life, especially where children are the victims; not the pathetic weak politically correct creatures which seem to abound in our judicial system.

As he boasted to so many people about his identity, why should he get ANOTHER one costing £250,000.

So everytime he gets wasted or duggged up he will boast YET again, what is the point off giving yet another identity....THROW THE PIG TO THE WOLVES WHEN HE WALKS THROUGH THOSE PRISON GATES...

I read that the other lad has emigrated to Canada and hopefully has been rehabilitated. I think this young man should be ordered to settle in another Country too, while he remains in the U.K. there will always be Press
speculation about his whereabouts since he is grown up now and probably known to a few people. It is one
reason why James Parents can never have closure.

Well i heard Thompson went to australia (sorry carly), met a girl, had a child and when the g/f found out she left him and disappeared...i would too!!

Im sure a newspaper tracked Thompson down...so if THEY can do it....
