The male red deer, known as the Emperor and reputedly the biggest wild animal in Britain, was reportedly killed by a trophy hunter in Exmoor, Devon.

He was apparently shot legally after the landowner was paid for the shooting rights.

Emperor was 9ft tall to the tips of his antlers and is believed to have weighed some 300lbs.

His demise comes several days after his picture was published in newspapers.

One local deer enthusiast said two shots had been heard close to the main Tiverton to Barnstaple road.

He added that a group of people were out watching stags close to the spot where Emperor was killed earlier this month.

Peter Donnelly, an Exmoor-based deer management expert, said he was angry the animal had been shot during the mating season.

He told The Times: "It could be that he didn't get a chance to rut properly this year, therefore his genes have not been passed on this time round.

"The poor things should be left alone during the rut, not harried from pillar to post. If we care about deer we should maintain a standard and stop all persecution during this important time of the year."

I have to admit I am not really an animal lover but this article has upset and incensed me. Why are people allowed to destroy such beautiful animals as this???

And as for saying it shouldn't have been allowed in the rutting season....it shouldn't have been allowed...full stop!!

I thought the days of the 'Great White Hunter" had long gone... there is no excuse for hunting here in the UK, as poor as many of the population are they do not go out shooting wild animals.

Why then should a member of the sporting "gentry" be allowed to hunt for trophies? How is this man/woman able to obtain a license to possess and use a weapon and ammunition powerful enough to bring down a 300lb animal?

This story smacks of drunken buck toothed drooling degenerate "Titled Gentry" making a return to the estates of rural England to slaughter the wildlife under the guise of 'culling' old and sick animals in order to relieve their sexual inadequacies and sadomasochistic tendencies they are unable to fulfill due to the ban on Fox Hunting, Badger baiting and Hare coursing.

It is inbred scum such as these that get the English a bad name.
