Car Bomb Blast in Stockholm, Sweden

A man has been found dead at Bryggargatan in central Stockholm. A few minutes before a car exploded at Olof Palme street nearby. At least one person has been taken to hospital.

The police also confirmed reports that two people were hospitalized, two with minor injuries. They were nearby when the car exploded.
Police bomb team was sent out in conjunction with other techniques. The alarm came in at 16:52 on Saturday. Police sealed off the areas around the cars.
- We have received 50 calls to 112, says Bengt Norberg, manager of SOS in Stockholm.

Many cars on site
At least three cars from the fire service is in place and six ambulances.
According to the Stockholm police officer Petra Sjölander, it is therefore only about a car that has exploded. Police received a first phase information indicating that there were two cars that were in a fire.
The car was standing at the intersection of Queen Street / Olof Palmes gata.
- 17:02 we got the alarm about repeated explosions. A few minutes later a person was found badly injured at the intersection of Queen Street and Bryggargatan, "said Sjolander.

One person has been killed and at least one other hurt as two explosions rocked the centre of the Swedish capital, Stockholm, reports say.

A car blew up near the busy shopping street of Drottninggatan, and another explosion hit nearby shortly afterwards, AP quoted police as saying.

A man's body was discovered after the second blast, the agency reported.

Swedish Aftonbladet newspaper showed images of a burning white car. The cause of the blasts is not yet known.

Rescue services spokesman Roger Sverndal said the car which exploded had contained gas canisters, AP reported.

A former AP worker, Gabriel Gabiro, was close to the second blast.

"I saw some people crying, perhaps from the shock," he told the agency.

"There was a man lying on the ground with blood coming out in the area of his belly, and with his personal belongings scattered around him."

(CNN) -- A car explosion killed one person and injured two others Saturday in central Stockholm, Swedish police said.
Multiple blasts went off on the car in a major shopping district in the city, full of holiday shoppers, according to police spokeswoman Petra Sjolander.
"It is likely that this was some kind of gas tubes that have caused the car to explode multiple times," she said.
The victim was found a few hundred meters from the scene, she said, adding that the connection between the man and the explosion is not immediately known.
Sjolander also declined to identify the cause of the explosion, saying "we don't want to speculate" whether it was a manmade blast or an accident.
Two other people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, she said.
"There is no risk of any further explosions as we see it and the car will now be examined," Sjolander said.

The man who died in Bryggargatan blew himself to death.
He carried six interconnected pipe bombs but only one exploded.
He also had a backpack full of nails and a suspected explosive.
- Had it exploded at Queen Street had been a massacre, "said a source.
Police bomb technicians examined the dead man's bag by using a bomb robot. Radiographs show that it contained a large quantity of nails and an unknown substance which is suspected to be explosives.
Shouted in Arabic
According to witnesses on the ground should the man have shouted something in Arabic before the bomb detonated.
According to Aftonbladet the man died of a pipe bombs which he carried on the body. On the site they found five pipe bombs believed to have been connected in series. For some reason the cables were torn between charges of leaving only one of the pipe bombs exploded. It was almost certainly the one who took the man's life.
People were shocked
Some bystanders were shocked and had hearing loss when the explosive charge fired.
When Aftonbladet contacting SAPO, they refer all questions regarding the evening's explosions at Stockholm police. But the terror alert in Sweden has not changed during the day.

Sweden Rocked by Bombings

At least one person was killed and two others wounded as a car exploded in Stockholm's Drottninggatan road, a major shopping street in the heart of the city.

There was a second explosion just a few streets away, only minutes later.

In reference to the second blast, Gabriel Gabiro, in statements to the Associated Press said, "There was a man lying on the ground with blood coming out in the area of his belly, and with his personal belongings scattered around him."

The cause of the blasts is unknown but the car did have gas canisters inside.

Rescue spokesman Roger Sverndal confirmed the gas canisters in the car bomb and that the two injured people had suffered only light injures but were nevertheless taken to the hospital.

According to Svenska Dagbladet, Swedish officials have stated, after preliminary investigations, that the dead man "blew himself up."

Furthermore, they report, a letter threatening terrorist action was sent to Swedish officials prior to the two explosions. The author of the letter blamed Swedes for their silence regarding the Lars Vilks 2007 drawings depicting Mohammad as a dog, and it also raised complaints over the presence of Swedish troops in Afghanistan, adding "now your children, daughters and sisters will die just like our brothers, sisters and children are dying."

The author went on to add, "Our actions will speak for themselves."

For now, it appears as if the explosions were, in fact, terrorist attacks on the Swedish capital at the start of the Christmas shopping season.

But it's an excuse?? How bloody appalling though - so fortunate that it wasn't the blood bath that they had undoubtedly planned.

An man has blown himself up in central Stockholm, reports news agency TT. At the same time a car containing gas canisters exploded nearby. Police are remaining tight lipped as to whether the two incidents are connected.
According to TT, an e-mail was sent to them and to Sweden's Intelligence Service, SÄPO, ten minutes before the explosion, addressed to "Sweden and the Swedish people", where the writer mentions the "Swedish silence" over controversial artist Lars Vilks and the Swedish military presence in Afghanistan, and writes "now your children, daughters and sisters will die, like our brothers, sisters and children are dying".
TT reports that SÄPO are refusing to comment on the mail, and cannot confirm either that it has anything to do with the explosions in the centre of the city.
Speaking to newspaper Dagens Nyheter's website, a witness claims it looked like the dead man had been carrying something which exploded on his stomach. There are also reports that he had a bag containing nails close by.
Two other people were slightly injured close to the exploding car.
