Police Exhuming body from 1989 to check for sexual abuse

Post  margaret on Tue 12 Apr 2011, 9:45 am

I'm amazed that they'll be able to check for signs of sexual abuse from a person that died in 1989, great news for victims.

God forbid this should have happened to Maddie the person that did it will hopefully NOT go unpunished should her body be found.

To the police....

Sex abuse probe police exhuming body in Devon

The dead sister of a convicted child sex attacker is to be exhumed from a church graveyard in Devon by police investigating a sexual abuse case.

Police said they had evidence Belinda "Binny" Day, 27, had been sexually abused before her death in 1989.

Her brother, Adrian "Tommy" Dance, was jailed last year for 21 years for a string of sexual assaults. Police said he had not yet been questioned.

Her body will be exhumed from St Peter's Church in Budleigh Salterton.

Officers said they had "potentially a number of suspects" whom they believed were behind the abuse.

Officers working on the investigation - Operation Goodrich - said they had evidence she was the victim of a "serious sexual assault" and said they needed to disinter her body to obtain new DNA evidence.

Det Sgt Zoe Noel, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said they believed Ms Day's body held "crucial evidence".

Ms Day took her own life in March 1989.

Police said they had not yet interviewed Dance, 54, in connection with the alleged offences against his sister.

Dance, of Queen's Road, Budleigh Salterton, admitted 15 sexual offences when he appeared at Exeter Crown Court last June.

Five other charges, which he denied, were dropped.

It is the first time Devon and Cornwall Police will exhume a body from religious grounds.

Det Sgt Noel said: "It is not a decision we have taken lightly. It is distressing for all concerned."

Ms Day's body is to be exhumed on Tuesday and is expected to be returned to her grave on Wednesday.
