'One Dead' After Explosion In Central Oslo

One person has reportedly been killed after an explosion in the Norwegian
capital Oslo - and as many as eight are thought to have been injured.

Early reports suggested it happened at a government building which contains
the offices of the Prime Minister.
He is reported to be safe.
The explosion was also thought to be near Norway's biggest tabloid
newspaper.

Witnesses say several people were hurt in the
explosion

Journalist Asgeir Ueland said that Oslo is a popular destination for people
from other parts of Norway.
He said the streets were crowded: "It happened when people were packing up
for the weekend and leaving their offices.
"There were lots of people with blood on their faces and severe cuts."

A picture uploaded to Twitter by user @Morganflame

Craig Barnes is in Oslo and said that he is shocked at what has happened.
"It is a very nice, safe place to live.
"Norwegians are very friendly and I think everyone gets on.

Witness Craig Barnes Gives His Account

"I think this is going to change a lot of views now. There will be questions
regarding safety."
Nearby offices in the Norwegian capital have been evacuated.
Large amounts of glass and metal have been seen in the street.

The blast happened at a building in the centre of the
capital

Police and fire officials have declined to comment on the cause of the
explosion.
The wreckage of a car was seen outside one building and there was early
speculation that the damage was consistent with that from a car bomb.
One radio journalist reported from the scene.
"I see that some windows of the government headquarters have been
broken.
"Some people covered with blood are lying in the street."
Norway has experienced problems with several homegrown terror plots linked to
al Qaeda.
Last week, a Norwegian prosecutor filed terror charges against an Iraqi-born
cleric for threatening Norwegian politicians with death if he was deported.

Hi Badboy........yes, the report I posted is from sky News and there are video clips which I don"t know how to include, hence the gaps.

the damage is really bad to the Government Buildings, they think it might be the recent case where they sentenced a guy to Jail and he threatened to
arrange Terrorist action if this was done.

Lethal Oslo Bombing: Who Are The Suspects?

5:04pm UK, Friday July 22, 2011
Although Scandinavian countries have reputations as liberal havens, there is
a long list of groups with grievances who could have carried out the lethal
bombing in the centre of Oslo.

Sky News security editor Sam Kiley pointed out that the target - offices of
the Government in the centre of town - made it likely that the bomber or bombers
were seeking to make a political point rather than kill the maximum number of
people.
"This was not an attack on something more vulnerable such as a
railway or a crowded shopping mall, this was an attack at the heart of the
Norwegian body politic," he said.
"It is clearly designed to send a very powerful political message."
He said groups including the Tamil Tigers and al Qaeda in the Arabian
Peninsula had cause to hold a grudge against Norwegian authorities.
Norway has also been very active in the Nato-led operation against Muammar
Gaddafi's forces in Libya, and has sent troops to fight the Taliban in
Afghanistan.
At home, Kiley said, authorities have - like those in Britain - been trying
to get immigrants to the country to conform more to the Norwegian way of life
amid concerns home-grown terrorists may pose a threat.

Two suspects are currently in a Norwegian jail awaiting charges relating to a
suspected al Qaeda-style terror plot.
Last week, a prosecutor there filed terror charges against an Iraqi-born
cleric for threatening Norwegian politicians with death if he is deported.
The indictment followed statements made by Mullah Krekar, the founder of
Kurdish Islamist group Ansar al Islam, to various news media outfits.
Kiley added that if it were proven that a car bomb or bombs had caused the
devastation it would point security services in the direction of those behind
it.
"A car bomb can deliver a very large amount of home-made explosive," he
said.
"You could probably get at least a tonne of high explosive in it and you also
have the secondary explosive of the fuel in the car.
"It can be an absolutely devastating weapon."

Man Held After 87 Killed In Norway Attacks

Post  AnnaEsse on Sat 23 Jul - 7:32

A 32-year-old Norwegian suspect has been arrested after at least 87 people were killed in two attacks in Norway

At least seven people died in Oslo after a huge car bomb exploded close to buildings which house the offices of Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg.

A further 80 were killed when a man dressed as a police officer opened fire on the island of Utoya where a youth meeting of the ruling Labour Party was taking place.

Previously, police had said that at least 10 had been killed on the holiday island but the death toll rose dramatically early this morning.

Police chief Oystein Maeland told a news conference: "We can't guarantee that won't increase", adding the attack had reached "catastrophic dimensions".

The suspect being held in connection with both attacks has been named in Norwegian television reports as Anders Behring Breivik.

Police are understood to have searched a flat in west Oslo where the man lived.

An anonymous police official said the suspect was arrested in Utoya and appears to have acted alone in the attacks.

He added he did not think the attacks were "linked to any international terrorist organisations" but seemed to be the work of a "madman".

Mr Stoltenberg said that Norway would gain strength from the attacks.

"We are a small country, but a very proud one," he said.

"Nobody can bomb us to be quiet. Nobody can shoot us to be quiet. Nobody can ever scare us from being Norway."

Sky's senior news correspondent Ian Woods is in Oslo and said that the island is around 20 miles from the capital.

He said that although police would not confirm whether other people were involved, it was possible the gunman had worked alone as there was a 90-minute gap between the two incidents.

Witnesses said the gunman moved across the small, wooded Utoya island firing at random as young people fled in fear.

They added the gunman might have had a pistol and an automatic weapon.

Jorgen Benone was on the island and said he saw people being shot by the man.

He said he saw people jumping into the water to try and save themselves, but he thought that "many lost their lives trying to escape".

"I was terrified for my life - I thought of all the people I love," he said.

The mayor of Oslo, Fabian Stang, said he would not have believed Norway could be attacked.

He said he wished he could have been on Utoya "to stand in front of the young people and ask the gunman to shoot me instead."

At least seven people were killed in the bombing outside the government buildings - with 10 seriously injured.

The blast shook the city centre, blowing out the windows of Mr Stoltenberg's offices and damaging the finance and oil ministry buildings.

'Terrified' Teen Escaped Norway Island Gunman

Post  AnnaEsse on Sat 23 Jul - 7:36

A survivor of the attack at a Norwegian youth camp has told how he was "terrified" as he hid behind rocks and saw others being shot.

Jorgen Benone said the group had just finished talking about what had happened in Oslo before sitting down to eat.

He said suddenly, they were aware of "panic" down by the water.

"People were wondering, what's happening?... Then people began understanding that people had been shot," he said.

"People started jumping out of windows, running everywhere, all directions - they were terrified for their life.

"Most people ran towards the water, hiding behind stones... They guy was dressed like a policeman.

"It was total chaos, people were jumping into the water trying to swim to the other side.

"I think several lost their lives that tried to get over to the mainland.

"People were hiding behind stones. Some were just sitting, all quiet. I saw people being shot.

"I tried to sit as quiet as possible behind a stone. I felt it was best not to move anywhere... not to run in the open because then he could see me.

"I saw him once - just 20-30 metres away from me. I thought, I'm terrified for my life.

"I thought about all the people I love and I just wanted to go home.

"I saw some boats, but I wasn't sure if I could trust them. I didn't know who I could trust anymore.

"But then I started waving and a boat came towards me and I just jumped into the water and swam to the boat, and I was crying, that's how happy I was.

"I'm just happy to be alive."

British Prime Minister David Cameron said he was outraged by the attacks.
"I have offered Britain's help, including through our close intelligence

US President Barack Obama also offered his condolences.
