Follow.Comedian Frankie Boyle has provoked outrage by making a "deeply offensive" comment about Madeleine McCann on Twitter.

The Scottish comic and television star tweeted the joke yesterday and immediately came under fire from some of his 1.05 million followers.

However, the missing Leicestershire youngster's parents, Kate and Gerry, of Rothley, were said to not want to dignify his comments by giving their views on the matter.

Their spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, said it was not the first time Boyle – who is on tour and is to release a DVD in November – had made remarks about their daughter.

Boyle made the comment about Madeleine, who went missing during a family holiday in Portugal in May 2007, after he had posted a series of tweets about the allegations of sexual abuse of children levelled against Sir Jimmy Savile in a television programme this week.

One of his Twitter followers responded: "Wow, that's pretty horrible even by your standards."

Another wrote: "This time he's really gone too far. Career-ending, I'd say – and not even a tiny bit funny."

However, one of the comedian's fans tweeted: "If you're thinking of unfollowing Frankie Boyle because he made a distasteful remark, why were you following him in the first place?"

MrMitchell said: "Frankie Boyle has made similarly deeply offensive comments about Madeleine in the past and the family will not dignify any of them by commenting."

On a previous occasion the comedian referred to Madeleine during a stage show in Liverpool – Mrs McCann's home town – reportedly leading a number of people to walk out of the theatre.

Leicester city councillor Patrick Kitterick, a former winner of the Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year, said: "There is a place for edgy comedy but this comment isn't edgy and it isn't funny."

Tom Franklin, of Kibworth, saw the tweet soon after it appeared yesterday morning.

Mr Franklin said: "I support the principle of freedom of speech, but this remark went well beyond what is acceptable.

"This is the kind of comedy which scapegoats people who cannot speak for themselves, either because of their circumstances or because they don't have the economic muscle that the Frankie Boyles of this world have."

Madeleine went missing in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007, sparking a worldwide search that continues.

The Mercury contacted Boyle's representatives, Chambers Management, but nobody was available to comment.

Its disgusting...jimmy saville is also mentioned...

But why do they drag clarrie out everytime
they feel affronted/abused or criticised?
Can they not speak for themselves?

It was an unnecessary comment (you can read it youself at https://twitter.com/frankieboyle) but it hardly warrants the length of the outrage article.

I saw the tweet. It was about Jimmy Savile being happy to go to heaven so he could [insert your own word here] Madeleine McCann. It was distasteful even for Frankie Boyle - who has never actually made nasty remarks about Madeleine before, but has made quite a few about the parents.

Just looked it up and I think it was an absolutely disgusting comment and I can see why there is outrage about it.

This is the new breed of comedian?
Who on earth would be entertained by that sort of filth?

The link provided by Chris doesn't exist now so I guess that the comment has been deleted due to the complaints.

I wonder what people find most offensive.The suggestion that peadophiles go to heaven,or the suggestion that Madeleine Mccann is dead ? Must ask the Pope about that one as those at the Vatican were very keen on jimmy and also the mccanns (for a little while at least).That the Roman Catholic Church should praise the work of peado's i find even more offensive than some cheap crack by a two bit comedian.
Say what you like about frankie boyle but i recon he's got the mccanns sussed.

I agree entirely Lioned, he's made many cracks in the past about the parents, particularly Gerry, but never Madeleine herself. What cracked me up is that last time he appeared in Leicester, he made a joke about the McCanns on stage and it was all over the Murky the very next day, complete with a page of "outrage" from people who hadn't even been at the gig. The Murky did, however, helpfully print the joke for anyone who might have missed it, so make of that what you will.

By commenting Clarence you ARE 'dignifying' them. Idiot.

Frankie Boyle is IMO a deeply unhappy person and l've just looked up that tweet and it's unforgivable. Clarrie and the Mcs had every right to be outraged but ffs say so, the way he's worded is far short on outrage than it should have been.

I do think there is a big chunk of irony in boyles sense of humour that is easily missed.

Looks like it has been deleted, that link is gone. I have never thought Frankie Boyle is funny, he is crude, but I quite liked his description of Boris....

I'm sure the comment has been removed because of the complaints; I doubt whether FB chose to do so himself. I find him about as funny as the Black Death myself but good luck to anyone who thinks otherwise.

I would be happy if there had been a similar outcry when that idiot Dara O'Briain called a female McCann sceptic the C word on Twitter.

What a surprise, the silence in response to that has been deafening!
