Madeleine: Brown quizzes Portuguese PM about bungled police inquiryBy VANESSA ALLEN and JAMES CHAPMAN
Last updated at 10:44 19 October 2007

Comments (0) Share Gordon Brown has raised concerns about the investigation into Madeleine McCann's disappearance with his Portuguese counterpart.

Mr Brown discussed the police inquiry with the premier Jose Socrates during private talks in Lisbon, where the pair are attending the EU summit.
Mr Brown said he wanted to be assured "that the police authorities are taking the actions that are necessary and there's proper cooperation between the British and Portuguese police".

Assurances: Gordon Brown met Portuguese premier Jose Socrates in private yesterday in Lisbon to discuss Madeleine McCann

The pair previously discussed the case in July, when Mr Socrates assured Mr Brown "everything possible" was being done to find the missing four-year-old.
Mr Brown's involvement in the case has sparked resentment in Portugal in the past.
One detective accused parents Gerry and Kate McCann of creating "constant interruptions and distractions" after it emerged they had been keeping him personally updated on developments over Madeleine, who went missing in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz on May 3.
The policeman said: "It is amazing to me that people in high positions are getting involved. I can't think of any case in Portugal where this has happened."
A source in the Portugese police admitted yesterday they have no evidence against the McCanns, who are still official suspects.
A high-ranking detective in the investigation told the Portuguese newspaper 24 Horas: "The truth is, nothing which allows us to make a definite accusation against the McCanns has yet emerged."
It also emerged yesterday that Mrs McCann is having haunting visions of Madeleine at night.
Her mother Susan Healey said: "She told me she was unable to sleep a couple of nights ago and I said, 'Did the twins wake you up?' She said, 'No, Madeleine came'."

Good morning Panda

The police did have evidence against the McCanns, evidence which came out of their own mouths, which was backed up by their friends. The evidence was that the McCanns admitted to the police, that they had left their children unsupervised in their unlocked apartment. This is one offence and the fact that Madeleine supposedly disappeared while the McCanns were out, made this offence more serious.

I know the police didn't believe Madeleine was abducted, but at the end of the day, they had the power to arrest them on what they told them. The fact they didn't is a grave mistake on their part. They could have arrested them and charged them with the offences they had admitted to, which would have enabled them to keep them in custody, while they made further investigations.

The evidence that the sniffer dogs found, could have been sent off to the laboratories and if the result came back inconclusive, then the McCanns could have been prosecuted for the offence of leaving their children unattended, which resulted in Madeleine's disappearance.

When this high ranking police officer, said there was no evidence against the McCanns, knowing full well well that they had broken the Portuguese law, it was a gross insult, for all of the Portuguese citizens. There is a law that states children must not be left unattended for any amount of time.

A Portuguese born poster who lived in the UK, who posted on a forum I was a member of, put information on the forum, which showed that a Portuguese citizen, was successfully prosecuted for leaving his baby in a pram, outside a Portuguese shop. No one can tell me that the McCanns children were in a safer place than the baby in the pram.

If I was a Portuguese citizen, who had been prosecuted for something that the McCanns had not been prosecuted for, I would have kicked up a fuss. If the Portuguese have a law that states children must not be left unattended for any amount of time, then the law should apply to everyone who commits the offence, not just Portuguese citizens.

I wonder if the McCanns would have been prosecuted, if they hadn't been matey with Gordon Brown.

Yes, it's true that the McCanns could have been charged with negligence carrying a 1 yr. Prison sentence, but I did read the Prosecutor was going for "neglect causing harm" which carries a 10 yr Prison sentence. It really is hard to seperate fact from fiction in this case. My guess is that the Portugese Police were overwhelmed by the appearance of the U.K.
Ambassador, Lawyers etc appearing in PDL , Press invasion on a scale never seen before, the McCanns organising the
Fund drawing more attention to Madeleine, engaging Metodo 3 which was supposed to be disallowed etc. I'm sure the
McCanns were advised about the neglect charges but stayed in PDL for months so must have felt confident they would
not be charged. The "arguido " status spooked them and they left in a hurry. Also, to have the British Prime Minister
discussing the case with Socrates is very unusual and Socrates should have chided him for interfering...I hope he did.!!

Hi fred, who are you talking about Socrates or Brown? I remember Brown was given a non paying job recently, can't
remember what it was. Didn,t think it meant a move to Paris.

Hi Keela, I read that Socrates owed Gordon Brown a favour, because Brown got him off the hook for something dodgy that Socrates was involved with in the UK.

If this is true, then it looks like justice for Madeleine, was sacrificed in favour of making sure her parents, who were the cause of her disappearance, were never prosecuted.

See what I mean about fact and fiction......I read ages ago that Socrates intervened in return for Gordon Brown signing
the EU treaty. Personally I find this hard to believe the McCanns more important than the EU????NAH

Hi Panda

The information which was put on the AOL board, was not the thoughts of the poster himself, it was a link. It wasn't the EU treaty it was something dodgy that Socrates was involved with in the UK.

However whether or not Socrates was involved with a dodgy deal isn't the issue, the issue is, the McCanns have walked away from a heinous crime they took part in. A crime that has resulted in Madeleine's disappearance and more than likely her death.

The McCanns should have been prosecuted for neglect and because Madeleine disappeared, because of their neglect, they would have got a lengthy prison sentence. Someone within the Portuguese Justice system, should grow a pair and bring this couple to justice. We can't rely on Scotland Yard doing this, because Scotland Yard are only assisting the PJ.

If the McCanns are prosecuted and found guilty, then all their assets should be sold to pay for this prosecution. If it is proved that someone within the British and Portuguese Governments, were instrumental in helping the McCanns escape justice, then they too should be stripped of their assets. It isn't right that the Portuguese taxpayers, who were lead a merry dance by the McCanns and their helpers, should pay for any prosecution that may occur.

Re: Gordon Brown interferes in Madeleine's disappearance.

Post  tigger on Fri 3 Aug - 21:13

But GB doesn't seem to have been a personal friend. As early as the Vanity Fair interview end of September 07, published on 8th of January (whole interview as Wintabells knows - is full of slip ups)
quote from VF:

Lately, word has leaked out that the McCanns feel abandoned even by Gordon Brown, once their close ally. Their spokesman doesn’t quite deny this. “That was one of our backers who said it. We would never be that impolitic,” he says. “But it is true that we have requested a meeting with the prime minister to show him the strength of our case, to explain Kate and Gerry’s innocence—and yet all we’ve been offered is a medium-level-consular meeting, which we rejected.” unquote

But only three days after the McCanns had fled back to the UK, GB paid a visit to Leicester Police. The tone of the above is interesting, considering Clarrie is speaking.
Whatever it was that made GB work so hard on behalf of the Mccs - doesn't look like friendship, despite Philomena telling us they were practically mates.
GB also took the trouble to phone John Mcc. early on in the proceedings. All very curious.

Yes tigger, there is much about this case that is hard to figure out. I read that Kate was more a friend of Gordon Brown's
wife, but there is a limit to what he would do to protect the McCanns. The one thing that could have proved damaging
to Tony Blair and Gordon has to be political, which brings me back to the 3a post from a Member saying Gerry was a Fund raiser for the Labour and some donations to the Party were from non resident Donors. This sounds feasible and
would explain how the McCanns knew so many influential people. Who organised the Family Lawyers and QC despatched
to PDL within a couple of days, Sheree Dodd , Control Risk etc? Certainly not the McCanns . Wasn't it Tony Blair who phoned John Buck asking him to go to PDL?

Hi LJC....yes they certainly knew a lot of people in high places, I would say Gerry and Kate living in Leicester were hardly
likely to mingle with the rich and famous ......so I stick to the Labour Party connection which on Fund raising events the
McCanns would have got to know these Politicians and their supporters.

Richard Branson is very rich and very famous. He put £100k into the fund early on and when the McCanns were made arguidos, he promised to pay for the best lawyers available to represent them if they were prosecuted.

Sir Philip Green is also rich and famous, he lent the McCanns his private plane plus a pilot, shortly after Madeleine disappeared.

Brian Kennedy, the double glazing magnet, is another rich and famous person, he paid for lawyers for the McCanns and until a year or so ago, he paid Clarence Mitchell's salary.

These are just 3 rich and famous people who helped the McCanns, that I can think of, off the top of my head. Then there are television presenters, such as Fiona Phillips and Lorraine Kelly banging the drum for the McCanns.

Brian Kennedy, Kate McCanns uncle, was speaking to the media, shortly before Kate and Gerry were made arguidos. He said that his niece and her husband, had access to people the ordinary members of the public didn't have. He said they would call in favours, if they were charged with offences relating to Madeleine's disappearance.

He also asked for donations, to help pay for the McCanns living expenses in Portugal and their bills which were mounting up in their Rothley home.

Anyone who doesn't believe that the McCanns mingled with the rich and famous, are totally wrong.

In fact anyone who believes the McCanns loved their children are totally wrong. I have just been watching a programme called "Soham - A Parent's Tale." Watching this programme really brought it home to me, that the McCanns had no love at all for Madeleine, Sean and Amelie. Holly's dad didn't wait until it was light to go and look for Holly, he went looking for her, when she was 15 minutes late coming home. Along with other people, he searched all night for Holly and Jessica.

It was foggy and it was raining and they couldn't see anything, but it didn't stop them searching. They shouted and banged things in the hope that the two little girls would hear them. The search for them didn't end that night either, people stayed off work to look for Holly and Jessica.

We all know what the McCanns did to find Madeleine, a big fat NOTHING. Why? Because they didn't give a stuff about her and neither did the ones who helped them evade justice.

Just because the McCanns say they love their children doesn't mean it's true. Their behaviour before and after Madeleine disappeared, is not the way parents who love their children behave.

Yup, one a Scouser, one a Glaswegian, and both living in Leicestershire, albeit it the leafy part of Leicestershire. They will definitely be Labour through and through. Champagne Socialists I feel. But whether the Labour party is so powerful it could actually influence the outcome of a criminal investigation into something so serious as child abduction/disappearance is another question. My opinion is no, but I feel GB tried to help to a point, for humanist reasons, until the tide started to turn and then he too turned away.

Were Goncalo Amaral and Chief Inspector Tavares de Almeida telling lies, when they said the British Government intervened with this case?

Was Goncalo Amaral telling lies, when he said " I remind you, that they demanded the archiving of the process, when they were still arguidos, in 2008, merely to defend their image. They're not interested in the reopening of the process, or of the investigation"?

The McCanns unlike Robert Murat, didn't have to adhere to the terms of their arguido status. Why him and not the McCanns." It was proved without a shadow of doubt, that he had nothing to do with Madeleine's disappearance. Even though many people still think he did.

The McCanns haven't committed a traffic offence, they've committed a series of neglectful crimes, which resulted in the disappearance of Madeleine. I know the PJ probably couldn't do anything about the times they left their children, on the nights previous to Madeleine's disappearance, but I believe they would have proceeded with charges, if the McCanns hadn't been canny enough to phone Gordon Brown.

I know Gordon Brown, didn't have the power to despatch the two British Special Envoys to help the McCanns, but Tony Blair did and I don't believe he did it because the McCanns were fund raisers for the Labour Party. People who have ploughed money into the 3 main political parties have committed crimes and had to face the music. So it's highly unlikely that the McCanns have escaped justice, because they are fund raisers for the Labour Party.

In my opinion, there is some other reason why the McCanns have escaped justice and it is something that both Governments, will do their best to make sure the reason is never brought out in public.

Just because the McCanns say they love their children doesn't mean it's true. Their behaviour before and after Madeleine disappeared, is not the way parents who love their children behave.

Hi kathybelle
quote,
Holly's dad didn't wait until it was light to go and look for Holly, he went looking for her, when she was 15 minutes late coming home. Along with other people, he searched all night for Holly and Jessica.

I was unable to watch this as hubby and son are watching the games, ggrrrr. Can you tell me if the McCanns were mentioned at all in this programme, I really hope their name wasn't breathed in the same programme as those two sweet girls.

Hi Bobsy

No. You can watch the programme on the "ITV Player." It really is worth watching.

He also asked for donations, to help pay for the McCanns living expenses in Portugal and their bills which were mounting up in their Rothley home."

The only time I saw Brian Kennedy interviewed was in Rothley and he said the fund would be used for Legal Expenses.
Are you sure Richard Branson actually donated to the fund,? he pledged £100,000 towards Legal Fees in the event the McCanns were charged, he didn't actually hand the cash over.

If Richard Branson and Philip Green , both multimillionaires, pledged money it could have been to get Kudos , everyone
was jumping on the bandwagon at the time, offering support to this attractive Professional couple who became World
famous because they had their very own PR guy.

[quote="LJC"]Yup, one a Scouser, one a Glaswegian, and both living in Leicestershire, albeit it the leafy part of Leicestershire. They will definitely be Labour through and through. Champagne Socialists I feel. But whether the Labour party is so powerful it could actually influence the outcome of a criminal investigation into something so serious as child abduction/disappearance is another question. My opinion is no, but I feel GB tried to help to a point, for humanist reasons, until the tide started to turn and then he too turned away.[/quote

I don't think any of these "Friends" would have gone out of their way to support the McCanns if they thought they were guilty of accidental homicide . All they knew was what the McCanns and their PR told the Press, the Portugese were lazy, not doing anything to search for Madeleine etc etc.

Thank the Lord, that the name McCann didn't sully the name of these two families. Thank you for the link Not Born Yesterday but it will not allow me to view as I am out of the UK. But I shall rest easy that there was no bandwaggoning. I am sure that isn't a word but it'll do.

I can't swear that Richard Branson put 100k into a fighting fund, I only read that he did so. Hower I did hear him say that if the McCanns were brought to justice he would pay for the best lawyers to represent the them. I don't know if Sir Philip Green put money into the fighting fund, but he did lend the McCanns his private plane and pilot shortly after Madeleine disappeared.

Brian Kennedy the double glazing Magnet, was paying for the lawyers the McCanns were using as well as Clarence Mitchell's salary. He is no longer paying Clarence Mitchell's salary, but I don't know if he gave the McCanns money, a year or so ago, when a media report said they were going to ask him for some, because the fund was in dire straits.

The interview you are speaking about regarding Kate's Uncle Brian Kennedy, asking for money for legal fees, is a separate one to the interview he made to the media, outside the McCanns home. The interview you are speaking about is the one where both Brian Kennedy and Eileen McCann were interviewed. The interview I am speaking about, was when Kennedy was stood outside the McCanns house, he was asked if the McCanns were coming home and he said no. It was this that prompted Kennedy to ask for donations which would be used to pay for the McCanns living expenses in Portugal and their bills that were mounting up in their Rothley home.

I thought he had a nerve asking people for money to pay for the McCanns expenses in Portugal and the UK. I also thought he had a nerve asking for money to pay for the McCanns legal expenses, when he was interviewed with Eileen McCann. In this interview, Eileen McCann said her son was feeling better, now the fund was set up. Or words to that effect.
