Maddie: Hunt for 6 Brit cleaners
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/4842474/New-Madeleine-McCann-lead-as-police-hunt-for-six-Brit-cleaners.html
Missing ... Madeleine McCann
Cops' new lead
COPS investigating the Madeleine McCann case are trying to trace six British cleaners working in Portugal when she disappeared.

The group were based in Praia da Luz when Madeleine, then just three, vanished from her family’s holiday complex in 2007.

A property owner has told how cops probing the disappearance asked four times about the cleaners.

New lead ... Madeleine
Officers became aware of the six to eight Brit workers — who are said to have used a white van — after poring through evidence amassed during the original Portuguese investigation.

They are now asking for information about the group from owners whose properties overlook the Praia da Luz apartment where Madeleine stayed.

It is the first time the cleaners have been mentioned during any investigations into the three-year old’s disappearance.

The current inquiry — codename Operation Grange — is reviewing all evidence and leads thrown up by the original probe.

Portuguese police are said to have spoken to all nearby apartment owners about who was present on May 3, 2007, when Madeleine vanished while on holiday with parents Gerry and Kate.

Now Scotland Yard cops are going back to review witnesses and statements in the case.

Campaign ... Maddie's parents
One property owner showed The Sun a letter from the force, which says officers are checking who was in flats at the time.

When he rang the cops, he said he was asked repeatedly about the cleaners, who he believes were six to eight men or women.

The owner said: “The officer said it had been drawn to their attention there were British people that cleaned the apartments who they needed to speak to.

“They said, ‘Who are the British cleaners that are cleaning the apartments in a white van’?

“They wanted to know if I knew anybody that does cleaning out there. They asked about it four times. Mostly the cleaners that do the Ocean Club apartments where the McCanns were staying are Portuguese.

“But they were keen to know if I knew anybody that worked for a cleaning firm out there. They were very interested in who’d have access to those apartments.”

Lead ... white van
The owner added: “The apartments where the McCanns were staying have their own cleaners provided by the Ocean Club. But some don’t want to pay their prices and get others to come in.

“Any British cleaners would not be on contract, they’d be brought in. They have adverts in the supermarkets and some of the private apartments use them because they’re cheaper.

“Where the McCanns were — or near where they were — may well have had someone who used them. I think people should be aware cops want to speak to these people. Me speaking out might help others that know them to come forward.”

A source said: “This seems to be a completely new line of inquiry. There is no mention of a group of British cleaners using a white van in the original Portuguese police files which have been made public so far.

“It would seem that this is something that has been brought to the attention of the police by someone they have interviewed during their investigation.”

Complex ... where family stayed
Operation Grange was set up by PM David Cameron following pleas from Madeleine’s family, who live in Rothley, Leics.

A Met Police spokesman said speaking to individuals was part of its review, adding: “Officers are reviewing all of the material in relation to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann. This is routine procedure as part of the ongoing review.”

Mystery vehicle
WITNESSES have mentioned a white van before in the Madeleine case — most recently in 2010.

Carlos Moreira, 65, said he saw her lying in the back of a van near the spot where she vanished.

He told investigators he had seen a couple who looked like gypsies near the vehicle.

Earlier there were reports to the original Portuguese police probe of a young dark-haired man acting suspiciously beside a white van just before Madeleine disappeared.

The man, with deep-set eyes, was reportedly seen staring intently at the apartment where the McCann family were staying.

For me the most significant thing about this is that it says Scotland yard are currently reviewing all the witness statements! This is a very nice way to open up the channels of communication with the rest of the tapas.

Hey, something big must be on the horizon elsewhere - the Scum has thrown in all the bells and whistles on this one.
We even get a picture of A Policeman Searching and (gasp!) A White Van!!!

But there's only one SY quote, which is general and does not refer to this Jackanory story at all.
Plenty of guff though from the 'property owner' - but as with many McFairytales of late, the Scum is too coy to mention his name. And the lack of a name makes this tripe even less credible than it already is.

We do however have 'a source' - COOEE! MORNING CLARRIE! - who puts on his *innocent face* and pretends not to know where the 'story' came from 'cos it's not in the available files.

Utter bollox from start to finish.
NEXT!!!

A thought just occurs ... the Cyprus 'sighting' involved a girl seen with a British couple.

And now it seems the hunt is on for six British cleaners ...

Could it be that Team McCann are desperate to avoid accusing or offending anyone Portuguese at the moment? There might just be a good reason for that, possibly re events this 'story' is trying to distract people from?

unquote

This one was easily solved. It's in the files. The man was a Brit, shopping at the local supermarket. He always parked his van there and the PJ interviewed him.
It's in the files, esteemed journos! The cut and paste school of journalism is plumbing new depths every time I look.

Unusual for the Sun to be allowing comments both for and against. This is a good one:

Surly this has gone on long enough ,the question is where were the parents at the time she is alleged to have been abducted ,and why have their friends not been questioned properly .

These people are still here so why are they not in the frame instead of people who are long gone and may have not even existed .

Speaking as a parent who has lost a young person the reactions of these parents seem very suspect to me and there are many people with the same feelings .

What Cameron is doing sticking his nose in is amazing there are loads of people disappearing each year why this case is it because they and their friends are so called professional people and therefore cannot be investigated because of this ,

It's in the Daily Mail

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2293759/Madeleine-McCann-hunt-Operation-Grange-officers-look-cleaners-white-van.html

New lead in hunt for Madeleine McCann: Police look for team of British cleaners in white van who were working in resort

* Apartment owners have been asked about six to eight cleaners with van
* Cleaners advertised on cards in Portuguese supermarkets nearby
* New line of enquiry comes as UK detectives review missing girl's case

By Harriet Arkell

PUBLISHED: 09:43, 15 March 2013 | UPDATED: 10:13, 15 March 2013

Detectives investigating the disappearance of British toddler Madeleine McCann believe a team of British cleaners may hold the key to her whereabouts.

Owners of apartments in the Portuguese holiday complex where Maddie and her family were staying when she vanished in 2007 have been asked about cleaners in the area who had a white van.

One property owner said police told him they are looking for a group of six to eight British cleaners who drove around the Praia da Luz area in a white van, working in holiday apartments.

t is the first time the cleaning team has been been mentioned since the hunt for missing Maddie, who was three when she went missing on a family holiday to Portgual, began.

The new line of inquiry came from British officers reviewing all the evidence as part of Operation Grange.

Detectives working to establish who was in the Praia da Luz holiday apartments at the time have asked property owners repeatedly if they had seen a team of British cleaners working there.

One apartment owner called police after he received a letter from them saying they were checking who was in the flats at the time.

He told The Sun: 'The officer said it had been drawn to their attention there were British people that cleaned the apartments who they needed to speak to.

'They said "Who are the British cleaners that are cleaning the apartments in a white van?"'

'They were very interested in who'd have access to those apartments.'

The owner said police asked him about the cleaners four times, and led him to believe that they were looking for six to eight British men or women

He said that usually the Ocean Club resort's own cleaners worked in the apartments, but several property owners used cheaper British cleaners, who advertised on cards in the local supermarkets.

The new lead is not believed to have come from Portuguese police, but possibly from information gathered during interviews conducted by British police.

A white van has been mentioned in connection with Madeleine's disappearance before, but this is the first time a team of British cleaners has come up.

Three years ago a Portuguese man told police he'd seen a girl he believed to be the missing three-year-old in the back of a white van near her holiday resort.

He said there were a couple of people whom he believed to be gypsies by the van.

A separate report to Portuguese police mentioned a white van and a young, dark-haired man, who was staring at the holiday apartments the McCanns had been staying in.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman told MailOnline: 'Officers are reviewing all of the material in relation to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

'This is routine procedure as part of the ongoing review.'

Operation Grange was set up by the Metropolitan Police two years ago at the request of Prime Minister David Cameron following a plea by Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry, of Rothley, Leicestershire.

In May it will be six years since Madeleine disappeared from the Portuguese holiday resort.

If you really think "its terrible" for every family who loses a child - why are you questioning why this family gets so much "airtime" as you put it. And your comparison to them getting as much publicity as Jordan really highlights your understanding of how "terrible" their situation is. you should chat to afro_nath91 and both of you can maybe come to a conclusion as to how to stop these parents, whose children are missing, from "milking it" and to get them less "airtime".

This story broke my heart and still does to this day. I think after everything we've read since she disappeared its fairly obvious that poor Maddie was targeted. There were two other children in that apartment that would have been easier to kipnap and less recognisable. Somebody does not break into an apartment to burgle and end up taking a child. Whoever took her was watching the apartment and took their chance. The children should never have been left alone. I prey that this does not come to a tragic conclusion but realistically whatever her fate, weather she alive or not, i fear for her. Poor sweetheart x

boshboy1 I suppose you are implying that by leaving their children alone they deserve what they are going through now?
Even as a parent yourself - your main concern is to highlight your obviously superiour parenting skills ("we always had a baby sitter - even if my parents were next door") rather than the devastating loss of their beautiful little child.

"while they were drinking alcohol their kid is being taking away" sic.

Are we to conclude that there is a direct correlation between "drinking alcohol" and predatory, sick, child kidnapping, inhumans suddenly appearing in your vicinity? As they are making their way into your private apartment with the sole intention of taking your child away - for whatever purpose they may have - boshboy1 is saying its all your fault.
Has anyone done any research on how many children were abducted whilst their parents were NOT drinking alcohol?

How can anyone, especially a parent - focus on parents- to blame in a situation like this is incredible to me. I would rather be dead than suffer her pain - and by the way boshboy1 and all your like - dont think there is even a second in the day when she is not blaming herself. she doesnt need cruel heartless people like you to point out where she went wrong.

I can't believe she has not been after all the coverage, it's such a shame. I have read in the past many comments on this case from pious holier than thou people who have never ever let their children out of their sight, never been late collecting them from school or extra-mural classes. I also so take exception to the fact that many condemn them as having special priviledges because of their profession and hence being middle-class. The McCanns are ordinary people who worked hard and earned their right to practice as doctors, they are also tenacious people who, unlike most apapthatic, complacent armchair critics have not sat back, but put in every effort to trace the child. Hindsight is a wonderful attribute and expect that they are castigating themselves everyday for leaving the children to go a hundred metres to a cafe.

Gerry and Kate are the ones that have to live with the 'what ifs' every single day of their lives, who are you people to sit in judgement??! There are NO perfect parents out there much as you seem to think that that is you, we all learn as we go along and all make mistakes no matter how hard we try try not to! they have to live with what they did which in all honesty is not something i could do but there are alot of parents that do & have, but luckily they got away with it and they weren't picked by some EVIL EVIL people/person to be put through the unimaginable pain that the McCanns have had to go through! Lets concentrate on keeping this is the headlines (like you said lybdlv instead of the mind numbing stories of the jordans, katonas etc) until HOPEFULLY one day we can get a happy ending!

Re-reading the article it is clear it's just speculation. It clearly says the apartment owner used the ocean club cleaners. therefore we can assume this group of cleaners did not have access, but what would it matter if they did, they didn't need access, the door was left unlocked. Anyone had access.

I hope one day she will be found alive and well and the filth that are responsible for this disgusting crime will be put away for life because that is the sentence they have placed on the parents of this little girl and for all you damn perfect parents that blame the McCann's,go and give your own Child a hug and imagine what it would feel like being without them, not knowing if they are alive or dead, constantly going over and over in your head with-what if's,the guilt must still be horrendous for them, no one can ever take that away from them and yet it is something that we as parents do, day in day out -make judgmental mistakes, fortunately,we get away with them.

I would gladly give to raise a £1million reward leading to finding Madeline, this may loosen some tongues now after all this time. I know more money is needed to help the investigation but can the Sun or another paper not help raise the reward by asking readers to donate? It's torturous for this family and some views on this forum just show how self righteous and the true nature of people that is irrelevant to finding her

I hate to say it, but everytime I read a 'new' story about this poor girl. I feel just as frustrated as her parents and the parents of Ben Needham before her, clinging on to hope can leave you feeling hopeless :(

pentonboy I think you are wrong. Every parent makes mistakes and unfortunately this one has cost them their child and they are having to live with this. That is a punishment in itself. I am sure they are not bad parents and have done what so many parents have done before. I feel sorry for them and hope they will find her dead or a live so they can finaly put this to rest.

Every story I read about Madeline feels like false hope. I pray they find this beautiful little girl but personally I think there was so many errors in the original investigation and they say the first 72 hours are crucial that it will be almost impossible to find her.
I to believe Madeline was targeted by professional kidnappers and her parents will live with the guilt for the remainder of their lives. I don't like her parents if I'm honest, there is just something about them both. I remember Kate washing cuddle cat which I thought was very strange.
However, my personal opinion doesn't count with regards to the parents, I hope and pray they do find Madeline, sooner rather than later

I really do hope and pray that Madeline is found one day but the sceptic in me thinks that unfortunately, she is long gone. There has been far too much media coverage over the last six years that if whoever took her has not gotten rid of her then they are daft and the police clearly aren't very good at their job. I don't think there is a single person who wouldn't be happy to hear that she had been found but IF she is still alive, there are 7 billion people on this planet and the chances of finding her are very remote. I know it must be hard for the parents to move on as I am sure they either just want to find her alive or lay her to rest but I really think they need to try and get on with the rest of their lives. I do agree that if it wasn't for their actions then she could still be here. Who in their right mind would leave young children, alone in a room in a foreign country? It doesn't matter whether it was the first, second or third time they had done it - You don't leave little kids alone and Madeline's siblings were even younger than she was!

"It is the first time the cleaners have been mentioned during any investigations into the three-year old’s disappearance."
I'm not sure if this is correct. As I recall it, there was a mention of the cleanrers before, and that in fact one of them had been sacked.

Before some of you have a go at me - Of course I'm not saying I was a perfect parent, nobody in their right mind would claim to be but I do know one thing for sure - I NEVER but NEVER left my daughter alone while I went our drinking, or went out at all actually. I can't imagine how often the McCanns think of that, it must haunt them every day. This is why they can't let this rest and go on with their lives, they know deep down they're culpable. Can you imagine the blame they must have thrown at each other over who's idea it was? Their life must be a living hell. medion2010 - It was every night btw, they'd been doing it since they arrived.

Its a reminder that anything can happen when you turn your eye away from your child. I was nearly stolen myself when i was very young. I have very faint picture of it but it could have been worse. My parents were not even 20 yards away when it happened. So its wrong to point blame at parents. What i do not know is how truthful Maddie's parents were about how they left their children. The normal thing is to look as if they were not irresponsible otherwise they could face the law as well. But again, you don't want this to happen to anyone regardless.

I had a dream the other night that my 2 year old boy had gone missing. It haunted me all day after I had woken up and the day after, and today. I can't even imagine what these parents have been going through these past few years. How strong they must be to be able to keep going for the sake of the twins. Yes they left her alone, but its the people that TOOK HER that are fully to blame. If they had used the babysitting service available it was basically a check-in-on-the-kids-service every 20 minutes, something this party of people were doing instead. When holidaying abroad I have not once taken my eyes off of my children, they made a mistake and are paying for it every minute of every day, haven't they had enough grief?

Thanks Annabel and chrissie!
This 'story' is being planted everywhere now - something is afoot ...

I would hate to think that some entirely innocent, hardworking group of cleaners is now going to be homed in on and grilled just because they were in a certain place at a certain time and travelled in a white van.
There has been too much intrusion into people's lives in this saga already - they should be left to get on with their mopping, sweeping and polishing in peace.

Meanwhile, if the Met want to investigate a really dodgy bunch of old scrubbers, I'm sure we could point them in the right direction ......

Curiouser and curiouser ...

So if I'm understanding this correctly, instead of just quietly dropping the story (which they could have easily done, citing change of news priorities if queried about it), they wanted their audience to know why it had been dropped?

It's interesting to read down the comments as the organized PR followers kick in. The level of comments then deteriorates into the kind of primitive name calling we've become used to. The TM machine is still functioning then - working flat out to win over public opinion - treating it like some kind of reality TV show.
