The body of a 8 years old girl, who died a month ago but whose parents had invented a scenario of abduction, was found on Friday by the French gendarmerie at Le Mans after 24 hours of research, according to a judicial source.

The father confessed in police custody having invented the story of abduction, said the prosecutor Joelle Rieutort.

"He confessed after the police pointed contradictions" and "fairly quickly said the abduction was a fake" she said to reporters.

Both parents were placed in custody.

The body of the little girl was found after her father's confession in a container in a warehouse belonging to the company where he works.

In custody, he ensured that the girl died in the first days of August of "natural death", he said his body had been kept in a freezer at the couple's previous home, says Ms. Rieutort.

"The autopsy will be conducted as soon as possible. There are no apparent signs of violence," she said.

The father alerted police Wednesday on the alleged disappearance of the girl. He claimed that he briefly left the child alone, asleep in his car on a fast food restaurant parking, just the time to pick up food with his 10 years old son.

Nearly 150 policemen were mobilized on Thursday and have been looking for the little girl.

Who will this story 'give new hope to', I wonder? Bet the McCannics won't be rushing to cream all over this news item.

If it even makes it on to the Brit news, of course. Which it probably won't, with the excuse that "the nature of the story would only fuel hurtful and libellous thoughts" about a well-known famous and innocent family.

Parents who claimed daughter was kidnapped are charged with her murder

French social services came under fire today over their failure to save an eight-year-old girl whose parents allegedly beat her to death before hiding her body in a trunk full of cement.

France has been shocked by the torment inflicted on Marina Sabatier, whose body was found in a storeroom near Le Mans three days after Eric Sabatier, her father, reported that she had been abducted from his car as he bought their lunch.



Her apparent kidnapping made national headlines until Friday, when Sabatier, 37, and Virginie Darras, 30, his partner, told police that they had found Marina dead six weeks earlier and, in a panic, had hidden her body. On Saturday, they confessed to beating her and were charged with murder, abduction, violence against a minor and other offences.

Anger was added to shock when it emerged that two primary schools that Marina attended over the past year had alerted social services to her battered condition but investigations had been dropped.

Teachers reported that the girl, who had four half brothers and sisters, had suffered cuts and bruises. They also suspected that she was not being fed because she came to school with no snacks and finished the food on the plates of other children.

"We have the feeling that we served no purpose," said Jean-Luc Dubois, headmaster at the Coulans-sur-Gée primary school, who reported the girl's plight last April. "We had been vigilant since the beginning because we knew that she had been the object of a report from a neighbouring village."

The state prefect of the Sarthe department has ordered an inquiry into the apparent breakdown that led to the girl's death.

Local officials put down the failure to the family's frequent changes of address. They had moved house five times in two years, staying ahead of the social services. After the first complaint, in autumn last year, social workers accepted explanations from the family that Marina's wounds had been caused by a fall.

The couple, who have four other children from previous partners, moved to another village two weeks after Mr Dubois reported his school's suspicions last spring.

The case is the latest of several over the past two years which have exposed the authorities' failure to detect severe child abuse in apparently respectable French families. The Sabatiers' home villages, near the prosperous Loire valley, are far from the lawless urban ghettos that France usually associates with social breakdown.

Earlier this year, in the southern town of Millau, a seven-year-old boy was released from a house where he had been locked up in secret since he was born.

Roland Coutanceau, a psychiatrist and president of the French Mental Health Association, said that social services were under pressure to give parents the benefit of the doubt when they examined children with signs of abuse. "A bruise on the body of a child does not necessarily prove immediately that it is suffering ill treatment," he said.

Sabatier, who works for a removal firm, and his partner admitted beating Marina "in an especially brutal manner", said Chantal Moulin-Bernard, the prosecutor handling the case. The father had explained that they couple beat her because she was "greedy" and "always asking for food".

They locked Marina in a cellar one night and found her inanimate in the morning, she said.

They hid the body in a deep freeze at another site before putting it in a trunk and filling it with cement last week. When the other children asked where Marina was, they told them that she was on holiday at the seaside, the prosecutor said.

The couple face a maximum term of life imprisonment if they are convicted.
