MADELEINE'S PARENTS CALL ATTENTION TO HER DEATH

At the end of May, my wife Sofia visits me at the offices of the Department of Criminal Investigation in Portimão. She brings a flower basket filled with orchids, roses, lilies, and gerberas, decorated with butterflies and birds in shades of green and yellow, the two colours symbolising the mobilisation around Madeleine. A little note from my daughters accompanies it: "Papa, we love you, don't forget about us, but find Madeleine. Rita and Inès." That bouquet stayed in my office, withering as the days went by and the hope of finding Madeleine alive dwindled.

It is at this time that, suddenly, the parents seem to admit the possibility of their daughter's death. Afterwards - and to this day, if I am not mistaken -, they take exception to this hypothesis. Perhaps we were being naive, but it had seemed to us that Kate was going to provide us, indirectly, with indications about where her daughter's body was to be found. Thus, at the beginning of June, she informed us that the body could have been hidden in the outlet of a sewer pipe at Praia da Luz, or on the cliffs to the west of the beach, where she happened to run. She will say later that this information had been given to her by mediums possessing psychic power.

IN SEARCH OF A BODY, WITH KRUGEL'S MACHINE

Kate heard of a man called Krugel, a former South African army colonel, who had allegedly perfected a machine enabling him to detect the presence of a body. A decomposing body emits particles: if hair from the deceased person is placed in the machine, it detects identical particles. On June 9th, Kate asks friends to go to her home in England to collect some of her daughter's hair and send it to Krugel.

On June 28th, the McCanns request Krugel's presence in the Algarve. They want to make his intervention official and seek the agreement of the PJ. Thanks to Madeleine's hair, the South African allegedly determined a sort of imaginary line that allowed him to state that the body was in the Vila da Luz area. The Portuguese and English police learn, with amazement, about these supposed cutting-edge technologies dedicated to locating bodies. Of course, we knew that such apparatus existed, especially in the United States, but Krugel's mysterious, "machine," leaves us all speechless. Kate and Gerry, they stick to their guns. They saw a television programme in which the effectiveness of Krugel's method was demonstrated, and so are persuaded that the man will be able to move the investigation forward. Without being convinced as to the validity of the method, the police end up acceding to their request.

The show is about to begin.

At customs - in South Africa as well as in Portugal -, Krugal refuses to allow his machine to be submitted to security control: it must be neither x-rayed nor opened. He claims that this would damage it and that his production secret risked being unveiled. Finally, after long hours of negotiation, the man, his apparatus and the journalist accompanying them take off for the Algarve. It's now the middle of July. In late afternoon, they are driven to the Department of Criminal Investigation in Portimão, where a PJ team of investigators is waiting for them. They suggest that we watch a video about this famous invention - produced by the woman accompanying him - so that we can judge for ourselves. We are still not convinced. The following day, a few inspectors accompany Krugel to Praia da Luz for him to officiate.

Operations progress in the following manner.

1) Krugel climbs to the highest point west of Praia da Luz, places a hair into the machine and traces an imaginary line in an easterly direction.
2) He repeats the operation to the north of Praia da Luz and traces another line towards the south.
3) He then determines the point of intersection of these two lines.
4) From this point, he defines a corridor about 300 metres wide, bound by the cliffs on the right and the Roman Baths on the left.

The inventor then states: "Madeleine's body is in this area." The National Guard - who had already combed this area after the disappearance - conduct more searches. Once again, to no avail. As bothered when he left as when he arrived, Krugel goes back to South Africa, taking machine and journalist with him.

Can the erm, 'abductor' climb a window and erm 'abduct' that nutcase? Please? Pretty please?

Claudia, please don't be silly, the abductor cannot just climb in the window. This needs to be a special abductor who can silently lift a security shutter without any forensic trace being left and then climb in a window without touching it otherwise again he would leave forensic traces and scrapes in the lichen. In short he needs to be a supernatural abductor, very special indeed, just ask The Lady Kate, she will confirm. He also needs to be able to just put Kate's fingerprint on the inside of the window after he has been about his supernatural activities.

South Africa's manhunt expert, who has travelled to Portugal to trace missing Madeleine McCann, says that the possibility that she is still alive "is very slim".

And in a heartbreaking development her parents have accepted that she is probably dead, their official spokesperson admitted for the first time on Wednesday.

Clarence Mitchell, speaking for the family, said: "Kate and Gerry are realistic enough to know that there is a probability she is dead, but they have not given up hope that she is still alive and is being looked after somewhere."

It has also emerged that Danie Krugel, the former policeman whose special invention has been used to try to track missing people, visited Portugal in an attempt to find Madeleine. Madeleine, who is now four years old, disappeared while she slept in the room of a hotel complex in Praia da Luz with her younger twins on May 3. Their parents were dining at a restaurant nearby.

Krugel's invention featured on Carte Blanche and was used to try to trace what is believed to be the remains of the six school girls who died at the hands of infamous paedophile Gert van Rooyen, back in the 1980s.

Krugel - he has been dubbed The Locator - flew to Portugal to assist in the search for Madeleine. He carried out searches at night during his four-day visit to the country so as not to alert the media.

Krugel's invention is called a Matter Orientation System and uses a small sample of DNA and "like" material in this case a strand of Madeleine's hair to geographically pinpoint remains.

The technology claims it can find missing people, dead or alive but has met with scepticism in scientific and technological circles.

While the exact details of how it works remain a closely-guarded secret, a global positioning system is known to help define the search.

Krugel offered his expertise to Madeleine's parents, but he was only called in with the knowledge of the Portuguese police two months after she vanished.

Krugel tracked a 15-minute forensic route that he believed the kidnapper took. It wound through alleywayss and down to a nearby beach, where the trail went cold, according to Britain's News of the World.

This has convinced Madeleine's parents that their daughter was taken alive and gives them hope that she can still be found.

Krugel has given the police a map and says that the area where his investigation led him was a difficult one to search.

At his suggestion, the police brought in sniffer dogs. Krugel says he does not want to alert anyone who might disturb the scene.

All he can say is that "Madeleine is still there (in the holiday resort), nowhere else".

A source close to the McCann family said that Krugel's work, which had brought hope to them, should not be underestimated.

Krugel had a proven record of finding people and his methods were extremely credible, while the results matched many other strands of the investigation.

Krugel, meanwhile, is back home in Bloemfontein and working with scientists who are testing the invention, he said.

Mitchell on Wednesday said that a computer used by Gerry had reportedly been seized by Portuguese police, but insists it would be of no use to detectives.

Mitchell said the computer that was taken was "gathering dust" in the family's holiday apartment.

When the couple returned to Britain, they left the computer in the apartment, he said.

While the search for Madeleine had involved 100 police at the height of the investigation, the team has since been reduced to six people.

The parents were named formal suspects on September 7 and have since returned to Britain from Portugal.

According to the McCann family, Portuguese police suspect Kate may have accidentally killed Madeleine. The couple have strongly denied any involvement.

Danie was in Portugal during July 2007. As from the second day of her disappearance they have made every attempt to assist in the search for her. Not to jeopardize the investigation in any way Danie requested the McCanns and the police not to reveal his involvement until the conclusion of the investigation. Danie provided a full report with detailed maps of her location for searching. It was subsequently provided to the McCanns and Police.

After five months of fruitless efforts to find Madeleine, despite detailed information given by me to all relevant parties, I have now decided to publish this information so that any member of the public who is willing and able to assist in the search for Madeleine may have access to the very same information I have been providing to the parties involved since July 2007.

I know that even if she was moved after July 2007, there will still be evidence of her presence in this area.

I have done my very best, and believe my findings are correct.

My heart goes out to all who knew and love her.
