Lorraine Kelly is being given a stand-alone live daytime show as part of ITV’s overhaul of its breakfast strand GMTV.
The commercial broadcaster has already poached Adrian Chiles from the BBC to anchor its morning coverage, in a bid to bring viewers in and offer more serious programming.
Now it is understood that ITV bosses have decided to give Miss Kelly, 50, her own live daily show, which will be completely separate from the GMTV programming.
New show: Lorraine Kelly, pictured last week, will get a new stand-alone programme separate from the GMTV show
It is expected to air at a similar time as her existing LK Today show but will be completely rebranded.
Chiles will join GMTV in the autumn and executives are still to confirm who will join him on the sofa.
The future of Kate Garraway and Emma Crosby is still in doubt after it emerged ITV had secretly screen tested newsreader Helen Fospero to work with Chiles.
New face: Adrian Chiles has defected from BBC to the GMTV sofa
It is understood a senior figure on The One Show, Paul Connolly, has also quit the BBC to work with Chiles on GMTV.
Miss Kelly, 50, is one of ITV’s most popular presenters and the move to make her show separate from the rest of the morning shows is understood to be part of wider strategy to boost GMTV after years of criticism that it had dumbed down.
ITV executives have grown frustrated with GMTV’s poor ratings performance and the continued success of BBC.
Fed up viewers have been deserting 'dumbed down' GMTV in favour of more serious news shows.
In a bid to counter plunging ratings the broadcaster has brought in ITN man Ian Rumsey to edit the programme.
He is Miss Garraway’s ex-husband – the pair initially had a bitter break up but friends insist relations between them are now amicable.
She is now married to former Labour spin doctor Derek Draper, with whom she has two children.
Mr Rumsey replaces Martin Frizell, who is former GMTV presenter Fiona Phillips husband.
Alison Sharman, director of daytime, factual and GMTV said: ‘This is another crucial step in our ambition to create a groundbreaking ITV breakfast programme.
This is an incredibly exciting time for GMTV. Adrian Chiles is joining the team, we're investing in fantastic new facilities by moving to a brand new HD studio.’
