Mum dies saving son
Mum dies saving son from sea in Italy. Quite heroic, but by the same token what the Hell were they doing on a jetty in a storm, does no one have any common sense any more.

Aussie man in court over Facebook murder
Sydney Morning Herald
"The man accused of killing an 18-year-old Sydney girl he befriended on
Facebook will stay in custody as investigators continue to sift through
his computer files.
Christopher James Dannevig, 20, appeared via video link at Campbelltown
Local Court this morning, charged with murder in connection with the
death of Nona Belomesof.
More than a dozen members of the teenager's family packed into the court
to watch the brief proceedings.
Ms Belomesoff's body was found in a Campbelltown creek bed last Friday
night.
Police allege Mr Dannevig lured her into meeting him on the pretence
they would be attending a training camp to work for wildlife group WIRES.
The pair are believed to have first met on online dating site Oasis
Active and continued to talk via Facebook.
Mr Dannevig was arrested on Friday night and charged with murder.
His lawyer made no application for bail at today's hearing but was
granted leave to make one before the matter is due to before court again
on July 28.
Prosecutors told the court they would spend the next 10 weeks sifting
through medical and scientific evidence as well as computer files."

Ex-police officer in Chicago goes on trial for lying about torture.
Jury selection begins today.
"CHICAGO -
A pool of 90 potential jurors will begin to be whittled
down to 12 today as jury selection begins for the trial of former
Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge, accused of lying about alleged abuse
and torture of suspects.
Burge, now 62, served as a detective and a District Commander when the
alleged torturing of suspects took place.
The torture allegations span from 1972 to 1991 in which more than 200
suspects were reportedly forced to confess to crimes under
investigation. Burge was suspended from the Chicago Police Department
in 1991 and in 1993 he was fired when the Police Department Review Board
ruled that he had used torture. Burge was accused of lying when he
denied in a civil lawsuit that he and other police detectives had
tortured anyone.
The potential jurors were given lengthy questionaires earlier in May
asking about their ability to fairly judge Burge. Attorneys for the
former police commander had argued for a change of venue, telling a
judge that Burge could not receive a fair trial in Chicago. A motion
filed last week argued that a planned rally this morning would prejudice
the jury pool against Burge.
The judge has already ruled out previous motions to move the location of
the trial, but hasn't yet ruled out this one. She has summoned
attorneys for both sides this morning before summoning potential jurors.
Some of the accusations against Burge is that he and his men used
electric shocks, beatings, choking, and other torture techniques to make
criminal suspects confess, and the issues have been raised in many
trials through the years. Former Illinois governor George Ryan decided
to halt the state's death penalty because of the allegations raised by
many of the alleged tactics used by Burge and his subordinates.
Burge avoided criminal charges until October 2008. A federal lawsuit
filed in 2003 by Madison Hobley, convicted of murder and sentenced to
death for a 1987 arson that killed 7 people including his wife and son,
was pardoned by Ryan. Hobley was one of 14 men convicted and sentenced
to death based on confessions made allegedly under torture. After the
lawsuit by Mobley was filed, Burge was arrested and charged for perjury
and obstruction of justice in connection with Hobley's suit.
The trial is expected to last up to two months. If convicted, Burge
could face 45 years in prison."

Teenage twins charged with their mother's murder.
CBS News
CONYERS, Ga. (CBS/WGCL/AP) Police have charged Tasmiyah and
Jasmiyah Whitehead, a pair of 16-year-old twin girls, with murder.
Conyers Police arrested the girls Friday following an investigation
that began in January, when the girls' mother was found dead.
The two are charged as adults with the murder of Jarmecca
Whitehead, who was found stabbed to death in her home on Jan. 13.
Conyers police chief Gene Wilson says authorities suspected the pair
early on.
According to CBS
affiliate WGCL, the two arrests were made after evidence found at
the crime scene was processed by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
This evidence directly linked Tasmiyah and Jasmiyah to the murder of
their mother, the Atlanta station reports.
The girls, who
were 15 at the time of the murder, told police that they came home and
found their mother dead, according to WGCL.
The teens flagged down sheriff's deputies for help after they said they
made the discovery.
Police said the mother was found
stabbed in the back.
Wilson says authorities know of no
motive for the crime.

Mexican man accused of giving away his children
BBC News 7/06/10
A Mexican man has been accused of giving his two children away to cancel
a 25,000 peso (£1,300; $1,900) debt, then pretending they had been
abducted.
Javier Covarrubias confessed to the alleged crimes after detectives
confronted him with evidence that his story was false, prosecutors say.
His account of how his children were snatched in the street led
to concerned protests in Tepito, a poor area of Mexico City.
The two children are still missing.
Mr Covarrubias, 20, was arrested in Hidalgo state after going
into hiding when police questioned his account of his children's
disappearance.
He initially claimed they were snatched in a violent street
attack in Tepito in Mexico City on 18 May.
Angry protests
But CCTV footage showed he was not in the area in the time, and
forensic examination found his wounds were self-inflicted, police said.
When confronted with the evidence, police say Mr Covarrubias
confessed to giving away his children, Isis and Darien, to a woman in
Mexico City to cancel his debts.
They say he admitted making up the kidnap story so his wife
would not find out the truth.
His account of the supposed kidnapping provoked angry
demonstrations in Tepito, where residents blocked roads and clashed with
police in a protest to demand better security
Police say he was arrested as part of the continuing
investigation to find the children.
