SON ABANDONS MUM
A British man who allegedly abandoned his own mother at Torrevieja hospital is to be hauled before a judge next month.
The 61 year old British pensioner was taken to the A&E department last week, suffering from dehydration and malnutrition after she had stopped eating.
A hospital source said she had been brought to Spain from the UK by her son but had started refusing food.
A Torrevieja hospital spokeswoman confirmed that after five days of treatment she was given the all clear and was taken by ambulance to her son´s house in Torrevieja last Friday.
However the son refused to take her in and sent her back to the hospital, according to the spokeswoman.
Because the pensioner was deemed to be in a healthy condition, hospital chiefs contacted the local police and sent her back to her son´s home with an escort. But she was turned away once again, with officers noting what had happened.
The local police then placed an official complaint with the courts against the British man over the abandonment of a family member. He was cited to appear on Monday morning but failed to attend the hearing. The judge has now issued a new court date for July.
The pensioner was finally repatriated on Tuesday following the intervention of the British consulate in Alicante.
The hospital source explained that the son had contacted the Consul and left a plane ticket with consulate staff for his mother to return to the UK. A taxi was sent to collect the pensioner from the hospital.
The hospital source stated that the son had not wanted any contact with his mother or the hospital.
A spokesman for the British Embassy in Madrid said: "We are aware of the case, and have been providing consular assistance to son and mother. We are liaising with hospital and arrangements have been made for mother´s return to the UK".
Torrevieja hospital´s spokeswoman said "Torrevieja hospital has presented an officla complaint to the court, joining with that of the local police, for abandoning a family member".
She explained they had started legal proceedings because the son had "refused to accept" his mother in their home, even when she had recovered and had been given the all clear on Friday.
She added that if the son did not attend the court date in July, then the judge would issue a search and capture arrest warrant.
...............
I now find myself wondering just how far the British Embassy will go to protect this woman´s son. It´s very strange, this is not about a child being abandoned but a 61 year old woman. I wonder if Clarence will be putting in an appearance!

Possibly not mara thon, there's no mileage for Clarence in chasing an Ambulance with a mere common and possibly confused pensioner in it. There can't be any money in her bank otherwise the son wouldn't have turned his back on her.
