For 36 years she longed for the day when she would see her missing daughter again.
Olive Hampson spent endless hours trying to find Pamela, contacting charities, taking part in TV and newspaper appeals and searching where she disappeared.
So Mrs Hampson was left heartbroken after her daughter was finally traced - but refused to meet her.
The 86-year-old widow was given the bombshell news two weeks ago that Pamela, who vanished mysteriously aged 25, had been found but did not want her whereabouts revealed.
Mrs Hampson, whose husband Richard died five years ago, said she was 'in pieces' and could not understand her daughter's reasons.
Pamela was working for a pet food company and teaching at Sunday school when she went missing from her rented home in Hove, East Sussex.

She had moved there with an older boyfriend she met at work. He had apparently left her some weeks before she vanished with just the clothes on her back.
Her parents last received a letter-from Pamela in July 1974 after she and her boyfriend had visited them for the weekend.
Around two months later, after hearing nothing from her, they visited and found she had gone missing.
Mrs Hampson, of Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, said: 'I'm just devastated. I feel lost and can't sleep.
'We've waited 36 years for this day, searching for her and thinking about her.
'My husband died not knowing whether his daughter was alive or dead, and now the police have said, "She doesn't want to see you".
'I can't understand it. I don't know what I've done. I just wish she would talk to me and tell me why she went, and I could put my arms around her.
'When she went, she was young and happy and had a loving family. There were no clues this would happen.'
Mrs Hampson added: 'I still keep hoping she'll think it over and get in touch. If I could only see her to tell her I love her. I don't care what's happened or what she might have done.'
Mrs Hampson and her husband had two sons, Richard, now 56, and Barry, 60, and three grandchildren, one in the Army preparing to go to Afghanistan.
Earlier this year the family gave DNA samples to a police 'cold case' team to help with a new search.
It is not clear if this helped officers, but a fortnight ago Richard was contacted by Leicestershire police, who said Pamela, now 61, had been found.
A spokesman for Sussex Police said: 'We made inquiries about Pamela after a contact from Leicestershire Constabulary. We were able to trace her and we are satisfied she is well.
'She has specifically said that no further information should be given to anyone about her whereabouts or her circumstances and we are bound by that requirement.'

Of course, Maddie is going to just slot right back in at Rothley Towers, conveniently filling that Spare Place at the dinner table.

Such a shame for the mom, What was so bad that even after all this time the daughter wants absolutely no contact with her whatsoever.
At least the mom knows her daughter is still alive but the worry of her missing is now gone to be replaced with the worry of why her daughter has to all intents and purpose disowned her.
It wouldn't take much for the daughter to call her mom and say i am fine, things happened that i don't wish to discuss and i no longer wish any contact with you or the family. I am happy in my life.
Because years down the line the daughter may well regret things that were done or left unsaid and once the mom dies they cannot be said or undone.
A simple 5 minute call would be all it takes and then she can carry on with the life she has chosen.
if the daughter knew she was being searched for why did she not call the police at the time and say i am fine but i do not want my family to know where i am or what i am doing or my new name ( if applicable) it would have saved a lot of heartache and a lot of money wasted on a search that was never needed.

TFG,
Exactly!
Even if MBM was abducted by paedophiles, as her parents claim she was, then if she was ever found she would not be put straight back into the family home and sitting in the place where her place has been set for her. The judical system and social services would be duty bound to act in the best interests of the child, not the parents who left her night after night. The child would need years and years of therapy possibly just to cope with living each day of her life!

That's very sad, but we are reading the story being told by the mother of this "missing" woman. It seems this daughter must have strong reasons to avoid contact with her mother, even after 36 years old.

That was my first thought, too - there's a side to this story that we're not hearing.

Agreed. She could even writie a letter to be passed on. There's something horrendously wrong if you can't find an ounce of compassion for your own mother.

as above
This is very sad but none of us knows what went on between mum and daughter all those years ago. Then again we only pass this way once and life's too short to hold grudges ,i hope some how the daughter will give this some more thought and maybe soften her feelings towards mum.

Re: Mother whose daughter vanished for 36 years is told: 'She doesn't want to meet you'
Well, its obvious to me that something did go on back then - What though? People are not all they seem, are they? Okay, so now she is a very old woman and her husband has died, but what actually happened to their daughter that was so bad? This woman is not likely to tell us, is she.
The other point is, and its just nothing to do with it really (I don't think), but what a coincidence that she lives so near to Kate and Gerry. In fact Kate worked as a locum GP in Melton Mowbray. And Leicestershire Police were successful in tracing this old woman's missing daughter.
Well there's hope yet, isn't there Kate. But, like this woman, Kate may not like the ending.

Re: Mother whose daughter vanished for 36 years is told: 'She doesn't want to meet you'
Yes, life's too short, and people shouldn't bear grudges, but daughters don't disappear from their mother's life and not want to be in touch all those years later on a whim. I believe that people who want to disassociate from their family and all that's connected with their life, if they feel so strongly about it, should be able to do that, as long as they let someone know they're doing that. Whatever the reasons, we all have the right to run our own lives, and nobody has a right to a relationship with someone because that's what they want or expect. As long as this mother knows whether her daughter is dead or alive, the daughter is entiitled to chose who she connects with. Yes, you might 'only have one mother' (or father), but that doesn't mean to say you owe something to another human being whose made your life difficult and/or painful.
