Oakleigh East mum charged with attempted murder of children

AN OAKLEIGH East (Melbourne) woman has been charged with attempted murder after her children were found with cuts to their wrists and necks last week.



Police charged Christine Steinberg with two counts of attempted murder at an out-of-sessions remand hearing at Upton House, Box Hill Hospital, this morning.

Glen Waverley detective Sen-Constable Scott Macdonald said Steinberg, 42, was at the hospital with self-inflicted wounds to her wrists, but would soon be transferred to Dame Phyllis Frost Centre in Deer Park.

Her seven-month-old son and three-year-old girl were found on April 29 at their grandmother’s Delmore Cres house with cuts to their wrists and necks.

Her four-year-old daughter was also found with undisclosed injuries, but these were not included in the charges.

Sen-Constable Macdonald said police had been unable to interview Mrs Steinberg on medical grounds but believed they had sufficient evidence to lay charges.
