An on-the-run Scottish paedophile has been arrested in the Republic.

Fraser Benjamin McLaughlin, of Hamilton in South Lanarkshire, was detained in Dublin after an eagle-eyed member of the public tipped off detectives.

The child sex offender was spotted in the city after someone recognised him from a picture on an online most-wanted list.

The 57-year-old's details had been posted on the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (Ceop) website last Friday.

McLaughlin was last seen boarding a ferry for Northern Ireland earlier this year and had been on the run for several months.

Jim Gamble, Ceop Centre chief executive, said: "Once again we prove that the public are willing and able to help locate convicted missing child sex offenders," he said.

"If McLaughlin thought he could hide then he is learning a lesson. My message to other convicted offenders who think they can also go missing is to look at this story and give themselves up as they too may find their details posted on our site."

McLaughlin, who was missing for several months, could face up to five years in jail for disappearing and failing to notify authorities of his whereabouts. He was required to keep police up-to-date with his movements under the Sexual Offenders Register notification requirements. He was also wanted for failing to answer bail over previous child abuse image offences.

McLaughlin is the 19th sex offender to be arrested after details were posted on the Ceop most wanted list since the site was launched in 2006. He is the second Scottish offender to be posted on the site. So far, details of 21 criminals have been published.

McLaughlin was arrested in Dublin city centre, a Garda spokesman confirmed. He later appeared briefly in court and was remanded in custody for one week.

I doubt the fund income can keep up with the outlay. Considering the McCann world tours, mortgage payments, Halligen's alleged payouts and the Metodo 3 office piss ups it already contributed to, DI Dave's remuneration will go into the same unaccountable black hole that has swallowed poor Madeleine's search fund.

I assume he is the kind of active pedo that actually does bad things to children and that before McCanns would have their "detective" using Fund money to go over there, they would ascertain whether he is one of the kind who would actually interfere with a little girl and was in PT at the time rather than say, a guy who had been found to be viewing photos of boys online or whatever else, who was in Scotland. They are all bad I know, but if TM had to investigate every pedo out there sadly there wouldn't be enough money in the treasury never mind the Fund. The only way their guy would go hot footing it over to investigate him IMO is if there was either some kind of connection like his whereabouts or if they really really need some news - like the Hewett thing - which was timed right. And this guy isn't dying so they can't go make up stories or letters he sent his son who then swiftly destroyed them because it was upsetting to think about (before contacting the Sun and spilling the beans). Too upsetting to show the cops privately but not too upsetting to put in the newspaper to be splashed all over.
