The value of education...these children know it!
Today I received the newsletter from a school in India, which my friend Tom helped to set up and helps to find sponsors for. First of all some info about the school.
http://msfoundationschool.org/index.html
We were founded as a charity from 15th August 2007 to provide education and
training for poor people in the slum area Yellammabanda at Kukatpally, Hyderabad AP.
We are a community of people dispossessed from our lands and homes - families of migrant labourers. Many families are living in terrible conditions and have come here to find work. The families would like to send their children to school but often instead they are sent out to work as labourers and servants.
Education will help to lift us from poverty. First we have started the school up to grade 7 and we have 180 students, and we would like to take more but do not have space for them or money to help them.
In May 2009 we moved because the house (left) was far too small and had only a banana-leaf roof, which was useless when the monsoon came. You can see this if you look at the Gallery. Our roof-top was having to take four classes of small children because the three tiny rooms of the house were being used by older people (e.g. unemployed coolies, and students who failed to get into a college because of lack of English)
We have now moved to a new house the same size as our present building, for rent for 5 years and we have built some more rooms on it and give it a rain-proof tin roof.
You can lift one of these families from poverty and provide a child with education. Please click on the button on the right to learn more.
The area
Where many of the families live.
The new building.
The old building where the school was originally set up.
The newsletter
These children had only ever seen a playground in pictures. This was the first time they had ever come across a real one.

As you probably know, jeanie, there is also fabulous wealth, as seen by this £630 million house that India's richest man has built for his family in Mumbai. It is 27 stories high with spectacular views over the city....and it's beggars and shanty towns and people living on the streets.
To me, it looks rather like something that's been thrown together from odd bits found on building sites, but it's incredibly luxurious inside.

My son went to India a few years ago. He flew into Mumbai as the start of his trip and although he'd heard about the level of poverty there, he was still shocked.
