who
should replace Ferguson as United manager?
16.45 Tongue in cheek: on a popular budget airline site the
security question read thus today:
In completely unrelated news, Michael O'Leary is a Manchester City fan.
16.35 More speculation on the new manager and new players. I
like this email from Russell Warwick-Yamamoto.
Left field idea: Mourinho to get the job with Moyes to
replace Mike Phelan. Left back idea: Leighton Baines a dead-cert for United if
Moyes goes to Old Trafford.
And Ian Fraser is on droll form, too:
Moyes will never match Sir Alex. I'll only give him 20
years.
16.30 So how long has Ferguson's retirement been on the
cards?
Perhaps longer than we think, says Thom Airs of the
Oxford Mail.
Twitter: Thom Airs - As @ukcavhead said last night, MUTV asked the Oxford Mail for stills of Fergie's first game (which was at OUFC) 2 months ago for a special.
16.25 A good line has dropped on the wires, written by
Martyn Ziegler of Press Association, and he writes that
David Moyes was in the running to be Fergie's assistant at United 15 years ago.
But he thought fellow Glaswegian Sir Alex had thought the then-Preston manager
was "too intense". Steve McClaren got the gig, of course. And last year Moyes
recalled:
"When I went to speak to him about becoming his
assistant years ago he thought me a little too intense. But I remember sitting
on the bench at Celtic and watching him at Aberdeen with his veins bulging out
of his neck!"
16.20 Oliver Gilberthorpe has also joined the dots: "Just
had a thought, if it is indeed Mr Moyes, surely Fellaini would join him to be
the new lynch pin?!"
16.15 David Moyes is still on his way to watch Chelsea's
game against Tottenham tonight, apparently. He might be asked a few questions at
Stamford Bridge, I reckon.
16.05 Some emails now. Tyler Coate is not
convinced that David Moyes is the best option to succeed Fergie.
Moyes might not be my first choice but then again no
candidate is perfect and they all have certain drawbacks: Moyes - no trophies or
European success; Mourinho - personality clash and no interest in youth
development, also likely to do one in a couple years; Klopp - no longevity on
his CV, Could he be flavour of the month; Giggs / Neville / Ole - no real record
at managerial level.
Moyes is a great man manager, does well with youth development, has a
decent record in the transfer (decent, not flawless) and is known to go the
course through ups and downs. Team and club are in a great position for him, if
/ when he gets hired.
And here is Nimish Varadkar. "I have a theory," he starts.
If Moyes has a bad or underwhelming season, then mark my
words: Fergie will kick him out and take over the job again. The other factor
contributing to this will be the fans. At every bad result / performance they
will sing Fergie's name-asking him to take over and with that undermine Moyes.
Good luck to Moyes with that poison chalice.
Meanwhile Dr Barrington, "a United Kingdom citizen living in
America", writes (about a "vocabulary book of wisdom", bizarrely):
I am not entirely positive that selecting David Moyes to
lead and manage the football squad is a wise choice but he is much better suited
for the position than Jose Mourinho. Sir Alex Ferguson’s role as director is a
critical. David can learn directly from Sir Alex vocabulary book of wisdom on
how to embrace the team’s philosophy and help David navigate the land mines and
pitfalls. Selecting David is a safe and smart move. Most people will see this
move as a negative but internally I believe it is a positive move for the
Manchester United Football Family. Besides, in some indirect way Sir Alex will
still have his football DNA on the club.
16.00 On this day in sport:
• 2006:
Sven-Goran Eriksson named 17-year-old Theo Walcott in his provisional England
World Cup squad despite the teenager not having played in the Premier League for
Arsenal.
• 2004: Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan broke the
world record for most wickets in Test history, going past Courtney Walsh's total
of 519 in the first Test against Zimbabwe. (Murali was overtaken by Shane Warne
before reclaiming the record following the Australian's international
retirement.)
• 2005: Wigan were promoted to the top flight
of English football for the first time after a 3-1 win at home to Reading
secured second place in the Championship.
• 2002: Sylvain
Wiltord scored the winner as Arsenal beat closest rivals Manchester United 1-0
to clinch the Premier League title at Old Trafford.
Oooh, a goodie, that last one!
15.55 News in from Chester Races, where Sir
Alex Ferguson's 7/1 Butterfly McQueen was leading the 3.50pm
... but pipped on the line and ended second. A bit like City overtaking United
last season, then?!
15.50 Some Telegraph insight into United's
fluctuating share prices on the New York Stock Exchange here.
Manchester United shares fell more than 4pc at the open in
New York after Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement wiping $123m (£80m)
off the group’s market value.
15.45 In other Ferguson news ... Sir Alex's son Darren will
stay at Peterborough. He had been sounded out for roles at Wolves and Millwall,
but after getting his side relegated from the Championship club owner Darragh
MacAnthony has just said on Twitter: "Just to confirm Posh fans, DF will not be
going to any other club & is already planning with me about our title push
next season."
15.35 Amogh Dhodapkar has just emailed in his interesting
thoughts. David Moyes is not the man for him ...
United directors have a choice: stability versus instant
success. One has to look at clubs like Chelsea and Madrid who have hired and
fired managers in the last 10 years and yet their trophy count is very similar
to Manchester United. The footballing landscape has completely changed since
Fergie took charge 27-odd years ago. My opinion is that stability would mean a
lot for a club in the Championship or lower leagues but hardly matters at the
crème-de-la-crème level. For a club of United’s stature I want them to go for
Mourinho who would almost guarantee instant success as soon as he walks through
the door. But I guess Man United will go for David Moyes he is of the similar
upbringing, background and footballing principles as Fergie.
What do you think? Let us know ...
15.30 Another one from the archives. Here is an interview
with Ferguson when he first arrived at Old Trafford back in 1986. "Once we have
a good relationship I'm sure we will do very well," he said at the time.
15.25 The amazing power of Twitter. Within the hour of the
news on Ferguson's retirement being confirmed by the Manchester United press
office at 9.18am this morning their tweet had been repeated 18,000 times and
there were 1.4m mentions of the story on Twitter.
15.20 More entertainment now, thanks to 101 Great Goals.
Here is their 'Top
12 goals of the Sir Alex Ferguson ear at Manchester United'.
You might have guessed that with Mark Odgen reporting that David Moyes due to
be appointed as the new Manchester United manager, and that with all the great
and the good of the game (and David Cameron) having already commented, we are
now playing a waiting game.
That's right: we are waiting for Fergie's 7/1 shot Butterfly McQueen
to run in the 3.50pm at Chester.
15.18 Going, going gone: some United fans have already gone
out and got their shirts amended suitable to commemorate Sir Alex's retirement
15.15 How about some fun debate now? Who was Sir
Alex Ferguson's worst signing as Manchester United manager?
Some ideas: David Bellion; Ralph Mile; Kleberson; Eric Djemba Djemba; Bebe;
Juan Sebastian Veron; and Massimo Taibi.
Who gets your vote?
Don't worry, we'll do his best signings shortly, so get your thinking hats on
for that, too.
15.12 A funny by Rob Davies in
reference to United's shares which have slumped after the New York Stock
Exchange opened 40 minutes ago.

Re: Footie Thread...................
Arsene Wenger surprise applicant for Millwall managerial vacancy !
'Sources' at Arsenal have confirmed they will not stand in Wengers way if he wishes to apply for the lucrative opportunity to manage high flying Millwall.
The Arsenal spokesperson confirmed that once again Wenger has failed miserably to add to Arsenals almost empty trophy cabinet so is free to talk to Millwall if he dares !
Wenger, however, will have to fight off the challenge from the fruit of the loins of the mad scotsman Alex Ferguson who is also thought to have applied for the post as Skybet currently have Daren at 12 to 1.
Millwall board of directors are now drawing up a shortlist of suitable applicants prepared to work for less than 3 shillings and 6 pence per week + luncheon vouchers.
Meanwhile in the Championship playoff semi finals first leg.....
Leicester 1-0 Watford
Palace 0-0 Brighton

Re: Footie Thread...................
On this day 28 years ago 56 football fans died at Bradford City football ground Valley Parade when an old wooden stand caught fire during the final game of the season with Bradford celebrating promotion that day.
Many of the fans burnt to death when they were engulfed in flames and trapped in and behind the stand with no escape.
It is thought that a cigarette set light to a build up of litter beneath the wooden seats, the fire quickly spread through the wooden roof.
There were many acts of heroism that day as fans helped extinguish those on fire. The disaster was a terrible accident and as far as i can remember the people of Bradford have never sought to blame anyone for it.
The construction of wooden stands was banned.
The final day of the football season is often one of joy and celebration for fans of all teams.I remember that day well as i was driving home from Millwall with a few mates listening to the football reports not quite believing what was unfolding in Bradford.
RIP

Where have the years gone? I remember this happening Lioned, such a terrible tragic accident. RIP.Lioned wrote:On this day 28 years ago 56 football fans died at Bradford City football ground Valley Parade when an old wooden stand caught fire during the final game of the season with Bradford celebrating promotion that day.
RIP

Re: Footie Thread...................
Championship playoff semi final second leg......
Watford 3-1 Leicester (Watford win 3-2 on aggregate)
Crazy end to the game as Leicester miss a penalty in the 97th minute to have won the game then Watford go up the other end and score the winner in the 99th minute !
Well done Watford booking a place in the final against either Brighton or Palace.Sorry have no sympathy for Leicester who tried to buy their way out of the division and Chris Wood who chose to go to Leicester rather than stay at Millwall.

Re: Footie Thread...................
A typical Leicester performance. They just don't deserve to go up. Well done Watford.
