KILLER CUCUMBER OUTBREAK SPREADS

The weirdo who called using 'recycled effluent' a dodgy practice has obviously never been further than the cellophane wrapped counter at his local supermarket. UK farmers use river water, lake water, mains water, silage, manure, and just about anything else on crops. It all contains nutrients that crops need, and you can't infect crops with it. What a bunch of ignoramuses, and spurred on to ever more ignorance by some of the most inaccurate reporting we have ever seen. Sky, some people actually believe what you publish, have you considered the consequences of that??

THERE ARE CASES IN DENMARK/SWEDEN/UK AS WELL AS A CASE IN SPAIN WHERE THE PERSON HAS BEEN TO GERMANY.

Since it is obvious that there has been contamination of food stuffs and the advice given is to wash all salad food - it has to have happened in transit. I can't help wondering if this has be caused accidentally - I have seen food being placed directly on the floor in some supermarkets and I have complained about it.

Hi Badboy, as if there are not enough problems in the worls, it"s like " a plague on all your Houses." See Germany were quick to blame Spain,
Russia and Belgium immediately banned all Cucumbers, Lettuce and Tomatoes...as if Spain hasn"t got enough problems.

The World Health Authority will start an immediate investigation to find the source but it is worrying particularly since so many Countries are affected.
It"s not airborne like the Flu but all the cases seem to have originated in Germany.

Just hearing on Sky, 365 affected by it now!

guardian,just read it 1,150 suspected cases,the three cases in uk all german tourists,at least one woman is from germany,i suspect it started in germany this outbreak.

Blimey......it looks as if it might be another epidemic like swine flu, only they have to isolate the Source first.

the other german woman i am refering to was in sweden(i think she died,germany appears to be epicentre of epidemic,also death in spain was of a german,methinks

THE HAGUE Netherlands - The source of the infection with EHEC bacteria is not with vegetables. Henk Bleacher Secretary (Agriculture) said Wednesday that he Germans have reported that their research indicates that the vegetables are clean. The Germans investigated vegetables from different European countries.

Minister of agriculture Bleeker also announced that 20 million euros is available from EU for a promotion campaign te recover the confidence of consumers in the horticultural sector. Also the sector itself has to contribute.

According to Bleeker, Dacian Ciolos Commissioner (Agriculture) in consultation with Barroso also promised next week to look for additional financial support from a European emergency fund for horticulture, a promise that the eurocommissioner earlier this week withheld.

Through another European settlement came this week 10 million euros for cucumber growers. The sector should settle an equivalent amount itself.

Bleeker won't talk about claims against Germany. A rebuild confidence of cosumers in the market is a shared priority. But he states that the communication in Germany have not gone well. Especially in Hamburg, where the infection with EHEC bacteria mainly arose, the authorities have something to explain.

Very informative article. Yes, Germany were quick to blame Spain and could have done a lot of damage to Spain"s economy, as if the Country hasn"t enough financial problems already.

It"s quite worrying that Health Officials cannot trace the source and why some people have died while so many survived thankfully.

It"s getting like Armageddon with all these Floods, Tornados, Financial crises affecting the Whole World, radiation leaks, earthquakes, tsunamis, now
this . I think we all aught to learn the skills of our forefathers we will probably need them soon.

Latest news. Russia has banned ALL IMPORTS OF FRESH FRUIT AND VEGETABLES FROM EUROPE........this is serious business , Russia is a big Importer.

I came back from France once with terrible food poisoning and that was down to the salad we had.Never visit Lille on a Thursday as their drainage system doesn't work so Thursdays they pump it all out and the place stinks.

Had a quick look this morning on the expat newspaper in their comments section Germanys love affair with bio food was mentioned . Places like Aldi are full of bio produce everything from fruit & veg to dairy meat etc another line of thought , but this began in and around Hamburg that seems to be the epicentre .

Saying on the news that there are now a couple of same type of e-coli cases in the UK... but they're saying those who are ill have recently been to Germany!


I've just ordered a whole bunch of salad ingredients and mixed lettuce etc, with my Waitrose delivery... and I'm not going to enjoy them now. Govt saying it's safe here, but still...

Funnily enough a couple of weeks ago I ordered an organic cucumber (I think it came from the middle east), I chucked it away and requested a refund because it tasted horribly bitter and nasty.

It is very worrying that so far they havn"t identified the source and Russia"s embargon ALL fesh fruit and salads is going to hurt Spain"s economy, already suffering , even more. I think they are the biggest exporters of fruit and salads. They are calling it e coli, what if it"s not? the last bout near where I
live was traced to a Butcher but this seems to be related to travel......quite different. It is also affecting people from other Countries , and at the moment
we havn"t been told what the symptoms are.

If the outbreak started in Hamburg .........Latest News, WHO is saying they cannot identify the e-coli strain , Spain is suffering from the Russia Ban and
is to ask the EC for aid. I"m just wondering it is not ecoli at all, but maybe GN modified food grown in Hamburg, it is not airborne or more people would be affected but salad produce exported from Hamburg could be the reason.
